Your view: Are the documents a national security threat?

WikiLeaks.org, a whistleblower website, published on Sunday what it says are about 76,000 U.S. military and diplomatic reports about Afghanistan filed between 2004 and January of this year. (15,000 more will be added after editing out names to protect people.)

The United States "strongly condemned" their release, Pakistani officials dismissed the contents as lies, and the Afghan government expressed amazement.

National Security Adviser Gen. James Jones issued a statement Sunday calling the documents' release "irresponsible." "The United States strongly condemns the disclosure of classified information by individuals and organizations which could put the lives of Americans and our partners at risk, and threaten our national security," the statement said.

Julian Assange, the founder of the website, denies that WikiLeaks has put troops in danger. "There have been prosecutions because of material being on WikiLeaks. There have been legislative reforms because of material being on WikiLeaks," he said. "What has not happened is anyone being physically harmed as a result." But he said he hoped his website would be "very dangerous" to "people who want to conduct wars in an abusive way."

What do you think? Some have praised the site as a beacon of free speech, while others have criticized it as a threat to national security. Should the documents be posted? Why or why not? Add your comment below.

Trust Pakistan.. now that is an oxymoron !!! We give these guys billions of dollars in aid and what do they do – shoot us behind our back. All the major terror attacks in the world have ties to Pakistan and that is where most of the attacks are also funded from.

Wow a lot of hot air flying around here. For us old timers this resembles Vietnam era pentagon papers. Although I'm not happy about their publication because I do think they put some of our young soldiers at risk, this is what a free press and democracy is all about. For better or worse wars are terrible and everyone knows this when you read these logs. The issue is what to do now. Do we walk away and the Taliban take over, make women walk with leashes and force them to be illiterate, and allow Bin Laden a hero's welcome? Do we find some way to do it right? Is there a right way to do war? I will admit I just don't know. But thoughtful people need to put their heads together and make a decision.

The fact that they refuse to say where they got these docs or how they got them makes me believe they have something to hide. This is not 'whistle blowing' to reveal something that is illegal. They should be investigated to the fullest extent and if they obtained these docs illegally, then go to jail. Or better yet, go to Iraq.

Thanks for puttiing our troops in more jeopardy than they are already in. You should all be tried for treason.

I bet most of you have never had to stand up and kick-in. Your freedoms in this have been bought and paid for by far better men and women than you. Some of them were and are my friends and relatives. Yes mistakes have been made; but note that mistakes are made in every war and the innocent unfortunately suffer with the guilty. As for the people that leaked classified information. If they are appended, their citizenship should be taken from them. They should become people without a country adrift in the world.

I am a loyal American citizen, but I think the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq are wrong, wrong, wrong.
I think it is vile and cruel that American men and women in our armed forces have had to die and be horribly maimed to try and change the mind of those people dominated and influenced by the hatred spewed forth to Muslims via Al Qaeda, Bin Laden, and the Taliban.

These are the type of wars that CANNOT be won. Anyone with a brain knew that at the inception of both wars. That our stupid military leaders couldn't figure that out is horrifying! That our congressional leaders couldn't figure that out is just as sickening.

I hate what our country has done out of stupidity and hubris. We should keep our damned nose out of other countries' business. We should have simply targeted Al Queda, Bin Laden, and the Taliban and done what the Israelis did to Nazi war criminals - covert assasinations. If we'd done that with 1/2 the efficiency of the Israelis, many more, if not all, of freedom's enemies, radical Islamists, would be dead!

The inescapable conclusion is that the USA is financing all sides of the conflict in Afghanistan.
It is the American made surface to air missiles that are bringing down the US helicopters, it is the American made bullets that are killing our boys and it is American money bribing Afghan commanders-($100,000) –notice-not yen, or pounds or rubles-but U$ DOLLARS!!! Money printed by our treasury!!!

The leaks merely confirm what people have already suspected. There's nothing new hear.

"The conservatives see man as a body freely roaming the earth, building sand piles or factories—with an electronic computer inside his skull, controlled from Washington. The liberals see man as a soul freewheeling to the farthest reaches of the universe—but wearing chains from nose to toes when he crosses the street to buy a loaf of bread." – Ayn Rand

#1 This is treason. The Wikileak organization received the information from a US soldier who had access to classified information. That soldier should be hanged like the laws of treason are written. #2 Wikileak release twisted video of a group of people being shot at and killed in Iraq. They represented and edited it to make it seem like it was innocent civilians, but on further research and with sound the truth showed that the US military act with the rules of engagement and the individuals were terrorists. For those that think this will not stoke the terrorists propoganda think again. The terrorists will not fact check and try to see all sides. They will take this and turn around to some Afgan kid and say, "see the US and Nato are evil. You must commit to jihad." and so the saga will continue and our soldiers with be at higher risk because some foreign guy has a problem with the US and will lie to get attention. When are people going to learn that context matters? This is a disaster.

I see nothing that threatens national security or our troops in the field. Just the opposite if you think about it –it depicts our country putting the troops at risk for political reasons. If Pakistan is aiding the Taliban, double dealing, and providing sancutary for insurgents, we need to call them on it -no more aid – and hit them hard. Afghan is looking more and more like Vietnam where we asked our soldiers to fight an insurgency with 2 hands tied behind their backs If we cannot wage a war to win it, the troops need to be pulled out. Right now, our white house is acting stupidly as is our State Department. We look impotent as a nation. We have no business in Afghanistan – GET OUT NOW

It's not our job (nor the press nor wikileaks, nor the republicans/democrats, nor some random commentator) to
    a) determine if these are inded sensitive
    b) determine the consequences of release
    c) determine the ramifications
    d) determine if there are signs or war crimes from the skewed data

This is the job of the government and military apparatus. We pay them to do this. The stuff is not revealed for a reason. They understand the reasons. if you don't trust them vote them out. The action as it stands would appear to be treason to me.

While I think what the website has done is wrong, unfortunately there is not a whole lot we can do about it because (if I understand this correctly) it is an Australian based site. However, the people who leaked this information need to be prosecuted to the full extent of the law underneath the Uniform Code of Military Justice. Their actions were treasonous and they knowingly and willingly stole United States military property (I believe information falls underneath the category of intellectual property). Because of this, our future war effort is now going to be hampered and damaged by the publics willful misinterpretation of this information. I have seen this before. They will nitpick and focus on bits and pieces and not the overall picture. Speaking as a former Marine, the traitors who stole this information and released it have now jeapordized aspects of our national security and depending on the information released, possible security and safety of the men and women involved in the struggle over there. So while I do not think they should be executed, I think they certainly need to be rounded up and given hard-time busting rocks with a sledgehammer for the next 10 years.

*sigh* Besides the fact that Wikileaks is not a US owned or operated site – therefore treason is off the table (read before you blindly post) – take a look at some of the reports on the site. Oh, and BTW – the first US president committed treason; that's why there *IS* a US. Be careful tossing that word around. Let history make the judgment.

Some of the civilian deaths reported on the site are appalling. Women, some pregnant, killed and injured at a wedding celebration – due to coalition forces missing the target. As horrific as that is, I am well aware that is a possibility in war. The question to ask is, are we there for the right reasons? Should we be there at all?

One of the best jokes in "The Princess Bride" was, "You fell victim to one of the classic blunders. The most famous is 'Never get involved in a land war in Asia'...". You would think that after Vietnam, after the USSR tried and failed in Afghanistan for 10 years...

...I leave the end of that sentence as an exercise for the reader.

WikiLeaks is a disgrace. What they have done is place soldiers and marines in danger while not really giving out any more knowledge than we already had. We've known for a long time that we can't trust the Pakistanis, that the Taliban has been resurgent and that civilians have been wounded or killed by both Taliban and Nato forces. The reports I have heard have said that all of the material leaked was "Secret" or below which means that all WikiLeaks has done is make fighting the abusers of women and others who don't agree with their hateful and intolerant religious views that much more difficult.

It's great that everyone has some opinion. The truth is that likely the "whistleblower" was not even supposed to have this likely top secret information so crime number one was just to have it in their possesion. Crime number two was to pass it along to another unauthorized person. Even though it may not legally be one, Crime 3 was to publish the info maybe jeopardizing our troops and other military issues that have nothing to do with anything "bad". Wikileak saw an opportunity for controversy, publicity and took it without regard America. My country may not always be right but, IT'S MY COUNTRY RIGHT OR WRONG!

May God Bless Wikileaks and all who sail in her. Facilities such as Wikileaks are the bane of criminals in positions of power, and provide fuel for the engine of true democracy, by providing vital information to we the people (who?) in how *our tax dollars* are being misspent to featherbed the "croneyocracy" of the military-industrial-entertainment-media complex.

The current obsession with "national security" is a fear based propaganda campaign spun up by the military/security/intelligence community, endorsed by corporate media weasel brigade, to invoke a false sense of patriotism amongst a sizable section of the US population in the same way that other rogues of the past (including Hitler, Stalin, Pinochet, Saddam, Idi Amin, etc etc etc) have also invoked the old "national security" chestnut to manipulate and deceive their own people.

One day in the near future, critical mass will be achieved, the penny will drop nationwide, and we the people will take matters into our own, very capable hands. The future of our great (and potentially far greater) nation depends absolutely on a huge, major shake up.

The truth should be a good thing.... When the truth is not justifiable one treads a shady path... Everyone, soldier or not, should be able to answer for his/her actions.

Thus the danger of religion which removes the responsibility of the individual and places it in the will of a deity. A person who can sleep with bloodied hands frightens me, but the one who wipes them off on a cloth and believes he wakes up clean is more dangerous by far.

Free speech is nothing more than opinion without free access to information. The stuff on wikileaks today does not threaten national security–it was simply classified to prevent US citizens from learning the truth about this war. It is like the false reports that Army Corporal Pat Tillman was killed by hostile file or like the reports that Afghan taxi driver died of a heart attack (In fact his legs were pulpified by being beaten with M16 butts while he hung from the ceiling of our prison at Bagram). Sunshine is the best disinfectant. I am sending $100 bucks to wikileaks today.

Julian Assange has posted the truth but yet people are actually calling for his death? Unfortunately these comments seem like mostly insane right wingers who feel anything should be allowed in war. Personally I do not even consider Afghanistan a war.

The government couldn't care less about national security, they just want to cover their tracks. Wikileaks is a breathe of fresh air in a world full of cover-ups and classified bureaucracies. Keep up the good work, Julian.

It appears US and NATO troops are guilty or very suspected of various war crimes against the Afghanistan people. Even the utterly corrupt Harmid Karzai repeatedly charged that CIA special op's had numerous midnight raids which directly resulted in the slaughter of large numbers of Afghanistan women and children.

When the Russian soldiers occupied Afghanistan, they also specifically targeted the Afghanistan children. It appears the CIA and some Special Op's units are doing the same thing. During the Russian occupation it was found if a Afghani child had their leg blown off or was severely injured, the adult men in that family would stay home to tend to their severely injured children rather than take up arms in the Taliban Occupation Resistance fighter movement.

The Russians poured out toy's that exploded upon contact and millions of plastic butterfly shaped land mines filled with a liquid explosive and fully capable of blowing a leg of anyone that stepped on them.

As in the war in Vietnam, the livestock across Afghanistan has undoubtedly been shot and slaughtered by depraved and callous US and NATO troops on the ground and from in the air. It is difficult if not impossible to learn how wide spread that is in Afghanistan. It is just as important however to understand that is occurring and not allow the US Military complex to stifle news of US and NATO war crimes against the Afghanistan people.

We, the American People, are put in the dark about everything, and I seriously mean everything! Not only are we ordered to shut the heck up, we are also harassed and threatened by the CIA when things like this happen. I would not doubt it one single bit if the Founder is currently being threatened with his life by the CIA or their black ops! The secret organization that is run by the CIA which no one even knows about and only speculate about, even though there are MANY of us that know of this secret group. America has and always will be 'seeking world dominance' and this is how they do it! I'm sure that is NOT what Benjamin Franklin and the rest of our forefathers had wanted or planned when they made the Declaration of Independence! We are a Nation that was built on immigration and a supposed Freedom yet we have no REAL freedom! Do your own research and figure out the truth for yourselves and stop with the ignorant thinking and behaving! Most Americans think and act in a Mindless way instead of a Mindful way.

Let's drop Julian Assagne into the middle of Ft. Hood or any other military base and see what reaction he gets. He probably thinks this will get him a pulitzer. I'm not reading a 76,000 page report but aside from a few things that might make some gasp, is there really anything that we HAD to know? It's one thing to blow your wistle on a wrong-doing Wall Street firm or a politician with his/her hand in the register but I would consider this is treasonable, (if not is should be), as others have commented. Is this guy a military stratigist/advisor? Is he part of a governemt think tank? How does he know what helpful information the enemy might gleen off of what he published. Wikileak saw an opportunity to cause a stir and get some publicity. I hope it doesn't come cheap. If you have to get permission from the NFL to "re-broadcast any portion" of their games, (and it seems people respect that), I would think the FEDS could do something similar. Those of NOT crying "treason" must be un-American. Anyone have some realiable and verifiable dirt on Assange? Let's print it and see how he feels. Jerk.

For those of you cryingtreason; trying to stifle freedom of the press is the real treason at issue here. This is a textbook case of the scenario for which freedom of the press is designed...to bring to light the secrets that governments want to hide, but that informed citizens need to knmow to make informed decisions. As noted, the same voices called treason when the Pentagon Papers were published, but they ended a pathetic and delusional chapter in our nation's history and directly saved lives of American troops and civilians...anyone with eyes to see can view the obvious fact that the warnings of impending doom if we " lost in Vietnam" were completely off the mark, as will be the hallucination of the neocons and their apologists whi think we can remake the Arab Muslin world into a Walmart / McDonalds suburb. It's funny how those who call the exercise of 1st amendment rights treachery are usually the same crybabies who think the second amendment is one of the 10 commandments. Also interesting that those who call truth treachery never hesitate to call our Commander in Chief a traitor, especially if he's a Democrat, and doubly especial if he's black. For the few who've bothered to read this material, there's nothing here that remotely threatens national security or soldiers lives except the feckless and delusional policies that are exposed.

I generally tend to think that information is not a bad thing. I think an organization lying to its citizenry about its involvement is treasonous–especially if the lying puts its great nation at risk. When you cover up the deaths of civilians, you can hide it from the American public and you can prevent condemnation at home and abroad, but for every person you wrongly kill, even if accidently, you just created a large number of enemies because each person has family and friends. You haven't hidden the deaths from them. They know...and they are the people you will be fighting next. None of what I have heard is unexpected or shocking–I think we all pretty much could guess at a lot of this. What I think is criminal is that these things aren't public domain so that we the American people can make decisions based on truth and fact. If the American people won't support a war in which large numbers of innocents are killed or in which we are facing intractable problems, who are the military and our govt to hide these things from us? How can we be an informed citizenry if we aren't informed. Nothing in these reports yet seem sensational to me–they are things we should have known from before. If they are kept from us to keep us artificially supporting this war...well that just seems treasonous to me.

You and others who think this is the way to go should be proud that you have helped the enemy kill more of our troops and civilians. We do not go after civilians, the Taliban does. Wake up morons. The site should suffer for their stupidity and for their endangerment they have created for our troops. And for those who think that we are wrong, then why not try to go live in Afghanistan. Maybe then you will know about war. Its easy to criticize from your comfortable easy chair, which is most likely because a soldier at one time protected your freedom so you could sit there and criticize. Wake up America!

The first comment is completely racist. No-one cares about Talibans, but it is illegal and immoral to murder civilians – war or not. Almost ten years on from 9-11 700,000 Americans have died from car accidents, smoking and various other things – do you advocate a war on Detroit? Should we carpet-bomb marlboro country? No – becasue its only OK to kill brown people – no matter what. We are Americans – we are toddlers. Someone hit us and we will continue our tantrum no matter who else gets hurt. I guess the next time a white person murders a non-white all the minorities have the moral right to retaliate against all whites including you and your snotty-nosed kids. They are worth no more than an Afghan child.

As for your list of five –

#1 if he existed would "turn the other cheek" not slaughter indiscriminately

#2 Dies for whats left of the Empire and the Britsih business -not the people.

#3 Dies when the US tells them to

    #4 Fights for corporate empire-building

    #5 They have soldiers?

Your comments indicate your ignorance as if no other free country has had soldiers die for a free people. And you ignoramuses have been calling the shots for too long which is why we are in this quagmire

You are saying there are war crimes; specifically, what are they. Civilians being killed in a war, although very sad and unfortunate, does not make it a crime and if those casualties are not reported to the public, that too, does not make it a crime. There are people who think they have a need to know everything that happens everywhere as soon as it happens. That is not reality.

The more I read of this the more it appears that the real crime here is the war itself.

When I viewed footage a while back of the shooting of reporters, I wondered how this could possibly happen.

I have only begun to read this stuff, but I now wonder how it has not happened more, and in fact I am inclined to think it is far more commonplace and the only thing that made the Reuters event stand out was the fact that they broke the story.

We are Americans, to borrow from Ford(even though I am a Dodge guy, they say it best, Quality is Job #1.

If our guys putting their asses on the lines and dying in our name are lacking adequate intelligence data to perform the mission with confidence and success then the mission needs to seriously consider standing down until adequate intelligence is gathered and supplied.

Killing civilians, the press, our own guys, these are all far beyond very bad. In fact I would assert that killing 1 wrong person is far worse than not killing 1000 or more of the real enemy. This is based on how such incompetence on our part is seen by the people of Afghanistan, America and the world as a whole. Avoidable accidents are not accidents, they are incompetence. We can and must do better.

Pointing out that it has to be done by a mysterious "rogue" organization like wikileaks and not any of the so-called mainstream news organizations may be gratuitous but I do remember that days when this type of work was their mission. I suspect that there are two types of reactions to this with media types – those that are at least a little embarrassed at the fact that investigative work of this type is now being outsourced and those that are too shallow or afraid of corporate owners and/or advertisers to really care

if your behavior is dictated by their actions, you are neither free nor good anymore and the bad guys win, it's that simple. our so-called open societies are, at best, a work-in-progress that needs to be cared for and protected. let the bushes, the cheneys and their ilk take over and they will. they care for their own, the rich, the connected, the powerful. look at new orleans, let's just say that if it had happened in malibu, things might have been different.
political preferences aside, the bush admin lied and cheated and fixed every game they could. we need to be careful of those who would claim to protect us from ourselves. obama seems to be a little better but he has not stopped renditions or closed guantanamo so let's keep an eye on him too.

Everytime you hear about information being released, the first thing shouted from the rafters is the danger in which the troops will be placed. Are we really so naive as to think that they were previously unaware of the thousands of innocent civilians being killed on a near daily basis by our carelessness and, even now, by our refusal to address our methods and tactics?

There are those in the military who constantly want to throw around the fact that they're out there willing to die for our freedoms. Fine. Do it. Die for the right way. Don't die for cutting corners. For the supposed "easy way". Washington, Jefferson and company didn't need to kill innocent civilians (an innocent bystander in the American Revolution was another American) to send the British packing. Put your life on the line for the ideal and nothing less. America isn't a flag or an army. It's an idea. You can let others take it away from you or you can willingly throw it to the wind everytime you look the other way. If you're going to die, die for the truth and nothing less. Otherwise you're just dying in order to be the biggest and the baddest. Sounds like a gang of thugs to me.

Their ranks are just as emboldened by their own idea. Until we're willing to really try to convince them that our idea is right (first and foremost by adhering to it ourselves) and not just try to convince them every single time with a bullet or bomb, they will keep coming in waves.

The most troubling thing about all of this is not the harm that may result, but the complete lack of remorse for the harm we have already caused. Hell, we make more of a stink over it getting out than we ever did about preventing it. Doesn't sound like someone trying to fix something so much as trying to keep it swept under a rug. Would you feel sympathy for us knowing this fact?

What I am trying to say is that US government artificially create enemies to keep the war industry alive and for economiccal reason. I made the Switzerland and Finland exemplum to assert that terrorist threath is at least deeply overstated. The internal securitiy is the key work to do. It is not possible to run all over the world firing bombs becouse you will multiplicate the enemy. So even the americans should be grateful to Wikileak. I am sorry for the soldiers, but risk is their job. Americans were forced to go to Vietnam war just to been told 20 years later that war been wrong by US general Schwarzkoppf. So may be after 20 years also this war will be considered wrong. I don't feel the soldiers are protecting me, on the contrary they are putting my life at risk of retaliation. US civilians were never hit in their home before 9/11 and it was a shock, but sadly it is pretty normal in the war. My country had civilian causualties and even London was bombed in WWII.

The men and women serving there are American heroes and are doing a great job. As a matter of fact I would go as far as to blame the liberals of this country as to tying the hands of our service people. For it is these people that won't let us fight this war and win it.

The biggest threat to American lives in Afghanistan comes from our stupid and shortsighted policy of having an army there trying to remake Afghan Moslem society into some sort of a secular, friendly democracy. That goal is impossible. Our policy is based on winning the hearts and minds of the Moslem population whose hearts and minds are devoted to the doctrines of Islam, one of which doctrines teaches them that all non-Moslems are enemies. We need to get out a.s.a.p. and let the chips fall where they may. We can always go back in quickly in order to destroy any new Moslem terrorist training camps - which is our only interest there in the first place. We achieved that eight years ago, and we can do it again if necessary.

Attacking terrorist training bases in Afghanistan was the US policy BEFORE 9/11 and it did not work! If we leave now the "rodents" will just return, regroup and re-attack us again in the future at THEIR convenience and when we are least expecting it. We are not winning the war because we are NOT aggressive enough. We should be unleashing a total commitment to destroying the enemy and get this war finished with a victory!

Yo ricardo, suck up some of this truth. Blanket judgements like the ones you make are the signs of a small mind. Not all of us here in the US are exstatically happy with the way our country is. We have a bunch of greedy people running the economy into the ground, politicians using an electorial system with no accountability for campaign promises, they outlaw marijuana but continue to sell alcohol and tobacco. Yeah we have our fair share of problems, but no more or less than any other nation. How about you go take a good long honest look in your back yard and tell me with a straight face you're country doesn't have the same problems. Not all of us worship the ground those hollywood plastics walk on. Not all of us bathe in crude oil profits. Not all of us are hateful and just sit in an office all day commenting on CNN. Not all of us go to church, or even the same church. Not all of us are egotistically blind to our country's faults. and not all of us have given up on our country yet. I'll admit, I hate the way things are going in our country right now. I'm not talking about the people doin the right thing either, I;m referencing how we cry like babies about our nation being behind in education, yet dramatically cut funding for it. I'm talking about how we have the worst healthcare system in the world and our answer?? Health insurance is mandatory??? Not a fix. How about immigration. Maybe between 1500-1800 we were a nation of immigrating peoples. But I was born here, and I am no immigrant. We have so many problems in our country because we elect the best of the worst people. Only those with enough money to campaign can even hope to get votes. Yeah our country might be bad, but at least I can Pray to whoever I want, Listen to whatever music I want, Watch whatever shows I want, Read whatever publications I want, and Drive wherever I want, Love whoever I want. A lot of other countries are like this as well, but some are not. Like I said we have our problems, and right now the only problem I have is that someone who doesn't even live here talkin crap about my TEAM. So step up or step off Hombre, because these colors don't run!

Roy, I believe when a government asks it's citizens to put their lives up on the line and shoot/kill other human beings, there should be nothing kept secret. IF a government feels they have a reason to go into (invade) another nation, then we the people who elected in infringing government have the right to know and understand WHY those elected officals feel the need to invade. I believe the citizen of every country has the right to know how the people he/she cast a vote for are running the government we elected. IF these "secrets" in fact are told, and a government is found to be lying about the dealings they are doing that are killing/hurting the peoples of another country, then that/those elected officals should be brought up before the world court and put on trial and if found guilty, hung in a public hanging just as Mr Hussain was hung. To long has the "secrets" of war kept hidden the absolute monster crimes against human beings. I believe these folks at this website are doing the world a BIG justice by publishing this "secret" stuff, which should be known by everyone. IF THE U.S. GOVERNMENT AND/OR OTHER GOVERNMENTS ARE SO ASHAMED OF THE HAPPENINGS NOW SEEN IN THESE PAPERS, PERHAPS THEY SHOULD CHANGE THEIR WAY OF DOING BUSINESS. Its no wonder the rest of the world doesn't trust our government. The U.S. Government talks with a smile on it's face and a gun in one hand and knife in the other. If your going to be a bully on the world scene then just be a bully! Quit trying to make the world believe your such a nice guy when in fact you are a murdering thug.... Just call it like it is.....

It's time humanity started spending money on making this a better world to live in, not spending trillions on killing other human being.

Just like with the Pentagon papers release by Daniel Elsberg, 40 years from now there will still be the Roy's out there denying that the US did anything wrong even when shown the facts. Its sad that there are still so many people in the US that truely believe that the ends justify the means, that to win in Afghanistan or Vietnam there are going to be "acceptable" numbers of civilian casualties and that the investmant of both lives and treasure are worth "stabalizing" another countries government so that we can purchase cheap resources from them and procur contracts for multi-national corporations.

I think that the old saying that "History is written by the winners" will only stay true as long as there are people like Roy (and most gvmnts) trying to shut up the truth tellers. Would any of you really admit that you would let your soldiers commit horrendous crimes like raping and murdering a 12 year old and her family, or to indescriminatly bomb homes, towns and communities to protect your "freedoms"? Not likely, but if you just sit there with your eyes closed & hands over your ears so as not to see or hear the real cost of war thats exactly what your endorsing. I want to know what the soldiers are doing for my Freedom and would feel far better about supporting the troups if there was alot more transparancy.

If you are willing to sacrifice liberty and knowledge of your government's atrocities for national security, you deserve neither liberty or knowledge. And by the way, push the Caps Lock button on your keyboard again, it's stuck. Then go back to elementary school for a new spelling primer.

I think that there is a balance that should take place between providing information to the public and maintaining confidential files under the premise of National Security. What I believe is happening now is that the government has become so secretive about everything that it makes websites like WikiLeaks so necessary. We have seen that the current news media outlets are not doing their job and only play into extreme views they want to push on the public just to incite emotion. I can't trust any one news organization anymore, not even CNN. There is no honest, factual reporting anymore. It is up to the individual to sort through all this mess and I think WikiLeaks allows that for the public; puting the info out there and letting us make the choice. But yes, they must be responsible about it and truely understand the significance and potentially harmful consequences of that they are doing. As with every journalist, they have to know the power of what they are saying. Let's hope they understand the power of what they are doing.

Might as well throw these people on the pile as well:

      1) The Valerie Plame outers

      2) Anyone who speculates against the dollar

      3) The "experts" who orchestrated the Wall Street / AiG / Fannie Mac Mae mess

Wiki leaks has preformed an act of terrorism by revealing our nations intelligence. This is not acceptable and wiki leaks should be punished through jail time. This is not something to take lightly by doing this they could damage our soldiers moral. America does not like war but knows it is necessary to protect people. As a world leader it is our responsibility to help nations in need.Afghanistan as a whole is better off because of our efforts to eliminate the Taliban. The Taliban is a group of thugs how can people want them to be part of the world community.

Where the secrets start, the republic stops. I heard that as a boy in John Birch meetings. What has happened to the conservative movement that we have become defenders of secrecy? You want secrecy, try the Soviet Union. They knew something about secrecy. Secrecy steals freedom.

Roy et al, please don't speak for this country. So quick to call for imprisonment and executions when in fact your ignorance is the disease. In another time and place you would be goosestepping undesirables to the gas chambers. You are not Americans and you do disservice to our soldiers. You are the hate and intolerance from which wars are spawned. Now off with you. Go outside and pull wings off butterflies. But no more internets for you.

Dude are you serious? I thank God these people leaked that information. That means this country is waking up to the fact that our Government is incredibly corrupt. You are talking like you still think 9 -11 was a terrorist attack. They have proof and text messages from inside the building that day that bombs were going off. Look at the video about the place that hit the Pentagon that day...there was no wreckage. That was no plane. This place is corrupt and the people need to know about it. It's in the medical industry, the drug industry, it's all over the place. And, the more fear they try to convey to people throught the media, lies, and especially acting like they are protecting us – the more of a joke it all is. That said, I sympathize with you and who you know over there defending all of us. God bless them all and I thank them. But make no mistake, leaked information will not bring us or them more or less safety. It only brings the truth, and the truth is hard sometimes. The truth is simple, they want us fearful, dependent, and unempowered. Strength lies in people, not in Governments.
