Photo spotlight: Afghan women

iReporter Naeem Muhsiny recently submitted these pictures he took of Afghan women in traditional Muslim garb outside the "Blue Mosque" in northern Afghanistan.

Muhsiny told iReport
that he feels these photos represent the struggle between religious tradition and the modern world faced by many Afghans. "Religion controls every aspect of one's life under the banner of God and secularism frees one from fear and greed, the very theory found in all four major religions," he said.

"Religion divides people under different names and affiliations and secularism breaks those walls by recognizing one value and that is humanity."

Muhsiny was stationed in Afghanistan from January 2010 through August 2011 as the country manager for Afghanistan at the American Councils for International Education, an organization that provides educational programs for Afghan youth.

    BACK TO THE POINT !

What I found very interesting was the chadari was considered beautiful by the author of the article. What was profoundly disappointing was, and I quote, " allows a woman to be in public without jeopardizing her safety OR ruining her husband's social reputation !"

Does anyone else realize the absolute absurdity of these statements ? Why would a woman fear for her safety when in public if she wasn't shrouded ? Aren't men who follow the muslim faith able to control themselves ? Is the mere sight of a woman capable of rendering them senseless ? If a man's social reputation is so easily destroyed by a woman NOT wearing a chadari then it must not have been a very impressive one in the first place.

These are the main reasons I cannot respect or understand anyone who follows these tenets of faith. It is illogical and places the blame for man's bad behavior on the shoulders of women. Must be nice to be able to use half of your population as an excuse...

It is easy to see the analog of this. It is the same a an Englishman putting a hedge or wall around his property. You are less likely to covet what you cannot see, and just like any other property these women should be hidden.

A couple of clarifications: First of, what I wrote is my personal view and it DOES NOT have anything to do with the organization I work for. Secondly, I am not justifying burqa but trying to tell the truth and how people who wear them feel in Afghanistan.

God is above rationality, but he is not irrational. Rationality comes from God, but rationality cannot include God. God can include rationality. If you take mathematic as example, there are irrational numbers. They exist, byt cannot be rationalized.
Mathematic is the closest science to God as the concept of limit can be used to esemplifie the relation betwen God and rationality. The Limit cannot be reached if not by a "jump" called integral calculus. Something similar can be said about God.

First of all Islam is a culture, not a cultures. Second, Islam does not exclude technological innovation. There is nothing in the Quran against technology. Third, Islam is the most modern tradition, the first giving some ethical principles actually still valid. If some islamic countries are primitive, it is a consequence of poverty, colonizations and bad leadership sponsored by the western countries.

Naeem Muhsiny's comments on religion vs. secularism are hurtful to me as a religious person. Although Jewish law governs all that I do (in the name of G-d), I would argue that Secularism is a religion in itself. It's way of life/mentality governs everything you do and think in the name of... yourself?

I was raised and spent most of my life in the secular world and I found there to be just as many restrictions in that way of life as I find in a religious Jewish life. It's just under a different banner. Restrictions so intrinsic and ingrained into our consciousness that we don't even realize they are restrictions until we break away.

What I have, that many women in Afghanistan don't have, it the freedom to choose my lifestyle.

I'm not sure this is a problem of secularism vs. religion as it is a problem of simply.... freedom of religion/religious expression.

While people are still attacking burqua, hijab in general, I think that one can find beauty in them. Not all women who wear such garments are meek and forced to wear them, either. If you want to attack them, maybe attack the shackles of religion in general–most religions put pressures on us. Not that it is always bad, even in my agnostic opinion.

I think it is hilarious that we in the West forget that some Christians still wear head coverings–not just nuns. Western women have worn a variety of head coverings throughout history. Hair can attract almost as much attention as breasts. Also, it's often just practical to wear something over one's head. It provides instant neatness, keeps hair clean, and with shorter hijab–may prevent safety issues with hair. Veils often creates a refined, civilized aesthetic in my eyes, putting aside negative features of SOME Muslim cultures. Or, say, in the case of Hindu ladies wearing veils with their sari, a festive and mysterious feel appears. I've seen lovely photos where the focus is more about colors of veils than the individual woman. Free your mind and learn to appreciate what you may not usually love. I think head coverings will disappear if the women really want them to.

Yes, there can be beauty in what people choose to embrace. But, much of what happens to these women is that they do not have the choice of what to embrace. These women must wear the coverings or be punished, sometimes so horribly that life is nothing but misery.

Covering one's hair is one thing; covering one's face and whole body is something else. It effectively erases you. One thing that supporters of the burqa are leaving out is that visibility from behind that tiny square of mesh is almost nil. Many women are injured and killed because they cannot see traffic coming.

The chadari, the burka, whatever you want to call it is for keeping women like sheep. It is an abuse of power and a means of dominance. I find it interesting that the photographer promotes the benefits of the chadari, and on the other hand makes the very truthful statement that "Religion controls every aspect of one's life under the banner of God and secularism frees one from fear and greed, the very theory found in all four major religions," and "Religion divides people under the different names and affiliations and secularism breaks those walls by recognizing one value and that is humanity." You can't really believe that and at the same time try to make it seem okay for women to have to wear a chadari.

While we may be worlds apart, and disagree on many things, one thing here I do agree with, Moral values in America are becoming a thing of the past and something to be sneered at by those who have no or few morals. There is a saying though, and one I fear will come to pass sooner rather than later, that saying is this "When Fascism comes to America, it will be wrapped in a flag and carrying a Bible".

What that means in simpler terms is, Evil people will use the illusion of Christianity to take control of this country. They are not true Christians, because if they were, they wouldn't do the things they do. They are however, servants of the Enemy. They will have their day, and then they will have their payment.

"Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?"

"And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity."

I disagree with the author's justification of the burqa in Afghanistan. While the burqa might look beautiful as it is blown by the wind, the bottom line is that it is a tool used to control women's participation in the public space. The very idea that an uncovered woman could jeopardize her safety and ruin her husband's "social reputation" is vile and oppressive. I also think it is wrong for the author to tie the idea of the "burqa" to "freedom", when it represents the very opposite. I don't think Afghan women see the burqa as a symbol of their personal freedom, though they may use this language when asked. I think they see the burqa as a social concession they must make in order to participate, however limitedly, in public life. And that is a horrible concession. Few Afghan women in the West wear the burqa – it is usually women from countries in the Middle East who do so in the West.

True words were never spoken. However, this type of dress (burqa) would never work in Western societies. It's offensive to women who believe in equality, democracy, and progressive thinking. England, France, and Western Europe is having difficulty with immigrant Muslims whom refuse to assimilate into Western culture. Sharia laws do not mix with democratic ones. If Muslim women want to remain oppressed, then stay in your third world countries with 7th century beliefs and religion. Otherwise, DO NOT IMMIGRATE TO WESTERN NATIONS. You will not be welcomed if dressed in repressive clothing.

This is an offensive way to justify an equally offensive practise of blanketing the muslim female.

All in all, Afghanistan is a very beautiful country. It's too bad that NATO has to occupy it and that makes me sick! In fact, I would have preferred Communist rule there. Had the Communists won in the beginning, there would have been no need for Russian intervention!
