Officials: Afghan villagers repel insurgents

Kabul, Afghanistan — Villagers in eastern Afghanistan repelled an insurgent attack Tuesday, an incident that left an Afghan civilian and "numerous" Taliban dead, the NATO-led command said.

The incident took place in Ghazni province, where Taliban fighters tried to attack the village of Aalai Shahea. After unsuccessful attempts to overpower the village, they were "met with effective resistance" by its residents and quickly left the scene, NATO's International Security Assistance Force said in a statement.

The event is one in a series of examples of villagers withstanding and repelling insurgent attacks, including the successful defense of a village in the Gizab district in southeast Afghanistan in April that resulted in several insurgent deaths and four arrests, the statement said.

The insurgents traveled from neighboring Uruzgan province to conduct Tuesday's attack on the village, which is largely populated by Afghan security forces and their families, ISAF said.

"Attacking local people in their houses and villages demonstrates how desperate the Taliban have become in their failing operations to terrorize the Afghan people, and today the villagers fought back and won," said Maj. Paul Oliver, a military spokesman.

This is exactly how it should be happening. Until villagers there decide to start protecting themselves from the blood thirsty Taliban loonies, there is no way we will succeed on our own.

I applaud those villagers defending their homes and families against a bunch of thugs, the Taliban and Alqaeda are full of stupid brain washed side blinded men who have been lied to for so long, they really believe that their own God would be happy when they kill, maim, nail bomb humans their own God made. The losers of Taliban and Alqaeda dishonor Allah by hating the other groups of people of this world which Allah also made. THey need to know the truth, too bad they behead anyone who tries to tell them they were lied to by every Iman they know.

@Anabel: Locals in Afghanistan are paid for their support of eh local government or U.S. forces either directly or through funding of projects ( i.e. building a canal, a school, ect...) if they provide information on the Taliban or anti-government forces. Either way, they are paid to do something they should have done for themselves. It is always better to die on feet than live on your knees.

Helicopters filled with pallets of stacks of newly minted 100 US dollar bills for the corrupt Karzai clan and various drug lords and war lords in Afghanistan, No Problem! Money can't buy everything. Read the stories about Afgan troops killing their Nato trainers. Just cause they get paid, don't mean they can be trusted. The ethnic tribal connection still matter in this day and age. If we were ever going to get a handle on this situation, we need to understand these things. Taliban is mainly a Pashtun militia. Not really a surprise if other tribes resist them. That'd just be tribal warfare. It'd be more interesting if the villagers were themselves Pashtun.

If we take what was in the story for fact, this is the way I see it. The village contains many Afghan security forces people and their families. The Insurgents are the enemy of the ASF (at least today). Had the ASF and the other villagers not put up a fight, we'd bee reading a story about how the Insurgents killed everyone they could in an eastern Afghanistan village before Coalition forces could react. It boils down to attackers and defenders.

I do not know why Arabs or Muslims in general do not stand up to terrorists. I mean terrorism kills more Muslims than it does "Westerners". Estimates in Iraq in 2005 said that 250,000 civilians had been killed in the fighting not to mention all the other countries where terrorists blow themselves up in markets, public transportation, and places of business. It just seems crazy that they would not want to end the violence.

To everyone who says they were paid to do this – who cares? A win is a win. If we would have followed the SF model we would have flooded the country with cash and weapons right at the start and our boys would be home by now. It is much more cost effective to hire locals to the fighting. The taliban pay thier fighters around $200 a month. If we piad $400 a month we would mooch the majority of thier forces and still only be paying a fraction of what a GI is paid. Our problem is we think with our balls instead of our brains.

This a good sign. This means that Afgans are becoming more capable of defending themselves without help. There is still a lot of work to do, but this is a sign that we MIGHT be able to pull our combat troops out of Afghanistan sooner or later. Are we really suppossed to get a "warm & fuzzy" feeling that this one incident, from one village, and after 8yrs. is going to change anything? And lets not forget that religion has been, and continues to be, one of the main reasons people go crazy and start killing! The entire Muslim world is suffering because of these non-Muslim, sub-human fanatics, who have perverted their beleifs only to justify their cause.
Wars are an ugly, dehumanizing business. Innocents are ALWAYS victims or causalities. This is NO justification for anyone who would put bombs on men, women & children, from their own country, to live on this planet!

Those of you that think Jesus will make your sins go away are Crazy!!! Because only GOD can do that... Because we are all GODS Children!!!

The only difference between the Catholic and Muslin is how they are going about doing it!!! The Muslin by force and the Catholic through Politics...

That is what I have against all Religions but Budda... They break GODS Law and are forgiven after doing it!!! I try my hardest to live by the 10 commandments... It isn't easy but at least I try!!! I believe it is up to God who is right and who is wrong... So do what you want but don't expect GOD to forgive you just because Your Religion says you are excused from it!!!

This needs to continue, educate the female and male children and they also need to teach the women the same combat skills including hand to hand to put them on a more even footing with males who think of them as property that should not be educated and respected.
