Petraeus: Quran-burning could endanger troops

The U.S. commander in Afghanistan on Monday criticized a Florida church's plan to burn copies of the Quran on September 11, warning the demonstration "could cause significant problems" for American troops overseas.

"It could endanger troops and it could endanger the overall effort in Afghanistan," Gen. David Petraeus said  in a statement issued Monday.

The Dove World Outreach Center in Gainesville, Florida, plans to mark the anniversary of al Qaeda's September 11, 2001, attacks on New York and Washington by burning copies of the Muslim holy book. The church insists the event is "neither an act of love nor of hate," but a warning against what it calls the threats posed by Islam.

The event has drawn criticism from Muslims in the United States and overseas, with thousands of Indonesians gathering outside the U.S. Embassy in Jakarta, Indonesia, on Sunday to protest the planned Quran burning.

More: Pastor weighing plans to burn Qurans amid U.S. warnings

With about 120,000 U.S. and NATO-led troops still battling al Qaeda and its allies in the Islamic fundamentalist Taliban movement, Petraeus warned that burning Qurans "is precisely the kind of action the Taliban uses and could cause significant problems - not just here, but everywhere in the world we are engaged with the Islamic community."

And one of his deputies, Lt. Gen. William Caldwell, told CNN's "The Situation Room" that event "has already stirred up a lot of discussion and concern" among Afghans.

"We very much feel that this can jeopardize the safety of our men and women that are serving over here in the country," said Caldwell, the head of NATO efforts to train Afghan security forces.

This inhuman and anti humanity action will prove Bush right when he compared war on terror with crusade and then among Muslims, there will be no doubt, that crusade wars are now at their door steps. This will make every Muslim fight for survival and American every where in the world will be targeted. This will prove the greatest human tragedy of this new millennium when world over both sects will be at unending wars. No doubt freedom of expression is birth right of every one but their should be some sense in one's action and one should see the cost which whole humanity will pay for the blunder of one or few persons. If Muslims are blamed for terrorism or considered the main cause behind the wars in the world then this should also be seen that which Muslim country has attacked other Muslim or non Muslim country in today's world. See the example of Palestine, Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan, the main burning points in today's world. Has any one of these Muslim states invaded America or any other state or they have been attacked and killed in their homes and towns in US war for world empire. No doubt this Pastor in Florida can burn Quran but we Muslim believe that this is the Book of God and God has taken responsibility for protection. So this Pastor is challenging God therefore God will make him and his supporters suffer for their this evil action.

Patraeus really believes that it is necessary to repress American core values, in this case freedom of speech, otherwise US troops will face danger then he should resign...our troops face murder at the hands of islamic fighters that will find them anywhere...they face an enemy whose goal is to wipe out those that dont believe in islam....

Petraeus says: Burning the Koran could endanger our troops? Well, Petraes, the fact is that we endangered the lives of our troops by sending them to Afghanistan in the first place. And wasn't July the deadliest month for our troops yet on record? That was well before this controversy. But let me ask the media the following question: Why are you endangering the lives of our troops by blowing up this story out of all proportions? Why did the media endanger the lives of our troops by showing pictures from Abu Graib? Also, where would you like to put the limit on my freedom of expression? Would you like to ban me from doing anything that could upset the Muslim community, for example depicting the profet Muhammed in cartoons? This is the debate we should have. And are you (the media) willing to expose any small group of 50 people in the Muslim world with a radical agenda who are using the Koran to spread hatred against Christians and Jews? I think that would be fair, don't you? I am sure that some people would have opposed burning Mein Kampf during WWII because it would have offend the Nazis and their belief. If somebody burned the Bible, as a true Christian I would forgive that person for not knowing better, because that is what the Bible teaches us. Please show me a passage in the Koran with a similar message, and let us all agree that we should be tolerant with each other, even if we happen to insult each other's faith! Pick out the Golden Rule from the Koran, and let us all live by it, instead of strapping bombs around our waists and spreading hatred towards each other!

Christian's burned the priceless library at Alexandria, the priceless Mayan books, temples and religious icons in India, Haiti, North and South America across the Polynesian Islands and thru-out the Caribbean Islands. When it comes to banning and burning of books, Christianity makes Adolph Hitler's thug's look like choir-boys.

Muslims have destroyed plenty of religious works and icon's themselves but they have a very long way to surpass Christianity and it's depravity of banning and burning books, temples, women, children even including a co-existing Pope in Constantinople along with 1 Million Christian's in that large city as the 'other' Christian leader's (Pope) army burned that huge city to the ground.

India had no (ZERO) 'Christian' lands to take back, India's Hindu's even pointed out their ALL in ONE God was the same as Christian's ALL in One God but the Christian's disagreed and burned down their temples, books, statues and religious icons. North and South America had no Christian lands to take back but Christian priests and their missionary's enslaved the indigenous people and seized their lands anyway. Polynesian Islanders were told by the Christian Missionary's the lie that the Christian God was waiting on their ship and if they could burn the Polynesian temples and shrines, he would come ashore. After the burnings, the Christian missionary's marched a old worn wooden cross before those natives who were utterly disgusted by the lie and falsehood. That anger and hatred exists to this day.

The utterly depraved Pope at the time of the burning of the Egyptian Library at Alexandria promoted the corrupt Christian priest whose rabid mob violently murdered the great female Philosopher and Curator of the Library in a utterly depraved skinning and then burning the greatest collection of humanity's history to the ground, to a Cardinal and then a SAINT upon his death.

The Pope REWARDED the Christian Priest whose mob burned that ancient library to the ground, it is entirely likely the Pope ordered that same Priest to murder the female curator who at that time was acclaimed to be the greatest Philosopher on Earth.

Part of freedom of speech is to be reasonable, so you can't scream fire among a crowd because that can endanger others. into a frantic run to escape Well attempting to burn the Quran is like screaming fire, it will drive every Muslim into fight or flight response because of its magnitude.

Let God take care of it and make lord"s decision about each of us. we should not make decisions with our human knowledge as it is limited. Only God is Mighty and complete in every way. So ask from Holy the spirit Before doing anything.Holy spirit can reveal everything and people can depend on it. Holy spirit will guide us into all truth and correct action. We all had lost connection with GOD ONCE due to sin. Now we are being reconciled with God through Jesus. So no one should do anything to hurt others. Let God be the Judge. Do what Jesus said. Pray.. !! so all will come to salvation. Then there is no more sin. No hate.

First, I really don't think that those the follow "true" islam as muhammad outlined with forced conversions, taxing, enslavement, and fighting/killing of us infidels will hate us any more because they already HATE us. Second, the same people that are outraged if the koran is burned turn a blind eye to when the American flag is lit on fire by calling it, "a freedom of exppression and a person's 1st amendment right!".

I have mixed feelings on this...maybe they should burn all of the parts of the koran that deal with fighting, death, punishment, enslavement, and hell to us infidels and leave the one or two pages that deal with "peace" (HA!) alone.

That is so silly to say!.. No Holy Books should ever be burned. The Bible has just ah much fighting, death, punishment, enslavement, and hell in it. So should thoes pages be burned too??

I am all for the First Amendment but this pastor is a radical just like the radical muslims whose evil actions on 9/11 he wants to protest. I am amazed that anyone in their right minds would think that causing the death of more American service men and women overseas is the appropriate way to remember the dead from 9/11. This man is dangerous. This is not way the way of Jesus!

He should not be a Pastor, but if he wants he should blacken out all verses that refer to the hatred of the infidel.

Is this pastor serious? Isnt the basis of the christian religion acceptance and forgiveness? We were not attacked by the entire muslim religion. We were attacked by redical terrorists that happened to be muslim. Burning the quran is not going to solve anything, its just a way to release anger. This is not the right thing to do. We are slapping our own muslim citizens in the face, as well as any muslims that are on our side in this war. This pastor and anyone who follows this burning of qurans are not acting as true patriots. Instead of putting all this energy into something destructive we should put it into something positive. I am a christian, and I am a patriot, and this IS making me sick to my stomache. All this will do is anger muslims and possibly even turn muslims that are with us, against us. Stop being immature, and stop stooping to their level.

This guy should be put in jail for burning any books, who the heck is he just because he is saying he is a man of god what gives him the right to incite a racial incident for our nation.

If our government allows this nut case to brun any books at his chruch and stand up and claim he is a man of god they are supporting crazy people like this and this is why we are always going to have issues in America.

We can do as our enemy does or the battle is lost. We need to keep the moral high ground, if we don't we are just as bad as them.

That is bull. The majority of Americans are not concerned with others religious choices. They are concerned about being able to pay their bills.. to put food on the table for their children.. and to maybe be able to have a good life with what is left after that. How dare you assume that you have any right to speak for the majority of this country.

Is that why they are Islamophobic and support these obscene wars halfway around the world, gigi? At least the RevTerry Jones has the guts to stand up for what he believes and I respect that.

Whose nation is that, larry? It's certainly not yours. No American would ever advocate arresting a man for burning a qur'an, a bible, a torah, or any other book.

Shut your face Larry, this is America and you can burn whatever. Look at all the people who burn the American Flag and its legal. Whats the difference between the American Flag and some Quran???? They both stand for something that millions of people believe in, this is not Russia or China people can express their feelings symbolically the way they want!!!

I think we need to conduct a bible burning somewhere here in the US to show that we won't let our judgment be clouded by any book of fables, whether we worship the main character or not...

Not just you Larry, but when will you all wake up, they burn our flag, they attack and kill Cristians throughout the world, and they won't stop, nothing matters to them, they will still hate us no matter what! I know! Having been around muslems in Bosnia, Afghanistan, and Iraq, not to mention the over 240 service members killed in Lebanon while all this was trying to save them....Oh and there was no Quran burning then,if all of you think otherwise then go on a trip over to an islamic country and preach your peace and freindship to them. I gurantee you won't be back. We are in danger no matter what. Oh and I'm a infidel too.

Jesus said he is the way and he preached to the sinners and healed those who were called sinners. Also ate and broke bread with the sinners and never once did he turn a sinner away or bring punishment upon them!!!

Wow! What a load of crap! What's next? Stone a Muslim day? Throw a Christian to the lions week? Burn a witch week? Book burnings went out in the 30's when the Nazi regime made it popular! Oh I forgot, Satin also lives in music, so burn a record. Guess the burning somehow makes up for the end of times not occuring upon the new millemnium being brought in!

please don't do this! christians who are true Christ followers practice love, not promote hate! this is just one more nail in the coffin of those of us who try to show Christ's love to the world. we are now being stereotyped as fanatical b/c of groups like yours!!! ...i am ashamed of some of those who profess to be Christians who act like this! think of our soldiers – this is truly a selfish gesture and a stupid one at that!

Our law enforcement should not carry out punishment, that is left up to the appointed judges who go through many years of training and they do not hand out inhumane punishments for those whose sin is even the smallest of offenses like stealing food for a starving family. No we do not dismember their body parts but as a matter of fact try to help the family with better resources! We in America try to rehabilitate the sinner so that he may become a better person in society, we do not just kill or dismember their body parts or throw them out of society, no, we try to make them become better people!
