Iraqi mission accomplished. Afghanistan mission almost achieved. What the heck was the mission to begin with? Lets start a new mission and Brits(Americas very own lapdogs) will fallow
lf the Iraq war was about oil, then we would have invaded Mexico or Alaska. Closer and would have cost less!
Does anyone truly believe that Sadam Husseinwould have said no to Al Queda if they wanted some of the sarin gas he used to kill almost 100,000 Kurds in his own country. Oh, I forgot, there were no WMD in Iraq – up to three days before we crossed the border from Qatar. Let's leave Afghanistan so the Taliban can take control again and allow all those terrorist training camps to start up again so the Western Infidels can feel their wrath.
Our grandfathers from WWII from all countries that came together to crush the Nazi threat are either rolling over in their graves or wiping a tear from their eyes.
You've all missed the most significance point of this video clip – the most dangerous thing in the world is still an officer with a map!
The myth regarding the military might of the USA is wearing pretty thin by now. Think back to Vietnam and now think about Afghanistan. The US military are not the best trained and certainly not the sharpest knives in the drawer. With learedrs like Rumsfeld and Bush it is small wonder.
England is our staunchest ally and we have far more in common than we have apart. Brit bashing isn't cool...they're really our only true friend left. Would you bash the only friend you had who watched your back in a fight?
The amount of times I hear Americans say " if it wasn't for us what language would you be speaking" really come on, and what language do you think you'd be speaking if it wasn't for England? not English thats for sure. oh and The battle of Britain had already been won by the time you joined WW2 WITHOUT your help.
As for the equipment you 'gave' us no you didn't, you sold it us at very high interest rates that pretty much bankrupt the country (which we only managed paid off in 2001), thats not aid thats profitering during out countries darkest hour, thanks
I really enjoy how everyone ignores Larry, it it hilarious
Thank you for your comment Thorsshammer. This forum discussion appears to have stooped to the level of Brits and Americans taking pot shots at each other. I have long admired Americans and it was not surprising that I would eventually end up living in the U.S., 40 years to be exact. I am of the opinion that those Brits who do not like the U.S. or Americans in general, have never been here, know nothing about the culture, nor have they never seen any of the amazing scenery America has to offer. We are supposed to be allies and what a sad statement that this is not entirely true.
Yanks who bash Britain and whine that they-oughta-thank-us are ignorant. Sure the US was essential to beat Hitler but Britain held out alone long enough for pacifist America to get its act together and build a military. Read a few books. Have any they-oughta-thank-us people thought about how many American lives it would have taken to retake Europe in Britain had quit? Even if the US had the guts to shed that much American blood, they'd have found Russians waiting for them on the Rhine or maybe in Paris by the time we got there. About 400 thousand British soldiers died. That's about 400 thousand American casualties they saved us. Beating Hitler was a hell of a fine team effort. If you listen to any of the British or American vets still alive, there's no whining crap from them about who owes whom more. On a team, you don't thank your team mates like they did you a a favor, you embrace them and celebrate the victory. It probably was Britain's finest hour, and a damn good one for the US as well. And now there's a new common enemy who's declared war on Western civilization and wants to kill every American and Brit man woman and child they can get to. Let's aim our sniping at those murderous terrorist Al-Q swine and their buddies.
To the person who said that the United States "beat Britain again" in the war of 1812.
Strictly speaking, that is not true. The US did win the battle of New Orleans (after the war had officially ended), but failed in its strategic goal of conquering Upper Canada. The province of Ontario still sticks "like a dagger into the heart of the United States" as Governor Simcoe eloquently if unirenically put it some years later. (Note to Americans: if you don't know where Ontario is, look at a map. See the dagger? That's us. But don't worry. We're all friends now. Just be grateful you have us on your side.)
Oh . . . and remember . . . the British (with a bit of help from the people who would later be Canadians) burned Washington. Just as well you do have us on your side. So brush up your history (and your hockey).
Love from Canada
Why would we want Canada??? From the Pacific to the Atlantic is big enough for us!!!
Hey everybody....CHILL OUT! The British are our best friends. They always have been. We don't have too many friends as it is. We can't afford to lose them. I've been to England and the people there are good. Our ideologies are similar and we can count on them. We need to unite against terrorists. They're real and they're nasty and they need to be eliminated.
I'm American...and married to a Brit... and all I can say is... Do Americans perpetually play Stupid to gain sympathy, or are we REALLY STUPID. THIS video is ABOUT A TRAINING FACILITY LOCATED in ENGLAND to train NEW TROOPS who are as young as 18 before they are deployed to Afghanistan.... Reading through your comments, most of you should be ashamed at your level of intelligence and ignorance. These british soldiers are training to fight for not only THEIR freedom from these horrific terrorists, but also ours. Do not forget the bombings in ENGLAND carried out by them. AMERICA is not the only country they've hit. Educate yourselves before you continue to post idiotic comments on something that protects us.
Egyptian police find weapons bound for Gaza
Boston Globe Sat, 28 Aug 2010 06:58 AM PDT
An Egyptian security official says police in the Sinai desert have discovered two large caches of weapons that were to be smuggled to Gaza. Gaza – Sinai Peninsula – Egypt – Police – Israel
for those of you who like to down grade america. you have the option to leave anytime to a country thats as strong as the u. s and live there. no, u want to stay here because you feel safer than anywhere else. you are nothing but pacifist and affraid to move your a.. out of the country. no country is perfct, but i would rather be here than anywhere else even if i dont like alot of things that go on.strengh is what makes a country safer than any other = technology above the rest. you liberals make us sick , u are nothing but cowards.
I would move to England in a minute to get out of the U.S. (I was born here) and have seen it decline and, thanks to Obama, we are rapidly losing our friends. If anyone wants to pay my way I'll be happy to move to England where people know how to speak properly and actually employee etiquette..
My its nice to see that the children are all playing nicely together . . .
The US helped defeat the Germans ... is that why were speaking Spanish now?
I said it before and I am gonna say it again. Someone please tell me what are we doing differently from the Soviet Union in the 80s. Fighting and endless guerrilla war in that God forsaken country. Training a local army that flees at the first instance of armed clash.
Proping up a corrupt, inefficient local government that only has control of Kabul. Controlling the major cities and allowing the enemy to control the country side and the border with Pakistan. Bombing civilian targets, allowing the growth of the opium trade. Posting soldiers in indefensible, remote army outposts so they can get ambushed over and over again.
Doing armed patrols across the plateaus and small villages only to have the enemy vanish before our noses when we are there, but return as soon as we leave and intimidate the population in to supporting them. Allowing Pakistan to be a depot for enemy man power, money and arms. The only thing we have not done as the Soviets is the usage of heavy armor and tanks, that is pretty much it.
Other than that we are doing exactly everything else they tried in the 80s and having the same results. We even have the same number of soldiers there they had in the 80s, if not more. Thank goodness, our soldiers have not become opium addicts as most Soviet troops did. After Afghanistan, Russia became one of the biggest heroine consumers in the world thanks to the introduction of opium to its young men during the war.
I am sure our soldiers must be looking around the wreckage of their armies left overs, 20 years from now, someone else will be looking at ours. I have read about the Soviet experience in Afghanistan from its soldiers first hand and we are following the same path, hoping to get a different result. Hopeless, As much as our cause is noble we will never beat the Taliban because the Taliban are the Afghan people.
We will never win this war, because our enemy is in Pakistan and Saudi Arabia. Pakistan is the heart that pumps the venomous blood of terrorist all over the world, Saudi Arabia is the head that sends orders and the theological inspiration for these terrorist. They are also the lungs of the beast that send the money straight to the heart.
Ok thats some mythological serious business right there.. but yeah good post.. I would count the lungs as IRAN.. and the Hands Syria & Lebanon but seriously ... who's the fingers & toes... besides those various "in conflict" African countries.
Brutal or not, the British should leave Afghanistan now as the people there and in Iraq simply do not want them there.
Give it a rest Daniel-2 you are fooling nobody with these bogus names.
Jeez, Jongee, thanks. At least we improved it so it can be understood when spoken.
I'm an American living in Dublin Ireland. First off, Thank to all my brother and sister soldiers that put their lives on the line everyday so that I don't have to worry about my family back home becoming victims of terrorist attacks. We are very close allies with the Brits and we share information daily on terrorist threats. The bus bombings in London woke up the UK the way that 9/11 make us back home wake up. We are not any better or less than the Brits, we are different nations with similar goals. Everyone needs to get off of there high horse and stop thinking that anyone is' better' than anyone else. The Brits and European heritage have very deep roots in America. Some of you on here arguing are probably related. Quit taking yourselves so seriously for no reason. As countries we all strive to make money, we all strive to be free. That's why our soldiers, Americans and Brits are there, to show these poor, oppressed men, women and children that they deserve to be free. Women are treated like dogs, people are constantly bullied by Taliban and other groups. It won't happen over night and that's why we need to support eachother until the job is done...Everyone have a great weekend and God Bless us all.
In answer to J, have you ever heard of the battle of Britain? This took place before America entered the war. Britain won this meaning the Germans lost air supremecy meaning they could NEVER invade us.
America is already doing 90% of everything in Afghanistan so Britain is most likely getting a good deal out of this although this war is not about making material gains as some have incorrectly surmised. It's about denying Salafi influenced extremist their own country. Some Afghans actually like being free of the Taliban and their oppressive laws. Flying kites, watching movies, having a haircut the way one wants it, singing, having their daughters educated means something to some Afghans. Not to mention the ethnic genocidal attacks the Taliban did against Afghanistans various ethnic minorities. There is a moral high ground for being in Afghanistan. Just look at the cover of a recent Time magazine that had a photograph of a young Afghan woman with her face mutilated by the Taliban.
The battle of Contigny took place late May 1918 and the War ended just over 5 months later. The Canadians won a major battle at Vimy Ridge April 1917 and Passchendaele in October 1917. This resulted in major losses to the Germans and yes they tried a one last hope to rally in early 1918 in an effort to sue for peace but by then they were a spent force, the battle by attrition was not going in their favour with the realization fresh American troops were now available. The early 1918 offensive fizzled and the Germans were done. The threat of a German Revolution (the German Kaiser about to abdicate), food shortages and the deadly “Spanish flu” was hitting Germany and the knowledge the Fresh American Troops were now in the field made the end inevitable. The US was there in time to mop up what was left. Their presence was more psychological than militarily.
My son did two tours in Afghanistan and yes the US is our ally to which I am grateful but so are the Btrits.
The 'one last hope' German spring offensive battled to within a short distance of Paris... in an effort (a giant diversion as it were) to threaten the city. It was hoped that this would have drawn significant Allied troops to defend Paris and allowed for a better go in Flanders. Initially, the battle proved quite successful for the Germans, and they considered victory a possibility.
The Germans were in fact so encouraged by their 'success' in this battle (Operation Blücher-Yorck) that Gen. Ludendorff would launch further offenses in an attempt to capitalize on this 'success'. Gen. Duchene was sacked for bad handling of British/French troops...
The Allies were unable to stop this (3rd battle of Aisne) attack and suffered ~50,000 POW losses, the loss of 800 guns, along with casualties totaling ~127,000 combined French and British troops, before the Germans were finally stopped as things began to go 'wrong' for them. Again, this gives some real perspective on today's conflicts. Between May 27 and June 6, 1918, the Allies suffered ~177,000 casualties and men taken POW (!!!).
Barring the US entering the conflict, could the Allies have continued to suffer such losses... and still prevail..??
To repeat my speculative question, had the Americans NOT been there in force, arriving in dramatically increasing numbers, and shown their ability and willingness to fight hard... would the Germans have 'fizzled'..??
As a note... Gen. Haig's "plan"... one of a "war of attrition", .(!!!!!????!!!!!) did little to deplete the German forces significantly, and cost almost equal numbers of casualties on both sides. Hard to think of his leadership as anything but disastrous.
Similarly, in WWII, once the Americans 'joined' the war... the German generals with smarts concluded that Germany would 'lose the war'... it was just a matter of "how" and how long... and if some kind of armistice could be arranged. Despite this 'knowledge' these generals, and their troops fought on, in a losing tide... until VERY late in the conflict. The shear 'weight' of US economic/manufacturing/recruitment power was easily the deciding factor. Whether the US 'political' will to wage war could be maintained is for another discussion.
I commend your Son, and wish him safety and wisdom... and a quick, safe return to Canada. The Canadians have ALWAYS shown themselves as FIRST CLASS soldiers, and the best of allies... though few know of their past heroism. I've no doubt the "Canucks", the British, and the Americans, will be allies... and GOOD ones... for many, many, many generations to come.
Like all "good friends"... sometimes relationships are 'taken for granted' and talk ensues... but, the friendship is true.
Im an American, and served in the Army, and fought with many Brirish soldiers, they are good, dedicated and well trained, I would fight along side them anytime.
Regardless of the politics and the numbskulls currently in office, the British people and the vast majority of the American people (note I emphasize "people") are too closely linked by common ancestry, culture and religion to stay mad at each other for long. When push comes to shove we will always cover each other's back.
Who said the Americans won World War I ? Ummm no they did not. They came on the field in mid 1918 and the war was already won...The landing of the US troops just convinced the Germans to end it sooner. Read your history.
Agreed. Bad choice of words... but, maybe the statement should have been. How would things have turned out if he US had NOT entered WWI or WWII..???
As for reading ones history... that is ALWAYS a great piece of advice, rarely followed.
My information notes the first 'major action' by US forces in WWI as the battle of Cantigny, in which they were 'victorious'. It might be "picky" but that puts the US into the war and decisively so more 'early' 1918 than 'mid' 1918.
Considering that the Central Powers had already made a peace treaty with Soviet Russia, they could bring full weight of their armies to the Western front, and as such began their spring offensive in March. The German's second spring offensive begins a month later in April. I'm not sure if it can be said that as you say "..the war was already done.." at this point. The Americans won their first 'major action' at the Battle of Contigny. While this battle didn't determine the outcome of WWI, it notes the US involvement and growing threat to Germany. The Third Battle of Aisne encouraged the Germans to launch further offensives. Again this doesn't seem to indicate "..the war was already done..". In fact the Germans managed to advance to about 56km from Paris, and were stopped partially due to stiff resistance by the newly arrived US troops.
I think of important note.. especially to those in Britain. Britain, by it's very length of existence, has been involved in countless wars... of every conceivable kind. During just one 'battle', the Third Battle of Aisne, the British suffered around 29,000 casualties. In about 10 days of fighting... 10 DAYS... 29,000 British casualties..!! And this was in an area much, much, smaller than the country of Afghanistan. British readers/posters should read the history of their General Haig in WWI.
Any loss of life in conflict is terrible... but, can people put things in some perspective..?? According to Wikipedia, as of 8/25/10 the US has suffered 1,167 deaths SINCE HOSTILITIES BEGAN. The British have suffered 332 deaths as of 8/21/10. This equals 1,499 dead SOLDIERS who are fighting to protect us. This 'might' be compared to the 2,976 victims of 9-11-2001. And of course 52 people died in the London Subway Bombing...
Do people truly believe that if we simply leave Afghanistan, Pakistan, Yemen, Somalia, etc... that these attacks will stop..??
Actually, World War I ended because the German monarchy was about to be overthrown by communists Germans. The government at the time were worried that the communists revolution would take over Germany, and lose their German monarchy. So they made overtures tot he allies for a conditional surrender. However, the US demanded that the Kaisar step down from his throne as a condition for surrender. The British gorvernment were willing to work out a peace treaty to end the war but the US demand for the Kaisar to step down frustrate dthat so the war dragged on for a few more months. Eventually, the Germans caved in to the US governments demand and sued for peace. However later at versaillies both the French and British want to punish Germany by demanding severe reparations (in the hundreds of millions of dollars). While the USA wanted to go easy on the Germans (they just wanted an end to the German monarchy and democracy). This left a very bitter taste for the German people they were forced to lose their King (Kaisar) and forced to pay back millions of Marks which ruined their economy and left millions unemployed. This gave Hitler for ammmunition to blame the Allies and the Jews for Germany's economic woes when he grabbed power. Hence WWII was a by product of both the USA's humiliation of the German people and the British and French's greed for money that bankrupted the country. Thankfully after WWII ended they politicians learnt their lessons and made fairer demands for reparations than before and the US government set up the Marshall Plan to help restore the economies of Europe which were devastated by the war. They also let the Germans reform their own democracy with out interference from the USA. The only sad thing at that time was that the the Russians had occupied Eastern Germany for decades.
I wouldn't give credibility to the same people who lied about going to war under false pretenses. In real morality, there can't shades of it. A person is moral or immoral, but not both, they are as water and oil: Don't mix. If we all know that the wars started or continue on false grounds and lies, when people can start to believe the boy who cried wolf? Never. Let's remember that if they show something is either propaganda or smoke screen for the real reason. And the opposite is also true. If they don't show it is because it's illegal. Let's remember what Bush used to say prior to the photos of Abu Gharib? "We don't torture" he said when in reality the Chinese torture machine was 24/7. Politicians are the old snake oil peddlers of yesteryear, only fools believe in them and they paid dearly and so we have.
Wow..!! A proclamation of a 'black and white' world..!! No shades of gray in your world. Must be nice. I particularly like your statement... " Let's remember that if they show something is either propaganda or smoke screen for the real reason. "
I'm wondering who you might think "they" are... before I try to figure out the rest of the sentence.
When we stop believing the 'boy who cries wolf'... does that mean the wolf never comes..?? I think not.
The wolf ALWAYS comes... that is the nature of the wolf.
I happen to especially like the fable of "The boy who cried wolf". It is used to teach children about making false statements, the REST of the fable is lost on those who use it. What is the 'result' of ALL the actions and reactions in the fable..?? First the boy is sent to guard the sheep. Obviously a bad choice. Nobody TEACHES the boy about guarding sheep. TOWNSPEOPLE'S mistake, not the boy's. After numerous false alarms by the 'boy', nobody teaches him, nor replaces him. TOWNSPEOPLE'S mistake again, not the boy's. Nobody comes to protect the sheep when the wolf DOES come because they don't trust the boy. TOWNSPEOPLE'S mistake again, not the boy's. The end result..?? The sheep are eaten, the townspeople suffer, because wolves will ALWAYS be wolves.
There is some REAL lessons to be learned here for about 90% of the world.
"Brutal" is the best and only kind of troops to have when it comes to muslims!
I say, pull all the international troops back to a safe distance. Then air drop as many small arms as possible all over the country. Then, once they have killed each other off....should not take to long...then go in and pick up whats left.....
We did that in the 1980s, which is how we got here. OK, so it was a lot more complicated than that, Mujahadeen vs. Soviets and all. still there's no shortage of small arms over there.
This started out as an article about how tough the British troops are on training, I think, who knows. Now it has gone to Brits vs Americans, Pakis vs Afghanis, Hindus are bad, to other stupid stuff. I hate to admitt it but a lot of countries all over the world are making money in Afghanistan & Iraq, I know I work with a lot of FNs( foriegn nationals) & they are happy to be over here making money they can't make back in their home countries. As for these wars killing a lot of soldiers & civilians, innocents & contractors, just wait the next one is going to be even bigger & touch every one on earth in one way or another.
May GOD Bless & keep us all !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i'm currently serving in Afghanistan, So any of you who have ever been in the military at on point. Need to take a break from typing on this blog. Their is no money here to be made if would would only see this place it would make you appreciate what you have.
To rude1, Thank you for serving your country.
Destabilization is official U.S. and British foreign policy. We're doin' great.
Oh, like Afghanistan under the Taliban and the Warlords was "stable".
Both the Brits and the US soldiers should be going home.. the entire country is not worth one more body bag of either.
Recall where 9/11 attack was coordinated and financed from; that's our sole interest there.
Now, the result of nation-building there is not great so far- still mostly very tribal with a corrupt central gov't.
Then to commit to "COIN" strategy to support that is the BIG question. Duration and expense need honest discussion.
Viet Nam involved the same strategy with us, and we know well what we accomplished for our troubles.
Of course in Vietnam we had China competing for the "hearts & minds". In Afghanistan we at least do not have such powerful opposition.
I worry about Iran and even the Saudis undermining our efforts there, but they would have to be very subtle to get away with it wouthout the world finding out. Iran might not care. And of course there's the Pakistani Secret Service angle.
Will as long as You say So I guess We should Go Home!!! After all You know more than Those running it right???
The brits have to be over there just as much as the u.s does.Saying that the u.s should go it alone is wrong to say when the u.k has to worry about attacks in their country just as much as the u.s.
US Soldier: Why did You Repeat Yourself???
Every comment on here is just disgusting!! Britain and America are ALLIES in this war ... however wrong the war may be. Each side is assuming profits that the other is gaining, when truthfully the war is bankrupting us and the countries we are occupying. What is wrong with humanity that we wish death upon another countries people just so our own countrymen might live?? People are DYING and we are so wrapped up in Nationalism and Patriotism that it's suddenly okay for our allies to die in our place? Humanity is suffering at a terrible cost, and all you people can do is wish death upon each other and call each other names. I am truly ashamed to say that I am human at this point. Humanity has become a disease, and is quite effective at killing itself off. Can't we just support one another?
Amen to that, bro... Amen...
...Amen to Shocked, I mean. We, as humans, are no better than the animals if we continue to have so much pride. We were put on this Earth to replenish it. Not to destroy; Though it is supposedly in out nature to do so, humans are apt to change. Why not for the better?

I am also of the same opinion even though my late Father was with the Armoured Guards Division in WWII.
I am a Brit. Our soldiers die every day so that America can rake in the big bucks. I, for one, would happily see America go it alone. At least no more British troops would die for American dollars
Tess – How is America raking in big bucks by having British troops around? Have you ever been to America? Have a degree in finance?
Hey Josh, you don't need a degree to understand the bigger picture of securing and controlling a country's natural resources, that's where the bucks some in.... and why does someone have to go to America to make a comment. The U.S> missed it's chance at geting Bin Laden because they were too busy securing Oil in Iraq. These facts are undisputed and if you cannot see that you must be blind.
We would never win the War in Afghanistan are Iraq if We didn't have the Help of England!!! Because We could not afford to pay for 2 wars at one time!!! We also didn't have the Man Power to fight both wars!!!
Oh Sorry tess. How many times have you Brits got yourself in a mess and asked the Americans to help. You would be speaking German right now if the USA had stayed out of WW1 and WW2 so remember that and how many US boys died in Europe.
I'm a Brit and if the US hadn't armed Germany before they stepped in and realized their stupidity it would not be a question. We survived on our own we did not need the US.
Jackie–Germany was responsible for the choice they made for war, not the US. As far the UK handlling the Germans on their own...umm...does Dunkirk mean anything to you, cousin?
jackie? what weapons or in your words, arms did we rearm germany with? what the english and french did to humiliate germany after wwi, guaranteed that wwii would just be wwi, the sequel.
Jacky: I wonder if Your Leaders feel the same way??? Germany just had to keep bombing you before they sent the troops in there and You would be part of Germany!!! The United States saved Europe and You are to stupid to realize it!!!
I am an American. Our soldiers die every day so that a Brit can rake in the big bucks. I, for one, would happily see Britian go it alone. At least no more American troops would die for British dollars.
How you like the sound of that TESS? what a crock – you are a very ignorant fool!!!!
Oh, that's right. We're making such a profit on the Afghanistan War. Tell me–do you support defending yourself against those responsible for the London train bombings?
tess...that's just plain stupid. Britain has a greater reason to be there then we do. Where do you think the Afghans are getting all this money the US is making? They have NOTHING we want. All this vast wealth in minerals they supposedly have would take BILLIONS perhaps TRILLIONS to feasibly harvest. They have zero infrastructure, zero trained work force, zero stable government and the local economy is based on drugs. Take some time to educate yourself.
I don't no what everyone is fighting about??? You are like Children... My Daddy can beat up Your Daddy!!! It is taking both Countries to train the Afghanistan... So why are We fighting about it??? Thank GOD Are leaders aren't like You People are We be having another war against Each Other!!!
Flawed argument. It was the Colonial Britain that made the heap out of the Middle East, Pakistan, India and countless third world countries! US colonized/governed Philippines, Samoa, PuertoRico, and some islands smack in the Pacific. Who has a messed up job done, huh?
Interesting point, but actually, the U.S. approached colonialism in a more insidious way. Rather than invading a country with our own troops, we supported some of the worst dictators. We supported Pinochet in Chile, Videla in Argentina, Suharto in Indonesia, Sadam Hussein in Iraq, Mobutu in Zaire and many other unsavory figures. These nasty people did terrible things while they were in power. The overthrow of other US backed dictators such as Batista, in Cuba, arguably led to the installation of even worse dictators such as Castro. If it weren't for the U.S. support of these dictators, it is likely that these reactionary leaders would not have lead such brutal follow up regimes. This doesn't come down to an argument of who is worse between Britain and the U.S., it comes down to the continuing belief that we should support terrible people who align with our short-sighted vision of self-interest.
That was the Cold War. The philosophy was that if we didn't back the dictators, even as bad as they were, the Soviets would. It was warfare by proxy and everyone but the primaries got burned on both sides. Glad it's over, but now we are dealing with the fallout.
Yeah, everyone knows we're making money hand-over-first on our foreign wars. That's why we're in the worst recession in 80 years and $13 trillion in debt – we're making TOO MUCH proft!
The United States is losing money while Bush and Cheney get Richer!!!
The American people have an affection for the Brits, based on our long history together. Comments that degrade that relationship hurt both countries. In the future, we will have need for help from all of our allies as they will also need us.
Thank you, Willie 12345! It was wonderful to find a voice of reason just as I was despairing of humanity in general. 🙂
Great comment, totally agree. Shame I had to scroll so far down to find a voice of reason.
Of course you make no mention of the thousands of American troops who saved your little island in World War 2, we didn't do that for the riches it gave us.
How soon you people forget.
No you didn't do it at all our mighty little island has lasted longer than yours ever will.
Just for the record, I wouldn't say it was we Americans that saved Britian in WWII. If Hitler had decided to invade Britian (operation Sealion) instead of attacking the Soviet Union, there would've been nothing any of us could've done about it. One fun fact that everyone seems to forget is that 3 out of every 4 German soldiers that were killed in WWII were killed by the Soviets.
So let's all get off our high horses and play nice.
Who baled your asses out in the past? It sure wasn't Germany!
American is not making a dim in any war we are fighting were spending billliions over thier so stop complaining Briton is only giving a hndfull of soldiers compared to the USA.
It may seem like a "handful" to you but it is a lot if you think about the size of the UK! We are the 2nd largest contributors of troops to Afghanistan and for that you should be grateful.
Tess, Tess, Tess,
How nice it must be, to be clueless and ignorant. I'll bet your Military does not share your views. The British military thought not as deeply involved in Afghanistan as the USA are doing a great job. They deserve your respect. One way you can show that respect is to not embarass them with your negative comments.
Thankyou for pointing that out to Stupid Jess Marine One I presume it's USMC my husband is a Royal Marine Cammando serving in Afghanistan now and I or him do not agreed with Jess or any Birt comments. UK and America are fighting and losing lives in Afghanistan everyone should be supporting these soldiers because they have a tough job to do and they see some things that you couldn't even imagine. My husband told me that he was working with a USMC bomb disposal lad the other day and he lost his life to an IED, told me he was just married and he was a hoofin (good, great) bloke. So everyone cut out the stupid comments.
Why are You People still fighting which Country is better??? It is taking Both Countries to train them to take care of Themselves!!!
There are fools in every nation. We are in this together, my European cousin. To the enemy we are all "the West". It isn't about money, as we are all losing more on these efforts than we can afford in these troubled economic times. And it isn't about "freedom" regardless of how people may try to stretch the definition of the word. It's about national security. National security is about more than protecting against invasion. It is about the safety of our citizens at home and abroad from threats coming from outside the influence of domestic law enforcement.
And, in the case of the Taliban, it's about war. Just in case you missed it, they formally declared war against the US in May. So from that point, any argument about justification based on response to terrorism is moot.
what rock did you just crawl out from under? Take another hit off that joint.
We have to fight together if you want to keep This World free!!!
Free from what? And stop using my name, please. It makes me look bad.
My father was 34 years in the Army and had alot of friends in the British regiments. I was appalled that those troops removed their boots to have "tea" with the locals. If they were suddenly attacked they would have to struggle to get the boots back on or assume combat positions without them. Not a good idea, the soles are reinforced to protect the feet. If a local offers you anything to drink, you only make a show of putting it to your lips, you don't actually drink it – it could be poisoned. If the locals take offense, that's too bad – the same man offering you tea could be reporting info to the Taliban and later that night be shooting at you. Their sense of honor and ethics in warfare is polar opposite to ours.
Wise up Carole, just when are you going to realize that this is no more than a propaganda ploy?Anything to make NATO look good!!!
I was not commenting on the wisdom of our being out there, the objectives, the ramifications or NATO. It was only about their training precepts. Politicians have been creating wars for profit and spinning viewpoints since biblical times.
I disagree with American way as well. But we are free you fool. Go ahead, give away your freedom that you did not fight for. Let those would died fighting for it, die in vein. Good job meat head. I see your psots and dont understand what you argue for. You have no beleifs. You think America is a bully, which we are, but you never fight to fix it. Only criticize.
Carole Clarke: Not all Poiticians are bad!!! There are a lot of Them that try to do the right thing... But it is because of the Few that brings out the hate on other even though they are true... That makes it hard for the others to do the right thing??? This Country is suppose to be a Equal obedienity Country!!! But the 2 percent doesn't want to give Us that right!!!
"Their sense of honor and ethics in warfare is polar opposite to ours"
Wow, what an ignorant comment. And how the hell do you know this?????
Carole, My 19 year old brother died in Iraq protecting your freedom. How dare you say we as Americans are unethical in times of war? You liberals make me sick and degrade this country unlike anything I have ever seen. Go put on a pair of combat boots and fight for something larger than yourself, or go join the Taliban and see how ethical and upright that group of killers is to you!!
As much I feel for you pain Thill, your brother did not die for our freedom. There is no way some Iraqi local (IN HIS OWN COUNTRY) with an AK 47 playing part time insurgent was fighting to take our freedom away. If anything else, that insurgent was fighting to fight for his freedom (IN HIS OWN COUNTRY) after his country was invaded, and occupied by our troops which your brother was part of. I would have never taken part in that immoral war. So please do not compare Iraq with Afghanistan. Totally different wars.
Reil: All Our Military People are fighting not only to free the People of other Countries!!! But they are keeping Other Countries from bring the War to Our Country!!! It is to bad You are To stupid to realize that??? Those of Us that were in the Military are lose a Love One fighting For Our Country know even that!!!
You would agree with any Idiot!!! Because You are one...
To Caroles comment of course. To everyone else that doesnt get it. You are the sheep in the lions den. You fools have been untouched by the brutal reality of the worl. Love and understaning is the answer. The problem is, the lion doesnt want to understand the sheep. He wants to destroy it. You fools will lead us to the end of freedom.
If the Leaders of this Country thought the way You do!!! We would be under someone else not America!!! We fought off the Nazi, Communist and now the Tarriest!!! If You were running This Country they all would have taken over This Country... If You want your freedom You have to fight to keep it!!! Anyone that isn't a Idiot would know that...
We do shuras daily, yes we drink the tea, yes the boots (sometimes) come off, but never in the field, or when there is potential for an attack. We are in Afghanistan, not because of the US, remember hte world was attacked on 9/11 not just the US, the US was where the bombs hit but could have been Big Ben, Westminster or WHitehall just as easily. When we arrive in their country, about 80,000 kids in school, majority or all males, now there is over 3 million kids in school, women were being stoned in the market place, Friday executions in the Soccer Pitch, not any more, young girls being castrated, still being practiced but we're educating the people this is wrong, the Taliban so oppresive, that death was the sentence for showing too much skin, not now, is domocracy perfect there, does it look like our democracy, no it doesn't but no longer do Taliban or aAl-Qaeda, train in the open, design attacked and carry them out, that is why we're there not for the USa interest, for all our interest. If we pull out now, inside of a year, they'll attack your subways again, and crash planes into your building killing your family and friends, that is why I am there, why almost every soldier who comes home, I have met, says they want to go back because it is a good mission, a real mission not the phony UN Peacekeeping mission where you get to stand around and watch genicide, or ethicnic cleansing and are powerless to staop it. Next time you see any soldier remember they paid for your freedon, A Soldier is someone, who at one point in their life, wrote a blank cheque made payable to the people and Gov't of Canada/UK/USA an amount up to, and including their life. ..... We should never forget that!!! Freedom isn't free, it was paid for by your soldiers, if you like your freedom, thank a soldier. Next time you see someone in uniform, shake their hand and just say ... thanks
I have 10 plus years Army special forces , served in all major conflicts and many minor one i cant tlk about about since 1990. One has to follow some coustumes of the local culture inorder to gain their respect, u cant goto a country an say this is my religion this is my custum this is my launge and expect to gain favor with the local people. force multiplier means winning the hearts of the locals not rulling them with bruit force. So if it means a one or two guys in ur patroll have to take off their booots to have tea with the locals thna so be it British has a good army and they know what there doing unlike U.
I would just like to say " THINK YOU " and to all the military personal Thank You
I thought freedom cost a buck o'five?
Are You saying that WWII, Korea War and Vietnam Wars were not necessary???
Im an ex infanteer and fought alongside the US infantry, I had no problem with the Yanks and they had no problem with us. SO tell me please what the he ll are you lot on about WW2? It's like an old record playing over and over again, sure without the support of the US Europe would have been under NAZI control for a lot longer than it was, but without the UK standing up to Hitler for 2 years before the US came on board there would have not been freedom in Europe! Remember, the US didn't give us the arms, we had to buy them and bankrupt our country. You really didn't do us any favours. Please wind your necks in and give us all a rest, well seen you're not military!!!
Wow Carole, how much combat time do you have? I drink tea with the locals all the time while im deployed, as its a great way to establish report, and show them that you're human, not just a robot with body armor. Just because they are brown dosent mean afghans are all bad. I'd be more worried about malaria than some afghani trying to poison me. Reading some distilled newpaper article dosent make you an expert on afghani culture.
Not everyone is out to Kill You!!! I really don't think the enemy would get close enough to Poison You... That is the problem with the World that know one trust anyone else!!! He have to learn trust and Respect if You ever want PEACE in This Country are the World...
May your terrorist father rot in hell.
To all the posters who are continually going on about the British speaking German if it wasn't for the US entering the war consider this: If it wasn't for the British you wouldn't have a Country we invented it, thats why you lot speak ENGLISH. GOT IT???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
Actually, the United States began with the cast offs of Britain and other European nations, and those who wanted to turn their backs on your evolved way of life. Britain then attempted through their military and economic strength to force her rules on us for her own benefit.
We rose up and kicked her out, and we the people of the United States invented something that had never before existed on this earth.
We did that in spite of Great Britain, not because of her. Britain tried to re-exert her influence in 1812, and nearly succeeded, until we defeated her again.
In spite of those ocurrences, when England could not defend herself, we came to her aid, with money, material and manpower. Most of which we have never once asked you to repay. We have never asked for your thanks. But, we really don't need your personal silly little slanders either.
You are welcome.
You didn't invent jack. It was composed by those that wanted a better life religious freedom. They chose to not be a part of Merry old England. Get over it. I remember The United States Saving your behind in World War I , World War II.
the colonies were already established in this country befor the brits ever arrived.recommend u study american history u idiot. then we put a woopin on them .then they left,, sheeees.!
Feather Wearer: I am Jewish and I have as much right to be here as you do!!! It was wrong that the United States took Your Country the way We did... But why should those of Us that had nothing to do with it have to pay for it??? I agree with You that Those that don't want to Learn Our ways to go back to their Country!!! But the Majority of Americans not only learned Our ways but help make it better!!! What I would like to see is the Racist leave This Country so that We can live in PEACE with each other... I feel that even You Indians should have the same rights as the rest of Us!!!
SternBerg: We have gone a long ways... But the problem is we are going backwards instead of forward!!! Until All People has the right to live right in This Country it will never be perfect... That goes for Indians, Woman, Gays, African Americans and Other Americans that try to live by Our rights!!! The problem is between the Criminals, Illegals,Tea Party, Republicans and the Rich it will never happen!!!
Jongee – Invented? give or take a few hundred years, either the Spanish or Danes were the European finders of North America and certainly the French, Germans, Italians and other contributed greatly. English, was the language – not the country.
Take the Great out of Great Britain. You are not a world power any more and neither are you a naval power. I was in London recently for a visit after 40 years and was astounded at the number of Asians in the city. You can only blame yourselves for your open friendly immigration policies! Ex-pat Brit.
HAHAHAHAHA....you lost the war....deal with it. You would be speaking German without us loser. Get over it.
Sternberg, we wouldn't have won our revolutionary war without significant French intervention, and the War of 1812 was anything but a US victory. Read some history.
when will americans ever learn to shut the mouth so that the ears can listen
He said that the British invented English. Not that they invented America.
Invented a country? so you basically took a continents worth of dirt, water, and rock and placed it there? Really? Cause if the British can do that, please build one somewhere near antarctica where we can send all the terrorists and illegal immigrants. Then id kiss the Queens feet
Jongee... relax a second... English is the 'language' of the USA because of the IRISH...
Not the English...
With some poking around.. you'll be able to find plenty on this fact. English was one of many languages originally spoken in the USA, but not the 'most spoken'... until the Irish arrived. They spread English across the country AS WELL as Irish/Scottish music which we here call "Country Music"... check it out, and learn something today.
BlueFox: The only true Americans were the Indians!!! The Ones at that time came from Europe and England!!! Those People didn't want to live under the English ways... That is why We fought them to make This Country free!!! If this country was the way that They fought for... It sure wouldn't be in the mess We have today!!! They wanted all people to have a equal chance to better Themselves... Not just the Rich!!! The way things are now... We would be better off under England... Because the Rich are the only one that has anything now!!!
If You read anything I said it was not bad about England!!! All I said was the reason We didn't want to be under England any more... If you also notice I said that the way things are today in America that We be better off still under the English!!! I think it is Great that both Countries are fighting together foe PEACE in Afghanistan... I can also understand Why They didn't help Us in Iraq!!!
Hear, hear...America needs a war on stupid.
yeah, everything on the west coast, actually all over the US, is spanish but not by choice. The language's being forced upon us and there is nothing we can do about it.
Being half English and half America, i can share a unique perspective into this. it might help some of the more narrow-minded people out there. First of all, I have had the opportunity to travel the world, which has enlightened me to wonderfully fantastic countries everywhere. New Zealand is my favourite (favorite). But moving on. I suppose it is quite likely that without England, America would be very different and would probably be spanish or French speaking. The entire world would be different and WW1 and WW2 would not have happened in the way they did. It is easy to understand that Americans are more thana little jealous at having to borrow so much history and culture from Britain. it is also easy to understand how hurt the Brits are to be usurped in so many areas of pride by mighty America. Consider this, most of the people who argue about this have the intellectual ability of my right testical. I have spent half my life in both countries and quite honestly , i have met some of the biggest idiots in the two countries. i have also met some of the most amazing people. A man who served for Montgomery as a liason officer to General Clark (an American) said this, "America saved our future, we were on our knees in WW2. Thank God for the noble American. i love them" I have met some of those Americans who "saved the bacon" as some of you young unmilitary Americans say. They are some of the most humble, lovely brave people on this planet and they are offended and insulted by the way the younger Americans portray their heroics. Also most young Brits have a problem saying "Thank you America" . Quite honestly though I think England is probably owed a Thank you or two as well. God Bless America and England...and new Zealand,,and I'm gonna be generous and say everyone else as well!!
The only Americans who get to say "If it wasn't for us etc..." are the one's who actually fought in WW2, everyone else, YOU DID NOTHING, stop trying to claim credit for something you played no part in whatsoever.
Agrajag, bravo! You're absolutely right!
And everyone crying about ripping our soldiers out of Iraq and Afghanistan because it's not fair to them, or we're putting them in danger...the large majority of us know we should be over there and that we're doing good things for desperate people. I understand you may not be able to take the heat from over here in your recliner, watching the news, but don't disrespect our forces by thinking for one second that they need you crying foul on their behalf!
