Analysis: The last 100 yards to bin Laden

The fact that Attorney General Eric Holder believes that Osama bin Laden will not be found alive is not surprising to those I speak to in the national security community.

Senior military and intelligence officials have said to me over the years they don't really expect to get bin Laden alive.

The feeling is either he has a poison pill such as cyanide that he would take if cornered, a weapon on his person at all times to shoot himself, or his immediate security personnel - who are with him at all times - have taken a vow to shoot and kill him before he is taken.

Holder went on to say as much after his initial comment Tuesday.

"The chances he'll be captured alive are infinitesimal. He'll be killed by our people or his own people so he's not captured by us," Holder told Congress.

This has been a long-standing view by almost everyone I have spoken to, that generally the "last 100 yards to bin Laden" would be the toughest because of this scenario.

It was back in 2001, one week after September 11, that I asked then-President George W. Bush about catching bin Laden. His answer became iconic.

"I want justice," Bush said. "And there's an old poster out West… I recall, that said, 'Wanted, Dead or Alive.'"

But since then, almost everyone I talked with said the former option was the most likely. It has generally come to be understood it will not be alive.

Take a few minutes and search google and consider the evidence. From what I've gathered, Osama bin laden has been dead since 2001. Of course the terrorist community and the U.S. Gov't both have something in common.. they want everyone to believe Osama still lives.

The whole Western World is entrapped in the so called "The War on Terror" after 9/11 and then we brought so many countries like Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan Yemen into a war zone. Iraq which was by and large a peaceful, educated, secular and oil rich country is doomed now and is burning in sectarian clashes amongst Shias, Sunnis and Kurds. Because of the wrong policy of Bush we created another Iran in the Midle East because it is Iran which is in the win win position after Iraq Attack by USA. Iran's political influence and oil wealth has gone much higher after Iraq invasion. Afghanistan is another quagmire for USA, after eight long years of USA presence in Afghanistan USA could not achieve any thing except a huge financial expenses and a bad name for having a Gitmo's and Abu GhareebTorture Policy. I don't know how far this Bin Laden's havoc and fear psychosis will take USA and when USA is going to end this "War Psychosis" and will bring an atmosphere of peace to the world specially USA is going to crack financially and it needs to limit its expenditures.

BTW, they say the Russians did find Hitler, out back in a shallow grave after his remains had been burned. Years and years later they were released for public inspection and an analysis of his teeth gave inspectors reason to think it was him.

Human's make all the plans but only God makes them happen. If it is God's will th at Bin Ladden will be caught alive and used to command his blind followers to lay down thier arms before being brought to justice, so be it. If he had that control ove r his life would have killed him self already. Remember Sadam Hussien, He had a pistol on him when he was caught and why did he not use it. How stronger or braver is Bin Laden over Sadam. If is it God's will, he will be caught alive. I beilieve he will be caught alive and some time this year God willing.

    Hilarious Hollywood style melodrama.
UBL was enabled by the CIA. He created Al Qaeda based on his CIA training. He enabled his people to plan and execute the 911 events. You seriously believe anyone in the US intelligence community actually wants to capture him?
It's time to end the nonsense and get on with things.

This man knows that getting captured and rotting in an american cell for the rest of his natural life will destroy the basis for his whole fight. If he dies in battle he is a martyr for his cause. The valient leader who gave it all. But if we could get him alive in some lucky chance and manage to find a way to prison him, which we must, then we win. His organazation loses initiative.

I have no doubt that Bin Laden is in Iran being shielded from us by the mullah’s as the Iranian leadership laughs at us as they did after murdering over two hundred of our beloved Marine’s in Lebanon and leveling our embassy there as well. Iran has always run circles around us laughing the laugh of knowing we will never retaliate against them because we just do not get it. Where do you think the IED’s used to kill our trooped came from and where pioneered by?? They are still killing are troops but we do not get it. In their eyes, at least we have continuity as will never rock the Iranian boat as they merely pursue nukes to use. What happened to us?? We used to be the home of the brave not the home of the professional victim. Our military would protect us if their irrational restrictions were removed as in WWII.

What's with this "100 yards" stuff? A .50 calibre sniper rifle has an effective range of about 1/2 mile. One round to the torso and his bodyguards will be picking up body limbs from the four compass points and the gene pool will be one step closer to being cleaned up.

I think Bin laden is too chicken to kill himself. He has no problem strapping bombs onto women and children or killing innocents but I don't think he could do the same to himself, he hasn't got the suicide bug because he isn't poor and helpless like the uneducated "soldiers" he has brainwashed with his perverted brand of Islam. Besides all that, Muslims who don't live in subjugated fear of these religious zealots and their brand of "justice" realize that the Bin Laden's interpretation of Islam is not what being Muslim is all about.

We are aggressive and violent at heart and it is amazing that a country like ours has had such little effect on the world while holding such a large club. Pacifism will never rule this earth; it can only be dominated by others. I am not promoting war or aggression, I am just pointing out the obvious historical facts. LIKE IT OR NOT!

    John Doe!

The Saudi's were actually upset with Bin Laden for doing 911.
(He admitted and celebrated on tape all of you troofers!)
The Saudis have infiltrated the US from academia all the way up to the Justice and State departments. Along with the Muslim Brotherhood, it's been going on here and in Europe for over 40 years. The West turns a blind eye to it because of it's need for oil.
911 wasn't necessary in the Saudi's eyes because the peaceful sabotage was/is well underway.
    911 blew the roof off.

And for all of you troofers...really! Do you think the "evil" Bush/Rove/Cheney could have pulled that off and kept it a secret? The media leaks secrets to our enemies all the time.
What makes you think that 911 could have been kept under wraps?

Some people are too chicken to do themselves in ine leiu of torture. I agree we will most likely not catch him alive but I would rather he be dead anyway. If he lives then he will get a court hearing and consume more funds (although it is pennies compared to the amount spent finding him).

Since when has a terrorist been the standard for defining our identity as a country? Do we become a country that violates basic human rights and commits extrajudicial killings simply because our enemies behave in such a manner? Does our country believe in raping rapists? Do we appoint sexual deviants to molest the children of child molesters? Does our thirst for revenge and blood distort the principles and ideals on which this country was founded?
Be careful for what you ask America. The seeds you sow today to capture a cave-dwelling terrorist, may one day sprout to smother the freedoms and liberties taken for granted in all homes in main street America.

9\11 was a tragedy, but it was also a flash in the pan. Al Qaeda is not as weel rganized nor as powerfull as the "governments of the free world" want you to believe. If they were as powerfull and as well funded and as well organized as our "intelligence community" leads us to believe, why not hit a major city every 3-4 months? Nothing as big as 9\11, but little car bombs, chlorine gas attacks and maybe a randome "martyrdom shooting" ? think of the terror and mayhem that they could generate if a lone terrorist walked into a mall as a not-so-smart bomb! They are a weak and poorly organized bunch of illiterate and uneducated individuals who have perverted the words of Allah and exorcised all that is good from their version of the Quran.

Bin Laden is a patron saint to Islam ,Arabs and Muslim fundamentalist throughout the world. Osama is the most important propaganda tool to the US government who ever lived and has been guarded like fort knox by the CIA and allowed to remain free at all cost. Your Democratic savior is in charge now so get off of your moronic theories that the Bush administrations are still running the show. Bin Laden may have been in charge at some point but he is no specter, he is real and dead or alive he is still a strong influence on the extremists out there who are looking for an excuse to kill or die for a cause. If the people of all religions would suck it up and live by the "golden rule" which the Koran and Bible both teach maybe we could get past all the killing and start to make things just a little better. Would it be nice to spend Trillions of dollars on taking care of people rather than blowing them up? That is both sides not just the U.S. and its buddies but the Islamic radicals money also.

We are afraid of trying bin Laden here in the US if he's ever found. We are afraid of trying Guantanamo Bay recruits (as they were "recruited" into that military camp) because we realise that our laws are imperfect and could allow them to be set free.

There goes my motivation to live because these people are telling me our laws are imperfect.

I hear there is a movement to have lawyers who have defended terrorists are being threatened with disbarment. There goes my motivation again. Because my impression was that this country mandates that a person is given the utmost effort of justice by trial. Since there is evidence that such efforts would result in the release of criminals and terrorists – we are all doomed. Our laws cannot protect us and yet all of us are sitting idly by playing computer games and watching the stock market fall and buying cheap goods from China instead of having village and town meetings frequently to get rid of the two dominant political parties.

I call for an Apple-Cider party to right these wrongs – because during the Boston Tea Party, the American rebels threw away all the tea (loved by the British) overboard into the bay but took home all the barrels of apple cider (loved by the Americans then). It should have been called the Boston Apple Cider party.

Since 9-11 the world is broken, a fracture in our society that grew to an earthquake. At the root are religious differences and long standing wars from the before the Ottoman empire to the present Israeli Palestinian conflict. Religion in general has become fanatical on both sides. Those willing to die in the name of their God, and those willing to kill in the name of their God. The zealous beliefs border on the insane. Drug addicts are addicted to the rush, so too are the extreme beliefs an ungodly actions on both sides. Question a believer of any religion and you get vilified, or worse. When religion saves the lives of their enemies only then will we have peace. Until then we will be manipulated by the so called religious leaders who's tirades lead to death on both sides, and not to a better world.

Conspiracy is becoming the hallmark of American politics, and this is hurting the whole world.

If we catch bin Laden alive then I think we should let him go ... after we tell everyone in this country when and where. There wouldn't be enough of him left after three minutes to fill a shot glass.

Hard to scare the American Public with a dead terrorist. It fit the Bush agenda to have bin Laden alive and out there to help pass their wire tap, bank records, mail opening laws. Those laws had NOTHING to do with terrorism, and everything to do with finding out who financed the Democrats, who they talked to, e-mailed, what they bought, where they went, etc.

Do you think the CIA will admit bin Laden died years ago and stop circulating those old movies of him? In some of the later ones he apparently gets younger.

Ignorance runs amok... I truly hope this isn't all our intelligence community can come up with. If so... no wonder why they haven't caught/killed him. Ingenuity and imagination seems to be a description that's not attached to articles and discussions regarding internation terrorism.

There are thousands of scenarios that are available to Bin Laden besides the obvious above. What's the worst case scenario that no one is mentioning? If Bin Laden is actually still out there... what about the day he finally decides to martyr himself and he commits suicide with a bomb at a very strategic place? I'm sure there's going to be enough video footage for propaganda to last decades for producing little Bin Laden idols.

It is quite dubious that bin Laden is even alive since he had a severe case of nephritis back in 2001.The right-wing thugs in Washington still need him to scare the American public into a right-wing frenzy.

I am wondering if Robert read the same news item I did. Nowhere does it mention Miranda rights, the ACLU, Khalid Sheik Mohammad, or Hollywood. If I, as a liberal, employed similar tactics, I could certainly make self-serving cracks about conservative lemmings, foaming-at-the-mouth Faux News, and the stupidity of invading Iraq under false pretences when we already had a real war and a real enemy in Afghanistan.

However, I can say I agree with Robert that it would be easier if Bin Laden were killed rather than captured. But if he is captured, he will get his fair trial. Because in this country, that's what we do - we live by our principles. We don't say one thing and then do another because it's more convenient.

Ironically, the smartest thing Bin Laden could do right now is turn himself in without a fight at a very public place in Belgium or France. He'd get free medical care, free meals, prayer time, and put the western world into a legal mess that would take at least a decade to sort out. Then once the trial started the prosecution would have to actually prove he had committed a crime while not even standing in the same hemisphere as where the crime was committed.

In Islamic laws, suicide is prohibited. I know that there have been many muslim suicide bombings in the past but killing self to avoid capture is a different story. So, I really doubt that Osama bin laden would kill himself to avoid getting captured.

ACLU and Hollywood liberals?...No,the right wing fanatics believe we should commit 100k troops while losing possibly half to casualties trying to capture him and bring him to Gitmo for waterboarding and interrogation techniques while Dick Cheney says"see how it works" and GWB can finally say "mission accomplished".Then we can somehow justify the 4,000+ needless deaths in Iraq. This country was either in denial or in a coma for the previous 8 years prior to the current administration.I guess Osama was in Iraq all along and that's why we invaded that country.

But who is her really? I believe he works for the CIA in Black Opts. Bush/Cheeney/Rove (the unholy trinity) needed him to scare the bejesus out of the American people so they could do their dirty work unmolested. Cheeney was the main driving force since he wanted lucrative military contracts for his old buds Haliburton, and they in return would generously reward him. One really has no idea what these monsters were all about. May they roast in hell for all eternity!

Yes I do agree with the general opinion on what will happen if and when Bin laden is cornered. He will not be taken alive, but in retrospec to what has been stated in the above opinions, I would dare say that to prevent him from becoming anymore of an icon/martyr then he already has been made, the death should be silent and quick so as not to be over glorified or stated by his followers. Just something to mull over... May he rot in hell.

You all make valid points but I believe Bin Ladens activities have aroused global awareness of terrorist activities. The 9/11 attacks are minimalistic compared to what could have been done with the level of terrorist awareness back then.

I don't condone what Bin Laden did, but on the other hand if it wasn't Bin Laden it could have been someone worse who could have done worse. Much like mass suicides perhaps Bin Laden meant to teach us all something.

I always figured someone has his derringer handy for when that time comes. He's too much of a coward for him to actually put up a fight. I he gets cornered he'll probably simply take as many people with him as he can. My only hope is we get the opportunity to drop a bunker buster on him..and take as many of his friends with him as possible. Sick of hearing about Bin Ladin...let the rocks have him....he's condemned to the underground already..leave him there..and roll the rock into place across the door..or collapse it..either way..problem solved. And I swear if he gets away again because "we wait for for the exact right moment" I am going to scream.

Hitler did not allow himself to be captured alive, and neither do I expect Bin Laden to be, so any talk of reading the "Miranda Rights" to him is entirely of theoretical interests only.

That said, suppose we do find Bin Laden, I do hope that rather than capture him alive and have to deal with the political consequences, he is killed on the battlefield. There is a circus developing around KSM now. No doubt, the ACLU and Hollywood liberals will be lining up to defend him. Let's not give Bin Laden and Co. a soapbox to air their sick propaganda, because that's precisely why they perpetrated 9/11 in the first place, so the world is forced to sit up and listen to them – that's always the motive for terrorists. Therefore, the best thing we can do for the victims of 9/11 is to silence their killers and erase memories of them forever and not letting them get their way, which is to propagandize.
