Whatever happened to bin Laden?

Osama bin Laden - remember him? Where is he, and is the U.S. getting closer to killing or capturing him?

Those are the questions hovering over several recent developments in the Afghanistan war: the capture of Afghan Taliban military leader Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar,  the killing of two key Taliban commanders  and an increase in drone attacks.

But several authorities on the eight-year Afghanistan war say no one should expect to see bin Laden in handcuffs anytime soon.

“No, I don’t think we’re getting any closer,” says Stephen Tanner, author of “Afghanistan: A Military History from Alexander the Great to the War against the Taliban."

Tanner says the ISI, Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence Agency, knows where bin Laden is hiding, but is not ready to say.

“We got to make a deal with Pakistan because I’m convinced that he’s [bin Laden] protected by the ISI,” Tanner says.

Tanner says that rogue elements within the ISI - if not the Pakistani government - may be using bin Laden as a “trump card” to exert leverage over the United States. Tanner says that Pakistani leaders are concerned that the U.S. will draw closer to India, Pakistan’s chief rival.

Flashing the bin Laden trump card will insure that the U.S. will continue to send aid to Pakistan because it considers it a bulwark against radical Islam, Tanner says. Without the bin Laden trump card, though, Pakistan would be in danger of being abandoned by the U.S., Tanner says.

“I just think it’s impossible after all this time to not know where he is. The ISI knows what’s going on in its own country,” Tanner says. “We’re talking about a 6-foot-4-inch Arab with a coterie of bodyguards.”

Even if the U.S. draws a bead on bin Laden, he won’t be captured alive, says Thomas Mockatis, author of, “Osama bin Laden: A Biography.”

Mockatis says bin Laden has bodyguards who are tasked with shooting him if his capture seems imminent.

“Killing bin Laden would not be a good thing,” Mockatis says. “He’s already a hero. Killing bin Laden would just create one more martyr.”

Many in the Arab world wouldn’t even believe reports that bin Laden had been killed, Mockatis says. They would dismiss the news as CIA propaganda and any photographs of bin Laden’s body as fabrications.

Killing bin Laden is important, but what’s more vital is the ongoing U.S. campaign to “constrict” al Qaeda’s operation, Mockatis says. The U.S. has become more successful at taking away al Qaeda’s safe havens, their ability to move agents and finance operations around the globe.

“It’s a grinding down process, the way you deal with organized crime,” Mockatis says. “You constantly keep the pressure on.”

That pressure may have led to several purported bin Laden sightings, says Ivan Kenneally, an assistant professor at Rochester Institute of Technology in New York who teaches courses on American foreign policy and war and the state.

Some of those alleged sightings have placed bin Laden in Chitral, Pakistan, the northwest region of the country. One bin Laden tip from last fall was credible enough that the U.S. military and Pakistani special forces cordoned off  an area and kept it under 24-hour surveillance by drones, Kenneally says.

“There has been more general information that bin Laden is moving about North Waziristan, complicating his detection by constantly moving back and forth over the border between Afghanistan and Pakistan,” Kenneally says.

Finding bin Laden might not come down to super-sleuthing or aggressive military action, says William Martel, associate professor of international security studies at Tufts University’s Fletcher School in Massachusetts.

“You need a healthy dose of luck to actually produce the capture of someone like that who doesn’t want to be captured,” says Martel, also author of “Victory in War: Foundations of Modern Military Policy.”

Martel, like others interviewed for this blog post, says that bin Laden is probably still alive.

It may actually be better if bin Laden isn’t captured, Martel says. The debate over handling bin Laden in captivity would be explosive.

“Do we read him his rights; do we run him through a military tribunal or civilian courts?” Martel says. “Capturing him would pose more problems than not.”

He probably is dead, but I have a suspicion that he is still alive. Although, he was known to have quite a few nagging, and serious, health problems.

Either or, if he is still alive, he must be captured and killed. We already have so much intelligence on these Islamist insurgent networks that Bin Laden would be of no use information wise to us. So, poetic justice would ensue.

I propose death by firing squad, with people waving the American flags and drinking wine around his dead body.

I do find it interesting that we could never seem to get any of the leadership or important targets of the Taliban until that double agent killed the seven CIA operatives. Now all of a sudden we are picking them off like flies. CIA had these guys all in their sites a long time, just hoping to pick up a lead on Bin Laden...looks, though, like they decided some revenge is now necessary. Way to go, it is encouraging to see some fruit.

That would be great if his own guards shot him to avoid capture. Then the news lines would read, Bin Laden's guards shoot him to avoid U.S. capture. Not exactly Martyr material. You can't be a martyr if you are killed by your own loyal followers. That is the same reason suicide bombers are not martyrs, cause they just kill themselves. To even remotely be considered as a martyr, the primary ingredient, is you MUST MUST MUST be killed by those opposed to your agenda. Suicide by his own hand or the that of his guards would indicate weakness, and cowardice in the face of his enemies.

One last thing... stop using God to justify humanity's own weaknesses and short comings.

Anyone with half a brain who studies God knows He is perfect – flawless righteous, merciful,
loving, kind, Omnipotent, without the shadow of evil, always good beyond our limited imagination.

Shame on anyone who uses God for his or her own selfish purposes. READ Genesis and then lecture me on His nature. I'm sick and tired of anyone using The Lord to slaughter
    alleged enemies of Islam.

Abraham's first born son Ishmael was blessed by Our Lord, however Issac is the heir of God's promises to Abraham. So, accept it and lets move on ok?

The Taliban are not Muslims, no islamic idelogy says that you go around killing innocent people neither do i believe they are Pakistanis. Anyways, it must be obvious to any sane person by now that all this "War on Terror" that the US is fighting is firstly because of Oil and secondly to strengthen its hold in the region.

Where is Osama Bin Laden? Are you sure his Name is Osama Bin Laden and Not Timothy Osmond. Osama Bin Laden is a CIA Fictional character. How else does a 7ft Saudi Arabian Man on dialysis hide from the American Government for 7 years in caves and mountains, Meanwhile while hiding he has receive treatment from Western Hospitals for his Dialysis. With all that being said we still don't have a trace. There is something terribly wrong with that. The CIA and other world Agencies doesn't want to catch this guy. It gives them a Legitimate Boogeyman. Someone for the world to be afraid of. Osama Bin Laden reflects the story of BigFoot to me. I am almost positive I am not the only American that feels this way. Ever since 9/11 this Country has gone into a downward spiral. This country doesn't operate by the Elect, It operates through the Central Banking System. That's who is Pulling the strings to our Government. As long as we allow the Central Banking System to control our Money and Credit we will always have Terrorism, Government Corruption. I Invite everyone to see a video called "Money Masters" it gives you the History of Money and who controls it.

I am South African, living in Cape Town. Age 62. Still active !
Get the authorities to take a good look down in this Wester Cape Area of South Africa, area for Osama Bin Laden.
I have no proof, but can say, during the early first two years of looking for him, I noticed a very large group of people walking in the Parklands, Tableview area. The men were all dressed in the Afgan style, clothing and the women walked behind them..
The men had their beards and head shaved ! Very odd !
    Kind regards

It doesn't matter if he's dead or not. And if he's dead, it won't make a different since another guy would replace him. This stupid war will never end. It doesn't matter what kind of weapons used on the US arsenal. The US Government is wasting too much money, and wasting too much servicemember's lives. I hate the fact that our government always acts as the world police (911 force). Yet we can't even police our own society and economy.

He may be clean-shaven and in a suit living in New York City for all we know...hmm...wouldn't that be a kick in the head. Perhaps he is the master-mind behind the new Fatwaa by the Islamic Scholar in London condemning terrorism – it could be the new "trojan horse of islam) to continue to fool the international community into believeing that Islam is a peaceful religion and that the God of Islam is really the same God of the Christians and Jews?) hmm...just some thoughts to ponder – thanks for letting me share.

You just had to go after him instead of Saddam Hussein. You made one of the biggest millitary mistake of all time by changing the focus from Afghanistan to Irak, and many men and women from a lots of N.A.T.O. nations have died as a rusult. I think it is about time you wake up and smell that rotten situation you, volountary or not, allowed to get out of hand and turn sour. Our boys will be back in Canada by this day next year, along many other nations. But I think, as a peace lover as I can be, that they shoudn't, because the reason for which we went to war was right, due to the fact that people who attacked or threatened our nations where sheltered by these talibans leaders, but that reason is not gone yet!

If everyody leaves Afghanistan while there is still some regions controlled by the Talibans for examples; rest assure that religious extremists group are going to spread rapidly and that, sooner or later, even with a "democracy" in place, talibans will be back in Kaboul! Then what? We invade them again?

The religious groups that threatens our two country have none but one advantage: Not having an army! They are the people, the largest and poorest part of Afghan's society, looking for a peace they've not had for too long. They are not as much as hidding behind the population as they ARE the population. So according to what I know of war engagements, especially the part about minimizing civilian casualties, the best way to track and kill people who lives amongst their relatives consists of having the best intelligence you can possibly get, and at whatever cost! How much money did you invested Irak? No one can say but you, but what I can tell you for sure is that, if you would have spent all that money on intelligence gathering and analyzing, you would not have to stay another 5-10 years or more in Afghanistan on your own!

N.A.T.O. nations's populations, who mostly saw your Irak war as an unjustified war at least, would be more incline to support a greater effort in Afghanistan if they could see better results to show that the sacrifice they have made where not in vain, something the money wasted on Irak would surely have brought.

I am very aware of what good the United States's foreign policy have brought to the whole world since it became it's superpower but, that time, from where i'm watching, you really got it all wrong!

The ISI is as similar as the reveloutionary guard of Iran and it has the whole country in its mussle of terror, It is ISI creating troubles with bomb blast of Embassies and cross border infiltration between India, Afganistan, The ISI over the years has become so powerfull that the rulling coilation government of Pakistan is unable to do anything as a matter of fact ISI is proud that it is second to none for example MI or CIA or Musad and is trying to let or make believe general population that with out them India would swallow the whole of Pakistan.
Please declare ISI as a terriest organization and the world will see the dark secret of Money Laundering, Drug Smuggling (using army, Navy, and Airforce as a tool) to cross the pure OPIUM worth more than Gold but less in weight. Recent Kidnapping has also been bless by ISI as a matter of fact nothing happens with out ISI involment. Some mysteries won't go away, until they are solved. Bin Laden's is one of them. Moreover, some mysteries are unimportant, like for instance whether Tutankhamun had a bad tooth. Other mysteries, like Bin Laden's need to be solved for the peace in the world! Until solved, mysteries remain mysteries, so I won't speculate whether Bin Laden is living or dead. Some things are obvious. If wounded at Tora Bora, Bin Laden needed to rest and soon. Where would a haunted man go in such case: not to stay at Tora proper, which was "too hot," but at the closest possible cave known to him. Instead of speculating about Tutankhamun's tooth and DNA, the scientists, archeologists and DNA experts, should provide the U.S. with a map of all the caves in a 300 radius from Tora, and also with Bin Laden's DNA, which matches his daughters and sons, and which can easily be found. As far as future Marjah crops, I believe that wheat can be harvested twice in Afghanistan, correct me if I am wrong. This would make it more profitable than poppies. In Poland, for instance, the first weat crop is sown in early winter, before the snow. The snow protects the weat from high freezing temperatures, and the weat is harvested in late Spring. Then another crop is planted and harvested in late autumn, and the plantic cycle resumes. Other than that, why not try the olive trees in Afghanistan, like in the Argentinian Patagonia? These latter questions need to be investigated by experts.

You're all very black and white. Keep your opinion but always keep an open mind otherwise you're blind. First fact, I keep reading "If he was alive, they'd show his video!" Theres two major reasons why this stateme is false. One, you dont need to show a video to make people believe he is alive. As an American, Id need a video and other evidence to show hes alive to ever be sure either way.. But why does he need to prove to America that he's alive? Most the news gets travelled by ear. People in a radical state of mind are not that hard to pursuade by ear. Most of the attacks on American bases, they're from people not to different than the gangs in America. You have your Mob Lords, the small but tight connections bellow him who handle all the dirty work.. then some people who carry out attacks just to try and be recognized by the Mob Lord, make a buck and live. So stop thinking of "terrorism" as some huge corporation bent out to get the United States. Also, whats with all this talk that he's dead, no hes alive. Umm unless any of you have seen or talked to him lately, how are you so sure? Most the theories have certain facts that could lean either way. You all read what other people have stated, there ideas that they themselves fabricated together in there heads to come to a final conclusion. Come out with your own theory, do your own research.

"Flashing the bin Laden trump card will insure that the U.S. will continue to send aid to Pakistan because it considers it a bulwark against radical Islam, Tanner says. Without the bin Laden trump card, though, Pakistan would be in danger of being abandoned by the U.S., Tanner says."

I doubt the ISI has such a trump card up there sleeve. Why are they making more high profile arrests? They could play coy too, instead the US financial incentives to capture is paying off.

He caused 9/11 and is the most wanted man on the face on the plane t and he commands al Qadea. The U.S. Military is very capable of finding bin Laden. He is proably in Yemen, Pakistan or in the Tora Bora Mountans of Afghanistan.

"The Hunt for Bin Laden",...sorry but is that the latest title of yet another Reality TV show to come out of the U.S? Lets face it, he is either under tonnes of Afghanistan dirt in Bora Bora after some very large bomb fell on him or the ISI shot him in the back of the head years ago and disposed of his body. But hell, keeping the spectre of Bin Laden around really keeps the coffers of the US and Pakistan Militray ticking over quite nicely. I would have said Mosad did it, but they were definitely not involved as there were not enough survailance cameras around to make it interesting enough for them.

seriously even if the government did kill/capture him they probably won't release it. why? because then they wouldn't be able to funnel as much money into this "war" (which isn't really a war by the way). then what would our generals and military do without all this tax money? they'd just find someone else to go shoot at.

Such as to compromise with him to resolve problems via negotiation and abandoning voilence forever. It is a very complicated issue, but worthwhile to deliberate.

You are all stupid Americans just like the world thinks you are. Sheik Osama and Doctor Al-Zawarihi keep making video and audio tapes until this day because nobody can get within miles of them with the miles of security ringed around them. They know when any foreigners are within at least 20 miles of them. You obviously don't know how the culture is in that part of the world. There are spotters everywhere from children to women to elderly men and women. Drones are useless in dense forest since they are spotted from tens of miles away. The so called near misses of Al-Zawarihi were just set ups to to if there are any moles planted. When Ayam announces he will be at a certain place it is just to see if a drone attack is launched on the site so that Al Qaeda knows who the informants are. That's why there are so many dead informants showing up.

He will never be found because war is a money making proposition for the FrM's/BGp...! They've been doing for centuries now, as they own almost everything and are now trying to forge ahead with their NWO.

If you take away an aggressor such as Bin Laden how can one justify war and all it's dispicable unjust horrors. Bin Laden should be broght to justice and he will along with the rest of the FrM's & BGpers, when the day of atonement & chastisement comes.

Seems like the U.S has decided to attack the Middle East claiming that the Middle East is attacking, by destroying the twin tower buildings; not news... The Nazis used the same "secret" tactic by attacking Poland back in WW II claiming that Poland attacks. Most of the American people are corrupted. Listen to what wise people say to you; it is not always black or white; open your minds; want to change the world? Change yourselves.
I am very sad to see that kind of attitude from America; humanity's last hope.
Who knows who is behind this? Any black or red fascist; but the problem goes deeper than that, people are just the decoys. Search for the character structure of the middle American to find out what i mean; butchery and murder. Oh by the way... the phenomenon is global.

My advice to Bin Laden (I know that he probably reads this blog, or has friends who do), is that he use his billions to clear his name!

But you never find the 'top guy' until they decide it's 'politically time' to capture him. Then you never see him again because he is in 'government custody', and we're fed a bunch of PR garbage.

Really I don't care if he's alive or dead at this point. With all of our soldiers fighting for us in those contries at this point we should bomb the SH** out of every country in and around that area and get the whole thing over with. Then theres no more fighting between them and we can just take what we want as far as oil goes. I know there are a lot of good people over there just as much as there is here but if you choose to harbor these kinds of criminals and you agree with there policies then you deserve to get it just as much as they do.

For all we know is that, Osama bin Laden is probably living be like reclusive “Howie Hughes” in some series of deep secret underground basement floors between Pentagon and White House for years now, and playing poker card games and smoking gangja with Pentagon brass and other top officers or even with President himself… All while telling them how to run their War on Terrorism big money making business with the military industries at expense of American taxpayers and with the lives of American troop soldiers, and direct the operations to the global Al-Qaeda networks and Talibans via the couriers for Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence Agency which would relay his messages to them, and for other Islamic countries’ governments that are friendly with USA, doing the same for them … And keep staging a phony Osama bin Laden double person to keep popping up somewhere now and then too.

Or even if he’s dead, but if he keep popping up somewhere now and then, it’s probably an double or an very realistic life-like android that were secretly built by Chinese. Because where do you think Talibans got all of these weapons from? The Chinese likely, and they need them to keep it running be well as big money making business for the Chinese just from across the border.

Nobody believe anything in the news about him whether if he’s alive or not, anymore.

I think some elements of Muslims do act very unwisely, especially with the jihad concept. I'm not just talking about Al Qaeda and Talibans, but various parts of Muslim communities in the world who sympathize with the idea of jihad, whether it's justified or not by Al Quran and Hadits. And don't even start with Israel and Palestine.

Churches are being bombed and Catholics are discriminated in even good-image countries like Malaysia and it doesn't trigger worldwide Catholics to take down a couple of skycrapers in Kuala Lumpur. Buddhist monks are being killed in Burma and Tibet and the worldwide Buddhist community doesn't bomb some buses in Rangoon or Beijing. If an eye is for an eye then the whole world would be blind. The terrorists don't only claim an eye(of the enemy)for an eye... they'll claim ANY eye for an eye, including their own brothers' and sisters', who he/she claims to fight for.I don't think that's what Allah wants for His world

I'm just gonna summarize this for easier viewing:
    1. Who cares what anyone says...if you don't think he's a hero then fine stop getting upset
    2. I do not feel that he is a hero in my eyes, more of a terrorist rather than a martyr for the muslims. Heroes don't hide from what they've done, heroes face the consequences of their actions and mostly heroes live by their convictions.
    3. I've never given politics the benefit of doubt, it is way to obvious that there is another thing going on here like the fight for oil one of the most valuable products on earth.
    4. Once Saddam was taken of the throne, did anyone notice the shift in gears? I mean we were on fifth gear going to catch Saddam but once caught it all of a sudden became less important to catch Bin Laden and help the Iraq military.
