Photo Spotlight: Gum on the street

A woman in a burqa and gloves sells gum on the streets of Kabul.  Under Taliban rule women were not allowed to leave their homes without being escorted by a male relative and were required to wear a burqa which covered their bodies from head to toe. Though women have more freedom now than under Taliban rule, some still wear the burqa.

The woman in the picture might as well not exist. What is the point if you can't interact with anyone and nobody can see you? You are just some dirty secret.

In many muslim parts of the world if a woman goes around without a burqa she is constantly harrassed by men who assume that since she is not wearing a burqa she must be easy, and maybe they can get laid... many choose to wear the burqa, not because they are conservative or because they like the burqa, but because it is the only way to be left alone by pigs.

And how did this person get American gum to sell on the streets,
al least now we know where some of the supplies being sent to our troops can be located.

Thanks for reminding us that there is a real need for our military and their families to be willing to sacrifice daily-
their lives or their loved ones- to try to help make this world a better place for all,
where all nations need to unite together against terrorism NOW!!!!.
