Whatever happened to bin Laden?

Osama bin Laden - remember him? Where is he, and is the U.S. getting closer to killing or capturing him?

Those are the questions hovering over several recent developments in the Afghanistan war: the capture of Afghan Taliban military leader Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar,  the killing of two key Taliban commanders  and an increase in drone attacks.

But several authorities on the eight-year Afghanistan war say no one should expect to see bin Laden in handcuffs anytime soon.

“No, I don’t think we’re getting any closer,” says Stephen Tanner, author of “Afghanistan: A Military History from Alexander the Great to the War against the Taliban."

Tanner says the ISI, Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence Agency, knows where bin Laden is hiding, but is not ready to say.

“We got to make a deal with Pakistan because I’m convinced that he’s [bin Laden] protected by the ISI,” Tanner says.

Tanner says that rogue elements within the ISI - if not the Pakistani government - may be using bin Laden as a “trump card” to exert leverage over the United States. Tanner says that Pakistani leaders are concerned that the U.S. will draw closer to India, Pakistan’s chief rival.

Flashing the bin Laden trump card will insure that the U.S. will continue to send aid to Pakistan because it considers it a bulwark against radical Islam, Tanner says. Without the bin Laden trump card, though, Pakistan would be in danger of being abandoned by the U.S., Tanner says.

“I just think it’s impossible after all this time to not know where he is. The ISI knows what’s going on in its own country,” Tanner says. “We’re talking about a 6-foot-4-inch Arab with a coterie of bodyguards.”

Even if the U.S. draws a bead on bin Laden, he won’t be captured alive, says Thomas Mockatis, author of, “Osama bin Laden: A Biography.”

Mockatis says bin Laden has bodyguards who are tasked with shooting him if his capture seems imminent.

“Killing bin Laden would not be a good thing,” Mockatis says. “He’s already a hero. Killing bin Laden would just create one more martyr.”

Many in the Arab world wouldn’t even believe reports that bin Laden had been killed, Mockatis says. They would dismiss the news as CIA propaganda and any photographs of bin Laden’s body as fabrications.

Killing bin Laden is important, but what’s more vital is the ongoing U.S. campaign to “constrict” al Qaeda’s operation, Mockatis says. The U.S. has become more successful at taking away al Qaeda’s safe havens, their ability to move agents and finance operations around the globe.

“It’s a grinding down process, the way you deal with organized crime,” Mockatis says. “You constantly keep the pressure on.”

That pressure may have led to several purported bin Laden sightings, says Ivan Kenneally, an assistant professor at Rochester Institute of Technology in New York who teaches courses on American foreign policy and war and the state.

Some of those alleged sightings have placed bin Laden in Chitral, Pakistan, the northwest region of the country. One bin Laden tip from last fall was credible enough that the U.S. military and Pakistani special forces cordoned off  an area and kept it under 24-hour surveillance by drones, Kenneally says.

“There has been more general information that bin Laden is moving about North Waziristan, complicating his detection by constantly moving back and forth over the border between Afghanistan and Pakistan,” Kenneally says.

Finding bin Laden might not come down to super-sleuthing or aggressive military action, says William Martel, associate professor of international security studies at Tufts University’s Fletcher School in Massachusetts.

“You need a healthy dose of luck to actually produce the capture of someone like that who doesn’t want to be captured,” says Martel, also author of “Victory in War: Foundations of Modern Military Policy.”

Martel, like others interviewed for this blog post, says that bin Laden is probably still alive.

It may actually be better if bin Laden isn’t captured, Martel says. The debate over handling bin Laden in captivity would be explosive.

“Do we read him his rights; do we run him through a military tribunal or civilian courts?” Martel says. “Capturing him would pose more problems than not.”

Bin Laden....America is becoming weak. We are being intentionally weakened by dreamers that push these unrealistic ideals into policies. We are like the big heavy-set kid on the playground that smaller children pick on...the one who could easily swat these kids like bugs if he wished...but instead was brutally picked on, abused, and taunted every day, responding only with tears and whining, or pleading...if most of us witnessed this, we would be outraged, and think to ourselves," come on! defend yourself! You're bigger and stronger! You don't have to suffer that kind of treatment! At least make them stop kicking you!" We are becoming that kid on a global scale. Do we think our ability to openly criticize our government without being beheaded or shot for it, or being sentenced to having our oldest daughter gang-raped by a council of village elders (taliban, shariah court) comes without cost and effort? Are these terrorists worried about our rights, comfort, self-esteem, and peace of mind like we worry about theirs? No. They want to kill us, and our children, in the most gruesome and spectacular ways possible. The people that do the dirty job of keeping us safe from these evil monsters and barbarians should have our deep gratitude, not our anger, scorn, and suspicion. They are paid far less than accountants, lawyers, actors, athletes, or musicians...but are any of those professions as critical to your survival as the people protecting you from the Saddam Husseins, the Pol Pots, the Stalins, The hitlers, the bin Ladens? Wake up!

    Is information needed?
Or is this just a poll about interest in the subject?

The truth is, if you admit to seeing OBL after 9/11, you will be ridiculed, arrested, or eliminated.

It used to be a policy when dealing with a True Believer, rather than creating a Martyr by murder, all that is of importance to the True Believer is systematically destroyed until the True Believer's will to continue with their cause is undermined.

That hasn't happened in this case, because Osama Bin Laden is protected.

Please...all this discussion about Bin Laden is pointless. As soon as this country embraces hydrogen power and discards all oil driven technologies WE ARE OUT OF THE MIDDLE EAST FOR GOOD!

Oil is the only trump card the middle east has over the U.S., and once we transition to hydrogen power, we will have no political or economic use for the heat of the middle east. They can squabble amongst themselves, kill each other, and be as disconcerted as they wish towards each other. WE WON'T GIVE A DAMM!

You need to know that "Muslim" is not the same as "terrorist." In fact, the overwhelming majority of Muslims are not terrorists, nor do they support terrorism. If you knew your history better, you'd know that our religions stem from the same family of beliefs. Also, "murderist" is not a word.

Bin Laden had nothing to do with 9-11. We have been sold a bill of goods from the power elite and they have been laughing at us.

One of the scenarios must be true.

1- He is dead and has been for some time now, but it wont be revealed anytime soon, because revealing his death would definitely cripple the recruiting and all that terrorist brainwashing. Also, having him alive, allows the US to continue their 'War on Terror' movie, using american tax payer dollars to buy more tanks and make all the companies that support the military filthy rich

2- He is really hiding in some cave in a brilliant underground pathway structure, and the US are truely using all their resources to capture him, meaning he should be captured/killed at some point.

3- He is chillin with the boys at the whitehouse laughing at all of us for believing their hollywood movie lies for years.

I am middle eastern, and a muslim. Osama should be captured and dealt with. We are in 2010 now, i think its about time the whole world stops looking at muslims in a racist way wherever they are. Forget the 72 virgins, forget all that mumbo jumbo, islam doesnt give any human being the right to take the life of another human being in cold blood. Islam is more than that, its peaceful, forgiving and non-violent.

I, for one, firmly believe that a more hardball approach is needed. The USA should simply tell Pakistan to hand over Osama bin Laden or be treated as a terrorist state. To sweeten the deal, an aid package could be added if Pakistan complies. Otherwise we could start training our own Pakistan-grown assassination cells to infiltrate bin Laden's cadre.

That being said, I also don't believe Osama to be as much a threat as he was back in 2001. The al Qaeda terrorist group has been so fragmented in the past decade that even with Osama gone from the picture, there will likely still be attacks for many years to come.

As per recent intelligence intercepts, he is being kept in the military barracks of Rawalpindi. Its where the ISI and Pakistan military chiefs live. Its the most fortified and safest hiding place for Osama & his cohorts.
Just imagine, living hidden in a wild and inhospitable environs of the border areas of Af-Pak, as they make us believe. No human being can survive for 10 years without illness or harm. In which case he would have to move to a big city. But you never heard that.

Since they are living in the plush quarters of Pakistan military HQ, they can plan and threaten, produce videos and audios and still live hidden and happy. Thanks to Pakistan Military. US should further investigator the intelligence intercepts.

Pakistan has been a Rough Nation ( right from the time of it`s birth). They have been living since last 64 years on charity of Western Nations.
Bin Laden & Mullah Omar, just can`t vanish in thin air from their last known places.
The USA will have to bully Pakistan Military to handover both these criminals to the coalition forces immediately and without any delay. Suppose Pakistan does`t deliver, their aid should be stopped, within ONE WEEK`S TIME.
Sometimes, Mr Obama, simple approach can help to find a everlasting solution. Why get innocent soldiers killed for no rime and reason. Pl have mercy on your own people.
If, these Pakistanies can give you all these frontline heads of militants, they surely can deliver Bin Laden & Mullah Omar.

Bin Laden was and always will be (if still alive) a CIA boy. His CIA cover name was "Tim Osman" and he ran the heroin routes for the CIA.

There is no such thing as "Al Qaeda" that's all propaganda to get the war going and get those big defense contracts.

Israel's Mossad along with top American Zionists pulled off 9/11, not Islamists. Israel's goal is to expand all the way to Iraq someday but they need all those areas as free of Arabs and Muslims as possible and is why they got the US to invade and kill as many as they could.

Right now, Israel and Zionism is crying that Iran is their threat. After Iran is bombed they will cry about Russia and then China, LOL! The Zionistas duped the gullible Americans to fight their wars and go broke in the process.

Are we still looking for Osama,do we still beleive Osama was behind 9/11,can the American people not see that if the FBI AND CIA WANTED HIM THEY WOULD HAVE HAD HIM BY NOW?Truth is that he is probably working with the Americans,he is probably living in the States. When America wanted Saddam Hussain, they found him,on the day of Sep 11 2001,where was teh American military to foil the attacks, just dont make any sense to me this whole business,8 years later American troops are still in Afghanistan, why? As a beleiver of the holy QURAAN,the truth will be shown to the world and the Muslims will triumph,so to answere the question on wheter Osama will be found, ask George W Bush!!

Oh please! Pakistan is the real issue hear. Pressure from the US has helped to get off their butts or was it all the attacks that has been happening throughout the country. To me, Pakistan isn't doing enough or even concerned about Bin-Laden. Pakistan is stubborn Islamic society. At any chance, the Paki gov. would rather go to war against India instead fighting their own problems. Guess what Pakistan, India looks better off, you surrendered to them twice for the past 60 yrs. India basically got your number so just give up!

Will you guys stop with your assumptions? this guy was diabetic in 2001, who knows if he is even alive, I think US is well aware of where he is , and what is his condition, but why should they capture him, that means end of the movie , and some people in US dont want this whole drama to end, every company got hit in recession but not the weapon building companies,

He is not in Pakistan, and the gentleman who said Chitral, do you even know about Chitral? he cannot go there, that place is dominated by Greeks (Descendants of Alexander), they still follow and practice Greek mythology , there is no way he can be there,, somebody talked about Kashmir, watch you mouth, those are freedom fighters fighting for their occupied land

the thing is that this guy is dead and US is just playing along

    2 options.
    1. He's dead and it's not been made public for propaganda reasons. Propaganda goes both ways, remember that.
    2. He is alive. We know where he is. Let's not be naive.

Bin Laden died in 2001 or 2002. But the he is still a threat to the USA because, like Jesus Christ, he has arose from the dead to come back and fight for the Afghan people.

The comments “Whatever happened to bin Laden” indicate a high level of public enthusiasm and interest toward the problem of settling score with the leader of al-Qaeda. The CNN has a real chance to launch a public “Catch bin Laden” project.
The idea is simple: use the power of Internet to enhance, exchange and share leads and relevant information in an open system. The project can be viewed as a non-violent means to keep bin Laden on the run by mobilizing eyes and ears in the probable locations where he is hiding, and thereby increase his risk of exposure. Bin Laden will quickly learn about our effort.
We need (1) to narrow topic to “Where is bin Laden?”; (2) include participants from the AfPak region and neighboring Central-Asian countries; and (3) launch the search for bin Laden starting with his most probable location area, which is the central part of Tajikistan.
There are serious reasons to suggest that bin iLaden is hiding in sanctuaries in the Tajikistan-Kyrgyzstan border area, which were created in the late 1990s by the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan.
I would be happy to share other results of my research and professional studies.

Osama was murdered by Omar Sheikh. Benezir Bhutto leaked this to the BBC (its right in front of your faces) and then Bhutto herself was assassinated in pakistan several weeks following.

The fact that US media doesn't even consider the possibility that Osama has been killed is very telling.

Americans WANT to believe Osama is alive. fact is he's dead, and America didn't kill him so we want to believe the big bad wolf is still out there for us to capture or kill for ourselves.

    It's actually quite sick, really.

we blame bin laden for 9/11 he wasnt flying the planes the people who killed our people died with them. it is said he mastered minded the plan but did he as has been said repeatedly here bush was at breakfast with bin ladens family that fatefull morning and then they were flew out of the country so i am inclined to believe we had a governmental conspiracy here. also bush led us to believe we had to stop sadam husein and we did but are we still in iraq yes we are. how long did it take us to get out of panama, or vietnam? war is big bucks for big businesses and governmental contracts for their friends and families. we need to solve our own energy problems instead of trying to strong arm rob or force into indebtedness other countries to supply our oil and gas needs lets take some of that military money for defense and invest it in long term us based energy solutions here at home. Bring our men home and let them serve our country by helping to solve this energy crunch we are in instead of dying in a fabricated war based on deceit and lies and a bunch of egotistical fools in washington.

It's highly unlikely that Pakistan doesn't know where he is, or at the very least, who is protecting him. They probably don't know the exact location(s) because it probably varies daily. If you look at the geography of the area(s) where he is hiding, it is not surprising that knowledge of his exact locations are unlikely.

But that doesn't mean that Pakistan can't find him. It just means they either don't want to...or are not ready. They want more aid from the U.S. If they give him up too soon, they could lose billions. Look for the money. That is almost always where you need to go to find the answers to your questions.

Well, let's see! Binlauden has had a 7 year head start on his get away trip. While the U.S. is off fighting wars in Iraq and watching the working class people lose everything they have, Binlauden is riding off into the sunset. Where was the U.S. laughing our way to the bank with oil drenched hands. Funny how we some how didn't hear much about the war in Afganistan until Obama got into office. I think he's the only one that actually wanted to take the fight where it needed to be. If not, a least, he did manipulate the public with lies to start the war in the first place. Not to mention that's not where the purps were in the first place.

Really why does this fictional character keep coming up every time someone wants to win support for the war in Afghanistan. The last known appearance of the real Bin Laden was in 2003, as he appeared pail, sick and dieing, denying that he nor his cohorts had anything to do with 9-11. But every 9-11 anniversary shows up a bearded character called Bin Laden who never looks anything like the real Bin Laden other than the beard, whereas the real Bin Laden more than likely died in 2003. You cant kill someone whose already dead and is now just a fictional character used to advance pro-war propaganda. The CIA has immortalized Bin Laden as their most important propaganda tool.

NO; to me Bin Laden and Al-Qaeda, is a creation of the UNITED STATES. It is a lie, manipulation to make people,(the public opinion), believe that the wars strategies has changed from, enemy countries, to one terrorist man alone. I myself, don't believe that Bin Laden is a man or exist. I think that this is a war game of the US, to go after the oil world-wide, and obtain control over the world. I heard once, a captain from the US Army saying that the country that could dominate in space, could be able to dominate all other countries...and as I said, the US is not fighting this time against an enemy country, 'cause the enemy can be found in any country, even in the US continental itself. Can you imagine the US fighting against itself???.....Can the US be its own enemy????...'cause terrorists are found everywhere!!!!!. And is there only one man as the worst US enemy, and this powerful nation is not able to capture him, even with all its powerful army and technology????. I just can't believe this. Because in order to dominate the whole world, or all countries all over the world, the United States political, military, and scientists leaders are deviating tax payers money to the war of terrorism and there are so many inocent and ignorant soldiers loosing their lifes, dying ....for nothing, just for a lie and to make more rich, others that are already rich.
