Talking with U.S. troops in Afghanistan

Most of the new combat forces are expected to head south to places like Kandahar province, where troops there say they are needed. "We need the help down here. Even though we're handling it on our own," one said, "we need more forces down here." Troops say it will help them get to know the Afghans in their area, which could encourage the Afghans to cooperate. More forces would also help them with "IED Alley," or Highway 1, notorious for roadside bombs.

The supply challenges of deploying

From CNN Pentagon correspondent Chris Lawrence, who recently returned to the U.S. from Afghanistan: A few weeks ago, I spoke with several soldiers who said their supplies did not arrive ahead of them during this latest deployment – that they had to work a few months before all their supplies caught up to them. And that was a much smaller deployment than the 30,000 coming next year.
