Official: Veteran diplomat to be U.S. envoy to Afghanistan, Pakistan

Former ambassador Marc Grossman will be named this week to replace the late Richard Holbrooke as the U.S. special envoy to Afghanistan and Pakistan, a senior Obama administration official said.

The official was not authorized to speak on the record about who would assume the position as the Obama administration's point man in the volatile region.

Grossman is currently vice chairman of the Cohen Group, a Washington-based consulting group headed by former U.S. defense secretary and senator William Cohen.

How we can bring peace and instabilities in those countries, which have leaded, by the Taliban and Alqaeda, for example in Afghanistan we need to put more pressure on barbarians and racists Taliban (Karzai), you know that the Karzai is a Taliban but still he is functioning as president of Afghanistan why ? because he has the support of Pakistan and indirectly UK to fail the occupation of the USA which brining of peace and stabilities. In Afghanistan majority of the People except some Pashtuns do not want to talk and do reconciliation with the Taliban, because The Taliban and Alqaeda are not the people and human being to talk with them, they are wild and devils, and they have to go to the hell. But due to Karzai is Taliban so he misleads and misuses the power and resources of the USA (Obama) in Afghanistan and Pakistan. It would be very important and crucial for the USA instead of changing the envoy in both country to think about their leaderships, to support such leadership, whom must be against the Taliban’s ideas which is non-Pashtun leader. Because all Pashtuns think, as the Taliban do! Every day Taliban kill many innocent people in the country, but still Karzia wants them on power why? Because they are Pashtuns and sometimes have been seen that the Karzai supports Taliban by his speech and indirectly by Iran and Pakistan to hold power in his hand and his tribes (ethnic group), which is unbearable for all.

If we want to bring changes for the good of the humanity to some countries we must change the thinking of the people, we must put and push in their mind to think generally for the good of all the human being, not for the good and the foolishness of the Pashtuns.

I hope from all humanity to think to benefit all humanity not just your race, region, nationality and ethnic groups.

May be he will not be elected, but he was right. Bush senior pursued a new world order but got a new world DISORDER.
USA is no longer able to force his will to the countries and to be a credible leadership, neither militarily, neither economically.
There are big economic problems: B. Bernanke is still printing 3.3 billion $ daily to finance US debt, there is the energy probòem and the food scarcity and security issue. China and Russia are no longer using dollar in their bilateral trade and this is meaning that the US currency is gradually loosing his reserve status, so it will be no lòonger possible to fund the wars and deficit printing dollars.

And what we do for the world is why GOD helps us through all our hard times whereas your devil is hiding in a cave most of his life, but he will be chained in hell for one thousand years when you and all of his followers will meet their doom!

DAN Salerno has rightly called you a mindless man or you might be the enemy of USA therefore you like to see USA humiliated in this region. If you know President Obama had won his election by condemning Bush for his policies in Afghanistan and American nation had rejected Bush for the same reason. So we have no doubt that Americans as a nation hate this inhuman policy but enemies of American nation like you have imposed this death merchandise on them. Luckily John Perkins and Ron Paul are there and we hope that you all the puppets of MIC, corporatocracy and Pentagon will soon face the consequences for your barbarism in this region and then American nation will make an example for the future generations.

Obama was against the war in Iraq as he pulled out combat forces from there, but as for Afghanistan he knows very well what would happen if we left prematurely as the Taliban and it's terrorist allies would once again have a staging point where they could train and plot attacks against the western world and also oppress the afghan people who do not believe in the Taliban's 6th century rule that is against their rights as human beings!

Obama promised to close Guantanamo and failed to fulfill even this promise, did not complete the exit from Iraq and escalated the war in Afghanistan without capturing Bin Laden and other leaders as planned. A total failure. Additionally the Taliban did not attack any western country.

In reply to many- Christianity is responsible for more death and destruction than any other religion, it's a fact of history. I'm not defending Islam, it is responsible for much spilt blood also.

We have had devistating impacts on Iraq and Afghanistan. However sometimes something is so damaged it can't be repaired, it must be tore down and rebuilt. Iraq and Afghanistan were a mess before the US invasion so we can't judge the decision to invade until we know the final outcome. Again I'm not defending America's decision to invade I'm just stating the fact that we don't know the final outcome yet, it's not over till the fat lady sings. She is not yet singing.

I personally believe we should end our campaigns in the middle east. This is why. How do you destroy the most powerful force(The US military) on Earth? Not with conventional warfare, it is impossible, the terrorist organizations know this as well. I believe they have put us in a position to destroy ourselves. The source of Americas power is in its pocketbook and it is in danger. Our deficit is ridiculous and will continue to grow if we don't stop chasing ghost. The answer to the above question is, you don't, you get it to destroy itself. I posted something similar on the Cafferty File and it was read on air, so a man of credible intelligence agrees with my opinion. Pulling out of the middle east will not put us in more danger here at home. We can use the money and military assets to beef up homeland security and possibly innovate new technologies to help prevent another attack. Right now America is losing this war just by participating in it, it's what they want. I still defend Americas right to go after those reponsible for 9/11, I just think we should realize this is a war we can't win, they know it and thats exactly why they started it.

Kevin – reasonable comment. All the 3 monotheistic religions had similar history. They started as a liberation even from a phisical point of view, but ended oppressing the people. The jewish had to escape from Egypt and enslavery, but later killed many prophets and their people, including S. John Baptist and Jesus. The Christians were persecuted initially, but then turned themselves in persecutor as killed millions of people in France and South America. Finally, Muslims were persecuted by the pagans and the Meccans initially, and later oppressed and killed many people.
You are right that these wars were totally counterproductive even for USA.

Never said Islam was fighting other religions except 360 cult, but you just acknowledged what I've been saying all along, that Islam is not a religion of peace, but there has been infighting ever since it's inception. And NATO has brought democracy there were now they can come to the table and have some dialog between each tribe. Most of the afghans have taken advantage of the stability that democracy has brought them.

I'm sure that the United States of America would sit down and talk with the Taliban if they would put down their arms and join the democratic process which has brought progress within Afghanistan. As for the terrorists they also must give up their quest to kill those who do not have the same beliefs as they do before we try to talk with them! It takes two to tango!

DAN your mindless approach make your person more ugly. You cannot find a single religion advocating for deaths and destruction in this world and all have based their religious philosophizes on messages for peace and human welfare. Islam has comparatively more universal approach for a universal peace. So there is no question of Islam Christianity or other religions as I can Prove that Prevailing US invasion/occupation of Afghanistan is against basic Christian teachings. DAN this bombing and killing of poor nations is your business and see the contribution of your weapons industry in your national budget. Also see US role in wars and state terrorism all over the world. If you say this all is according to Christian faith and teaching then sorry to say that you are insulting Great Jesus and Christianity.

Salerno - As I'm sure a well-educated Italian as yourself knows, when jihad is declared it is a minimum of 100 years war. Jihad has been declared against the US so if we leave Afghanistan, don't you imagine that the war would land itself on US soil more so than it already is.

      February 15, 2011 at 6:18 pm | Report abuse |
      • salerno

The Wife – Who declared jihad ? and why against US and not against Switzerland ? US policy is partially responsible for the situation as they are supporting military in countries like S. Arabia or Egypt. Even Saddam was supported initially against Iran. Iran Shah was supported before Kohmeini. If you will be able to give the money to the people living with 2$ a day instead of the military or their boss like Mubarak, and Pakistan leaders, you will save money and get better results. US problem is the military complex and the war industry. They have interest to create small areas of conflicts to sell weapons and aircrafts to countries like S. Arabia, Egypt, Syria.
In Italy terrorism was defeated hitting the responsible individually, without civilian casualties. So 100 years war is an exageration. I hope differently. AlQaeda was formed by few pople, but every innocent killed by US bombing is causing more recruitment, so you are working to make the war longer.

How can their be peace in Afghanistan when you have a group called the truth of 360 degrees, a man made cult that kills innocent people who have different beliefs than this Pakistani based cult? They say that there can be no peace among humanity until Islam, which they call peace but has been fighting ever since it's inception, is fully in control and they will do all they can to interrupt peace offerings even with suicide bombings of innocent people just trying to work to put a roof over their family and feed them. Just because they believe in freedom and democracy which allows them to choose who will govern them and not have to be ruled by some fanatical Islamic people whose work belongs in the mosques and not in the government!
