Suspected U.S. drones kill 14 militants

Islamabad, Pakistan — At least 14 militants were killed and several others injured Tuesday when five suspected U.S. drones fired missiles in Pakistan's tribal region, officials said.

The suspected drones fired 18 missiles at two vehicles and several compounds, according to officials.

Targets pounded are believed to be used by militants in the Data Khel area in North Waziristan, one of seven districts bordering Afghanistan.

Officials said the missiles were fired about 10 to 15 minutes apart.

The local administration official and an intelligence official asked not to be named because they are not authorized to speak to the media.

The U.S. military routinely offers no comment on reported drone attacks. However, it is the only country operating in the region known to have the ability to launch missiles from drones, which are controlled remotely.

In other violence in Pakistan's tribal region along the Afghan border, nine Pakistani soldiers and 37 militants were killed Monday during a fierce battle, officials told CNN.

Two military officials said security forces took on more than 100 militants after the security forces were ambushed by rockets and heavy firearms in Daburi, a village in Orakzai Agency, one of the seven districts in Pakistan's tribal region.

Officials said a dozen militants and five soldiers were wounded in the clash.

The Pakistani military launched operations in Orakzai beginning in mid-March to root out militants who had taken refuge there after an offensive in South Waziristan.

The officials asked to not be identified because they were not authorized to speak to the news media.

Journalist Nasir Dawar and Nasir Habib contributed to this report.

Daniel-2 you are insane! The Taliban are nothing but terrorists and murderers! They terrorize their people into submission as we fight for their freedom and democracy! We've lost many lives to secure their freedom and you do nothing but demoralize our troops!

Daniel-2, are you insane? The Crusades were not noble at all! It was, "Hey let's go slaughter a bunch of arabs because they pray to a different invisible man than we do!" Seriously, where did you learn about the "Noblility" of the Crusades. I am sure there were a few "Noble" warriors, but to say the Crusades were "Noble" is a statement of blatant ignorance to say the very best. I'd say, stop getting your history lessons off Wikipedia.

@Dan in Lafayette,IN.What motivates the Taliban is their belief in Islam, whereas the West is motivated by it's greed. At least back in the Middle Ages, the Crusaders had a noble cause to be in the Middle East, whereas today we do not.Enough said.

As someone has already mentioned... you have to fight fire with fire. We're never going to come close to winning this war if we let the terrorist leaders sit in Pakistan and we do nothing about it. This is a war about leaders. If we can successfully cut the head off of the snake, the body (lower level fighters) will give up. We have to take out the most radicalized Islamic terrorists in their backyard (Most are in North Wazieristan)

@Onesmallvoice. I am not sure if you are confusing administrations "...spend any amount of our hard earned tax money...". Pretty sure we are spending more than ever before on social programs and bail-outs for executives. Yes, we are spending money on the wars to free oppressed people. I would argue this is better than some executive refilling his martini on his yacht with my tax's. Finally, the right is speaking. We are just so used to the noise from the left it has become white noise....

@robert.The problem is that Barack Obama threw in with the right-wing thugs in Washington once he assumed the presidency. And these thugs still dictate our foreign policy. And don't count on these anti-intellectual Tea Partiers to change anything as they love these obscene wars and are willing to spend any amount of our hard earned tax money to fight them. With all the ignorance and fanaticism out there, these Tea Partiers are bound to win bigtime.

you communist peace protesters were never against the only protested the war cause you were against Bush....

Obama is by far the worst prezident this country has ever had...the democratic party is the communist party..Obama and his fellow dem@pukes attempted the communist take over of America and failed...

Thank you Ian for your service and may God be with you as you fight the good fight for freedom and democracy so the people there don't have to live in fear of their rulers and the children can have a good education and not be brainwashed into a terrorist. Remember what Jesus said about those who turn his children away from Him, it would be better for him to tie a milestone around his neck and thrown into the sea!

After reading what Ron and Dan are saying I think you are both right in some way however, sometime the best way is to figth fire with fire. These radical dont care wwho they kill, they are killing muslim and non muslim alike. The bible say if you take one's life you should pay with your own. We should also pray for peace and do whatever we can to make peace, but if the enemy do not want peace we have to continue doing what we are doing. I'm serving in the US Military currently and I dont want "WAR".

Ron I happen to be an infidel who believes in Jesus, democracy and freedom all of which these Islamic radicals are against and would kill in the name of their god Allah. And I will be first in line after Our Lord and savior's (Jesus') 1000 year reign to put these devilish people in their place for eternity!

Listen, This war is not taking place because of "the expansion of the west" or because of "strategic position in the middle east". It is because of events that took place on Spet 11 2001. Or did you all forget about that day? I haven't.

@Onebigvoice.The war in the Middle East is against Islam and for the expansion of the West. While Afghanistan itself has few resources,it occupies a strategic position in the Middle East as does Iraq, because in between them lies Iran.

Lets call it like it is...a war against extremist islam. These are not moderate muslims. They are much different, carry suicide vests and kill innocent people. The reason the extremist islamics want America to fail is our freedom of religion and Christian majority. So killing with drones reduces risk to our Soldiers. Who they kill is determined by our National Strategy. Let me guess that Onesmallvoice has not served the country in any official capacity? You can consider me "right wing nutjobs" and I have served the country in official capacity. Many of my friends also. I don't expect an answer because you don't want to.

Hey Curtis, If I thought that these Islamic radicals wanted peace I would pray that they stop their INSANE killings and understand what Jesus came for. I am not promoting the death of these radicals in Jesus' name but in the name of mankind! These people are wild animals and need to be treated as such!

    Hey, Dan in Lafayette,
Most of us think of war operations as a (sometimes) necessary security measure, not a chrusade for Jesus. Let's leave the crazy "kill in the name of God" rhetoric to the cave-dwellers, shall we?
Please keep God in your heart and away from my government - and nowhere NEAR our military operations. I'm pretty sure Jesus wouldn't be real happy about the incessant bloodshed that goes on all over the world today no matter how you slice it.
Here's an idea: let's pray for peace!

Way to go Obama send those drones out in numbers and kill as many of these militants as possible. Keep them flying or will have generations of Islamic radicals killing and planning attacks against the west or anybody who oppose their destructive and deadly ideology. When the Son of God came he offered his life for the sinner to be forgiven and those who believe will be saved and those who maim or kill the sinner will be held responsible and burn in hell forever! For those who do not believe in Jesus as their savior they will have to endure the great tribulation when the world is ruled by the anti-Christ which Islam is looking more and more like the wolves in sheep's clothing as Jesus said!
