Jirga delegates: Taliban prisoners should be freed

Delegates to a peace conference in Afghanistan asked Friday that Taliban prisoners be freed from Afghan and international detention centers. They also urged the Taliban to cut its ties with al Qaeda.

The suggestions are among 200 that delegates to the conference, or jirga, made to authorities.

The delegates also recommended that names of all Taliban members be removed from blacklists maintained by the United States and United Nations. Those lists contain the names of suspected militants that U.S. authorities and their allies would like to arrest.

The delegates called for the release of any prisoners currently being held for giving faulty information to NATO forces, and they urged international forces to stop searches of private homes without adequate reason. They also advised U.S.-led forces to accelerate their training of the Afghan military in advance of the anticipated handover of security responsibilities.

At the same time, they called for the establishment of a peace council comprised of various representatives of provincial councils as well as different tribal leaders and religious scholars. The council, they said, should create a committee to help facilitate the release and reintegration of prisoners.

The delegates also condemned the recent Israeli raid on a flotilla attempting to break through Israel's Gaza blockade.

The recommendations follow several days of meetings involving delegates from around Afghanistan.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai planned the peace gathering with tribal leaders to discuss a reintegration plan for Taliban members who renounce violence and lay down their arms.

The Taliban released a press statement a day before the attack, calling the peace meeting a "foreign scripted peace jirga."

Suspected militants fired rockets, detonated explosives and engaged in an intense gun battle with security forces Wednesday as Karzai spoke at the peace meeting nearby.

The fact is that president Karzai does not have the capabilities and resources to lead the country in such critical situation. Abdullah Abdullah also relates to a minority criminal group and does not have support of majority of Afghans. To end the war it is highly necessary to bring a transparent government into power and end the rule of corrup and incapable Karzai. International communtiy can achieve their goal including elimination of terrorism from Afghanistan by supporting a real national army not the existing one which is dominated by a group called Jamiati Islami.

NO WAY you let these guys out. When the Taliban quits fighting so will the USA. We don't want to be there but that is where all this started. Just ask Pakistan. They cut a deal w/ the Taliban and then the Taliban started taking more ground so Pakistan had to take it back.

You can't cut deals w/ these people. They only understabd DEFEAT.

I believe after the Jirga delgates requested all of this they went back to their caves where their Taliban masters congratulated them. What a crock of crap.

Releasing prisoners during a time of war is probably one of the dumbest ideas I've ever heard concerning this war. How many have been released from Guantanamo only to arrive back on the battlefield to fight us? The Taliban's number 2 (after Baradur was captured) was A FORMER GUANTANAMO DETAINEE. So letting all of them go will result in a huge increase in violence.

The only way to rid them of Taliban ideology is to publicly behead them.

I completely agree Alli. Not just because I've lost close friends in Afghanistan. But, because that is the culture that this nation has live by for centuries. For years, they have lived by the code that if you do something wrong, you get punished. Steal something, lose a hand. Kill somebody, lose your head. And the public showing of punishment is a message to all. And that's how these people work. If a boy sees his father beheaded for murdering somebody else, my bet is he's prob never going to kill unless he absolutely has to. It's cold and brutal, but it's the truth. If we want people to stop following the Taliban, we have to show them that they are going to die if they do follow the Taliban.

The Karzai government should establish some sort of program to re-integrate the Taliban back into the society-they should not be freed until they are rid of the Taliban ideology. There is a huge divide between the Taliban Muslims and the rest of the Muslims in other countries. Islam does not prohibit(in fact encourages) girls from getting an education as well as killing is not allowed. The Karzai administration should be responsible for eliminating these wrong ideas. Their country should be investing in education of these poor folks who can't even read or write and are fed mental garbage. Imagine folks who cant even feed their children and are forced to get rid of them by giving them to the Taliban. Obviously these Jirga members are smoking too much of their countries favorite agriculture product. Or maybe they have been infiltrated.

I have a theory regarding the taliban. They originally came from Africa/ Middle east probably growing the same drugs which led to desertification. Now they are doing the same in Afghanistan. In a thousand years it will all be desert and nice source of oil. The taliban have direct knowledge of this and know it will take centuries of bloodspilling to make more oil.

In Land Where Evil Dies an Endless Death shadows roam: I hope you sleep well Jirga and Taleban, your days are numbered.

There is no reason to negotiate with them. These delegates are related to some of these Taliban. They picked this fight and never expected to be defeated but that's inevetable.

What nut case would even consider these requests? How many were released from Gitmo and went back to their insane activities? The Taliban have nothing to offer at a negotiation table. They are gradually being eliminated and that's a good thing. These people could never reintigrate with a normal population.
