Dozens of U.S. troops killed in Afghanistan copter crash

More than two dozen American troops are believed to have died in a deadly Chinook helicopter crash in eastern Afghanistan overnight, a U.S. military official told CNN on Saturday.

Among those killed were a mix of special forces from different services, the official said. If the numbers are confirmed, the incident would be the most deadly for coalition forces in the Afghan war, according to a CNN count of international troop deaths.

Who are you referring to as babykillers? The Americans or the Taliban? Maybe if you didn't have such a good view of your lower intestine, you would wake up and realize what terrorists actually do to the villages over there.

Hindu man, your words are harsh but, I can't blame you. It appears that Muslims will continue to stand by and do nothing about the horrible things that are being done in the name of Islam. I think that if things do not change soon, they (Muslims) won't be welcome anywhere. Muslims, its your religion that is being hijacked by terrorists, find them and kill them like the rat B@stards they are or continue to be hated throughout the world.

Hindu is an idiot. The muslims are not responsible for terrorism or for the hijacking of a religion, no more than the Hindu are responsible for the Nazis highjacking of the swastika.
Radicalization is largely caused by the western military operations in the middle east. Religion is not the cause, but the solution.
Muslims should follow Sharia more strictly and USA should respect more the human rights.

Many muslims are wealthy entrepreneurs, other are doing normal jobs and the problems they eventually face are related with the difficoult to find an occupation.

I offer my condolences to the men killed. They were doing what they loved, as their wives told the news companies. Losing that many spec ops soldiers will certainly put a hole in the US precision strike capability, however. It's probably a big blow to morale, also.

Thankfully, the Taliban who shot down the bird got killed today. Back to making Afghanistan a safer place for the Afghan people.

There are so many idiots on this blog that it is a waste of time to get involved! The, yes, OLD, CH 47 is one of the oldest heavy lift choppers in service. For those of you that say it is slow, you need to get it straight! The CH 47 is FASTER than a Blackhawk and most attack choppers, has been upgraded numerous times, and carries more weight than any other helicopter. YES, I do question this entire tragedy, it just doesn't smell right, and smaks of some very poor leadership!

Ronvan, your information is incorrect, I will admit the CH-47 is a work horse but, its a big pathetically slow moving target.
A Cobra or Apache would make quick work of its existance. In an attack senario the CH-47 would last 30 seconds at best. Guy, this thing was brought down supposedly by an RPG which I personally don't believe. This whole situation stinks to high heaven.

RPGs have taken down Chinooks numerous times; Takur Ghar during Anaconda was one such example.

        And yes, Salerno is right:/

Chinooks are not meant to be attack helicopters, they only carry machine guns whereas an Apache or Cobra carries an autocannon, Hellfire/TOW missiles and rockets.

      • AH-1 SC Man

You are correct, they are not the same and you are not comparing apples to apples. Fighting platforms are much more manuverable and quicker than their transport buddies. Their is NO COMPARISON.

Yes, but we are talking about transport helos, are we not?

The Apache can't transport troops. Nor can the Cobra. There is a reason why we have transport helicopters, you know...

We were in the beginning until Ronvan decided to cite some incorrect performance capabilities of the CH-47 compared to the Black Hawk and most Attack Helos. Honestly, I think muslims were wrong in 1948 to attack Israel, as they fought togheter against the British (Jews Beghin was considered a terrorist by the UK).
I think Muslims were wrong and violated Sharia law when they (especially the Almohadi) tried to apply Sharia law by force in Europe even in his religious part.
Allah punished Israel for considering the choosen people, punished the muslims forcing them out of Europe (with the exception of US enforced state of Kosovo) and now punished the navy seals.

We agree that the Almohadis were not good muslims. It looks like something went wrong with the Islamic presence in Europe. They initially brough culture, but later things degenerated and people reacted. There is a reason why Allah did not allow islam spreading militarily in Europe.

thank you for making my point in spectacular style!

As an educational point for other bigots, the Nazis and Zionists were totally NOT the same thing:

Nazism (National Socialism) was the ideology and practice of the Nazi Party and of Nazi Germany. It was a unique variety of fascism that incorporated biological racism and antisemitism.

Zionism is a Jewish political movement that, in its broadest sense, has supported the self-determination of the Jewish people in a sovereign Jewish national homeland. Since the establishment of the State of Israel, the Zionist movement continues primarily to advocate on behalf of the Jewish state and address threats to its continued existence and security.

These SEAL 6 guys are victims of CIA's Osama game in this region. Osama death is still a mystry and these guys were the eyewittnes in the climax of Osama drama and there was possibility these guys may expose this game any time therefore they were killed the way ex President Keneddy was killed by CIA to hide the facts. In intelligence games such killings are necessory for maintenance of security in a highly sensitive operations. Taliban have no such weapons for hitting of these helicopters otherwise they would have never left any helicopter to fly in air any where in Afghanistan. No doubt after few years any CIA operative may write a book and expose the facts behind this incident but at this stage Talibans are being blamed while Taliban are still silent in taking the credit for this. So Americans as a nation should demand enquiry to know the real face of their rulers.

So 31 suspected US criminals were killed by a suspected grenade thrown by a suspected Taliban.
I hope that the US official was authorized to speak to the media.

Those big dual-rotor Chinook's are vulnerable when they let down the big rear door – that's when the enemy sends in the RPG and it only takes one. It is said that among the dead were men from Seal Team 6, founded by Dick Marcinko who was famous in the teams. Even a war dog was lost and they are nearly as hard to train as the men. That rear door design needs to be changed to make it harder for an RPG to penetrate. Maybe slatted armored strips that can be refigured electronically to open either from the bottom, top or side and in pieces like a jigsaw puzzle that can be rogrammed to let out men thru a tighter-sized space that closes and opens very quickly – something space-age not from Viet Nam. That's what we have computers for!!!

Why were so many troops crammed into one helicopter? Eggs in a basket. Some policy wonk at the top decided they could save money by ferrying troops in fewer choppers. This wouldn't be the first time the enemy nailed one our heavily laden choppers. Another time was when a 4-man SEAL team ran into hundreds of Taliban way up in the Hindu Kush. Three were killed up there but the fourth did make it out with help from villagers who didn't like the Taliban and were willing to help the injured SEAL at whatever cost. The initial rescue chopper was heavily laden and one RPG was all it took. But we seem to have short memories for those kind of lessons. It's beginning to look like Viet Nam. The lesson from there was don't go to war unless you go in full bore, no prisoners, no stopping, use whatever it takes. But American civilians are too squeamish about the costs in lives. We never learn.

Come on Carrole, just where do you get all that right-wing mumbo-jumbo from anyway? Anyone with half a brain well knows that we have absolutely no right even to be in that country morally!!!

My father fought under your namesake in WWII and in that war he realized that there are no morals in war. Rules of engagement may sound civilized but in that incident I mentioned with the 4 SEALS, that was what got them killed. Our rules said they couldn't kill the goatherders that stumbled upon their vantage point above a village that housed a Taliban leader they'd been sent to scout so they had to let them go. The goatherders told the Taliban and 3 SEALS died in a firefight where the odds were 4 against nearly a thousand Pashtuns. War has one rule – kill or be killed. Another incident in Kandahar had Rangers coming upon a group of Afghan men at night – but they'd hid their guns so they couldn't touch them. Wonder how many of our guys they killed later on? Countries go to war for many reasons, usually having to do with land or resources like oil or water rights – never heard of morality being involved. Our civil war came close – to free the slaves, or rather to decide whether the new western states should be slave or free – and to decide where the power should lay, with the states or with the federal gvt. But morality? Those are the rules that govern your life, not war. It's taught in church and at home – I'm 69 this month, don't remember being taught morals by anyone but my parents or religious teachers. Afghanistan is the crossroads of Central Asia. Pakistan has nukes, so does India. Russ ia is re-ermerging slowly and China has a billion too many people they are trying to sneak into the "Stans". Indonesia to t he south has more Moslems than any other country and those islands are becoming overpopulated. With the way the weather is drying up, we may have millions more people starving, not just in Somalia. Our troops are in Afghanistan to keep that area from exploding. Morality has nothing to do with it. War is a very grim business. and my father was a master of war for 34 years. He had 4 Commandments: Keep your head down, Keep your weapon clean and by your side, never underestimate your opponent and the most important one of all – Take care of your troops!

Technically the US is not at war with Afghanistan after they put in place Karzai, so what Carole is saying about morality has no relevance in this situation. US CANNOT CONTROL THE WORLD. This is the lesson. As I predicted nothing positive can come from the Bush senior new world order policy. Reagan was cynical as well, but more intelligent.

This is terrible news. Let's just put the blame where it belongs and that is squarely on Pres. Obama. Had he chose to do so, he could easily have had us out of there two years ago but he chose instead to be "politically correct" and try to pursue to war to a "military victory" although we had no right to be there in the first place!!!

You are right Dan, Obama is the first responsible, as he escalated the war in Afghanistan even if OBL was not there anymore. He did not end the war in Iraq and started a new military adventure in Libya, while US economy is deteriorating. Today US debt was downgraded.
