Karzai says apologies don't make up for civilian deaths

Apologies are not sufficient when it comes to civilian casualties, Afghan President Hamid Karzai told the NATO commander Sunday, days after a NATO airstrike killed nine Afghan boys.

Karzai told Gen. David Petraeus, the commander of U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan, that incidents of civilian casualties during coalition military operations are the main reason for tensions in the U.S.-Afghan relationship and he demanded there be no more, according to a statement from Karzai's office

LIfe is not fair. We all do whatever meets our needs. Some of us truly care more about humanity and improving our world than others.
Sometimes I give a crap about what goes on in the world sometimes it just gets old and all the games people and politicians plays all end up being truly inane and insane. To me it is all really a game as its is. I truly feel sorry for the poor people in the Middle East and really any part of the world for that matter that get caught up in all these matters of the wealthy. It all boils down to money in the end every time.
Salerno, I just pick on you because you are easy.
I take care of myself quite nicely through a variety of business means by the way. I work simply because I like to contribute to humanity and do so in a capacity that helps others. I do not rely on government assistance in any capacity. I would say I am one of the lucky ones in the US that gets to pay for everyone else. I do care where my money goes and what it is used for. Do not like it going to corrupt dictators in other countries nor corrupt bankers in America.

Sherri – finally you addressed me in a normal way, after having qualified me as a "looser" or pathetic. May be you are calling me "easy" in an ironical or taunting way, but my situation is not different from yours. As I told in the past I am paying tax to the US government, but I cannot help the people I would like to help. This is why I am crying. I can only ask for you to listen those people, or listen what rep. senator Paul Ron and another are telling since the Iraq war started.
Do you know that 60% of our tax payer money is going to the military ?

Sherri, I don't live in the US, I live in Central America, I have an American son, so what, that doesn't mean I have the right to kill innocent people as Air Force Mom and her family do, you have to be a super stupid pilot (like Airforce Mom) to kill innocent women and children, I guess you are very proud of this.

Women can absolutely be evil. Look at Cleopatra. Men can be too.
Given just human desire for revenge then this would be a WHOLE lot more of a onesided affar in the Middle East.
The fact is that our military is trained NOT to act out of revenge.

sherri – I have no intention to give my addrewss to AirforceMom as she and his daughter are 2 disgusting women so I don't want any meeting. You have read somone telling I am unemployed, but it is his assumption like all the false assumptions spread by the american about their enemies about human shields, training camps, WMD.
It is not a new thing that women fight during a war. They did it in Europe in WWII. It is somethimg new that they fight like mercenaries as it is acting like street walkers and even worse if they kill children.
I don't know how have done to you the muslims, the iraqi or the Taliban as you talk about revenge.
They have the right to revenge. 2 airmen were killed in Germany by an Albanese, 4 americans killed by the Somali pirates.
If you act like the military not for revenge is even worst as you kill just for money. They kill for free. <so they are more free than you. What freedom are you talking about ?

Yes, they got a setback, but how much damage have they done ! I am still thinking at all those kids killed, I am thinking at their mothers. They will be the next to fight and die. AirForceMom should not be worry for her daughter, as she probably will get a medal for hitting those kids right in the head with laser guided aim. So many will thank her for "her service", but will laugh behind her back. My joy is that I can see the revenge that makes His anger sweet in His secret, as I saw 9/11 before it happened.
The blood of the victims has POWER. The blood of the children killed by Pharaon and Herodes strenghtened Moses and Jesus. Some of this blood is for the Mahdi, but even before something will happen.

Salerno, I understand perfectly, the problem with the US military, and the citizens, is that they think they own the world, and think they can do whatever they want, but they got a setback in Afghanistan and Irak, they never calculated how many people would strap a bomb to kill american soldiers. The problem with Americans is that they think they are superior, with that comes their arrogance and the no care for human life, like you said before, can you imagine a US female soldier torturing and making fun with a prisioner, this has never happened in a war with another country only Americans can do that and record it, its the most disgusting thing I have ever seen, I believe Air Force Mom does that to, maybe she likes to torture people for fun, if she defends these acts is because she agrees with them, Salerno, remember that these new kind of soldiers are not well prepared for war, they are just meat, they think they are good because of the propaganda on TV, they are ignorant and not educated people, like Air Force Mom and her family.

No in Afghanistan the US rescued the people from the genocide that were launching by the Taliban, by support of Pakistan, Iran and Russia and now also this is the Taliban that kill people deliberately. But in war sometimes happens that some civilians kill mistakenly, that should be considered on,

At least, we should have the knowledge of who is killing people by design, and who should we support, for their services and sacrificing their lives in our country as human being to save ourselves from barbarism and brutality of Taliban (.Alqeda), not as thinking politically and taking the sides.

It is not good to kill civilians, and so good point is that the USA and international forces are taking care of the civilians’ causalities, but the Afghan government is launching propaganda when civilians mistakenly kill by the international forces, but when the Taliban kill civilians intentionally the government is ignoring that, and it has been seen that most of time the government released those Taliban, who were arrested with explosive devices to do suicide bombing, but later on released by president Karzai with giving them some financial supports too, in this case again the released Taliban go to the tribal areas joining the Taliban back and again beginning fighting against the people of the country. So that if we do not have stable policy and measures against the terrorist, it would take us irreparable unwanted result, which the all confusions and misleading are because of weak leadership administration by Karzai and his some fascists ministers. We need honest, stable and knowledgeable leader for our country, not Karzai1

So.....the taliban and all the smelly rats use children as "shields" precisely so that they will be in the line of fire. Then when the civilians get killed (being used as biological shields) it's not the taliban's fault it is EVERYone else's fault.

    • salerno

The human shields are an american lie. Stay home and you do not kill anyone. Move war when you are attacked militarily.
Terrorism is not a military problem. The fault is up to those who pull the trigger.

      March 7, 2011 at 11:13 am | Report abuse |
      • AlexanderTheGreat

Terrorism is PRECISELY a military problem. We all know that if the taliban win in Afghanistan they will grow like a cancer and eventually take their bizarre hatred overseas and kill everyone in sight just because they can.

Now...DO the taliban have any social/political goals? Do they build schools? Do they put medical care out in the villages? Publish newspapers? Create art? Do they design things? Build things?

If we let them prevail (notice I did not say "win") what would the REAL consequences be for all the rest of us? Try not to sidestep the core issues I raise here. I bet you can't give a straight, honest answer.

        March 7, 2011 at 11:22 am | Report abuse |
      • salerno

Alex – Terrorism was NEVER a military problem in the history. In Italy and in Ireland it was addressed through internal security.
Last week 2 airmen were killed in Germany. For me it was not terrorism as they deserved to die as they are baby killers.
But what I am saying is that there are no borders. Training camps are not required. Training camps could be used for a military aggression against a neighbour country, but not against the US.
Many support the Taliban because they as Pashtun defended the country against the foreigner.
Taliban problem must be addressed by the local people like Bangash said very well.

You, very predictably, evaded my questions about what the taliban have to offer civilization if they prevail.

Art? Philosophy? Creativity? Medicine? Women being treated as real, human beings rather than just baby factories? Anything we might look forward to as good and beneficial? In truth, if they "win," all we can look forward to is to be murdered and brutalized.

Rather than just saying what you think is negative about your purported "enemy" tell me what is RIGHT about YOUR side. Can you do it?

It is just like when the fighters run into hospitals or schools knowing the military will look bad if they fire upon them.
For all you detractors that want to act like the US military did this on purpose well, we are not the ones that have poor uneducated, depressed people strap bombs onto themselves. Everyone tried to impose their rules to Pashtun people, but they have the right to live as they want.
What is really disgusting in this US-Nato military operation is the continouse lying about the civilian casualtis. They are part of a well defined evil strategy, like Bangash pointed out.

I'm a little tired of Karzai jockeying for favor in his country by lambasting our soldiers for honest mistakes. He KNOWS the extent to which American soldiers go to avoid killing civilians – at great risk to their own lives. It would be a hell of a lot easier to drop Bunker Busters and MOAB bombs and go back to base for a tall one. Instead, our soldiers risk death to save even a single life. In my view, the General should not have even had to apologize. We did our best and mistakes happen in a war zone. Suck it up Karzai and do everything possible to aid American soldiers in rooting out Islamic terror in your country. We want out men and women home already. We are tired of cleaning up your messes.

I want an apology for my daughter having to fire on a group of teenage extremists who were forced by the Taliban to attack her team. She has to live with killing these kids as they opened fire and were obviously scared and crying... but, they were shooting at her! We need some leadership with the courage to get the job done or we need to get out. We are killing innocent children on both sides! I wonder what a Patton would say about this idiotic war? AND, the insane strategy, or lack thereof, for winning this war. I have to type the search word "Afghanistan" to even retrieve news that we are fighting a war! You can bet Lindsey Lohan has America's attention... but not a war we are fighting??? These generals need to act like leaders and fight to win. If not, get our innocent children who risk their lives daily, out of this insane war. Karzai is corrupt and a joke. I find it sickening that Gates was choked up during his speech at Bagram AFB professing to think about our soldiers day and night. He doesn't know what choked up is until he takes a call from a soldier, who is his child, and hears the horror of the frontline war. We are at war and people are being killed. If we do not wish for people to die, we should not be fighting a war. Our soldiers deserve an apology for the lack of leadership and the actions of the Bush administration who started this war and did not finish it. AND, for every reply I receive debating this post, allow me to tell you that our past and future American soldiers have allowed you the right to tell me to go to hell. You are thanking them with your freedom of speech.

Thank you and your daughter for her harrowing service. Tell her we are behind her and that I, for one, hope that when she comes home she will not be so seared emotionally that recovery from her time of service will not be impossible.

When the Taliban kill and as all of us know always Taliban kill innocent people but the government is not blaming Taliban for what they do in the country, because most of Taliban are Pashtuns and the government's key positions also occupied by Pashtuns and they recruite their own people ( Pashtuns) and now The government is Talibanizing, and it is good that the northern allaince are against the Taliban and they resist against the Taliban and Karzai. but through many excuses Karzai is supporting Taliban by the support of Pakistan and Turkey, though the Afghanistan non-Pashtuns which their are in majority do not support Karzai's ideas and his Pakistani and Taliban brothers.

In fact, they are Taliban but when international forces arrest and kill them then they say oh! They were civilians. But when Taliban kill civilians neither no one is condemning behalf of the government and nor taking serious measures to destroy the Taliban’s nets in side the country.

Very strange incident. What were these children doing where the RPG came from? How come they are so near with the Taliban who was sending rocket launches to Troops?

DINDY now it is beyond any doubt that you and baby killers will face the wrath of GOD very soon as Karzai, your own ally is now exposing your real faces and will soon talk to you in Taliban language. This is now clear to every Afghan that during last one decade of occupation US intentions had never been to fight Alqaida or hunt for Osama but kill Afghans under pretext of friendly fire or in the name of Taliban. Karzai being a son of Afghan soil cannot ignore this brutal actions of these occupied forces against innocent Afghans therefore has begun talking against own Masters. This is not only Karzai speaking against those having imposed him on Afghan nation but during last two centuries almost all such imposed rulers revolted when have seen them against the interest of Afghans and their mother land. So Dindy there is nothing you calling it strange but an ultimate ground reality that Americans are killing Afghans in their homes, towns and streets for the sins they have never committed. This defiance on the part of Karzai is probably a beginning of an end to this evil GREAT GAME on Afghan soil, a graveyard for all world empires.

Bangash – I am surprised by this strong position by Karzai. It is not the first time, but it is stronger than in the past..
        This is positive.

Ha! He has already accepted our apology. He knows how cowardly the Taliban fighters are when they hide within civilian areas. It's all propaganda for the Taliban.

Oh, come on! Loose the ridiculous and annoying parentheses and just say what you mean. The silly-ass "code" you think you need is off-putting and pointless. When I see the () I just skip your comments. Grow up and start communicating like an adult, already.

Now, watch him (code) speak again! I know he won't pay attention.
