In only eight months, 2010 has become the deadliest year for U.S. troops in Afghanistan, according to a CNN count of Pentagon and NATO figures.
At least 321 troops have died so far in 2010, the highest yearly toll since the conflict began nearly nine years ago. The previous high was last year's 313 American deaths.
Home and Away: Casualties in Iraq and Afghanistan
The deaths occurred during an increase of U.S. troops in Afghanistan and fierce fighting across the nation, particularly in the southern and eastern regions. Roadside bombs were responsible for many of the combat deaths.
President Barack Obama, who regards the Afghan war as the central front in the war against terror, said that because of the troop drawdown in Iraq, where the combat mission has now ended, more resources can be freed up for the fight in Afghanistan, including the added troops.
In his Oval Office speech Tuesday night, Obama said the United States is training Afghan security forces and supporting political solutions in the country, and plans to make a transition to Afghan troop leadership in July.
"As with the surge in Iraq, these forces will be in place for a limited time to provide space for the Afghans to build their capacity and secure their own future," he said.

larry I read one of your earlier posts. you stated that we should not leave afghanistan until we are finished. can you please define how you think we can be "finished" here? i am in the army regular and am currently mid way through my second tour in southern afghanistan. i believe we were finished here when we drove the taliban out of power the first time 9 years ago. they came back. and if we drive them out again, they will return when we leave.
Obama can decrease Soldiers' deaths by changing the policy set. Soldiers are not allowed to shoot unless they are being shot at, they are not allowed to return fire if there is one civilian in the area, and no bombs or artillery fire is allowed unless approved by higher commands (a process that takes at least a few minutes). We might not win "hearts and minds" (like we would win that anyway) but we sure could save a couple hundred, if not thousand Soldiers.

There is no comparison between USA and Srilanka. In Srilanka it was an indigenous uprising within a country but in Afghanistan Americans are occupation forces. You had internal issue and that you resolved after years of fighting. You succeeded because you had cleared your own country of your own miscreants with in your rank and for that your whole nation supported your Govt. But Afghanistan has been invaded and occupied by America. Now tell me please what would have been your response if America would have invaded Srilanka and occupied it. The men and women who serve our country are heroes and, when we send them off to fight we owe it to them to protect them from needless peril and to maximize their chances of survival by making sure their missions are supported by thorough research, solid plans of action, sufficient supply of and access to necessary resources and objectives which are honest and righteous.
I am from the Soviet Union. Had we not immigrated in the late 70s, my older brother would have likely returned,from the army, in a body bag....as many of his friends, and countless Russian soldiers, had.
Everything else aside, we need to acknowledge the historical evidence which indicates our chance of victory is, virtually, zero. The terrain, with it's mountains and caves, is an unbeatable force, in itself....and how do you beat an enemy for whom war has been a consistent part of everyday life and who has no fear of death.

The "strategy" continues to lag, because the basics are not in place, like: cutting the lines of communications= shut down the unrestricted crossings on the border to Pak/Iran; preventing the movement of the terrorists = increase the drone program by at least 50 fold – less casualties more dead terrorists; not dealing with the main source of income for the terrorists= the drug crops/trade BURN THE CROPS/PAY THE FARMERS TO GROW FOOD; increase the local forces, at least 5 fold, by training every tribe in Afg, that hates the Taliban; get rid of corupt obstructionists in the Afg gvmt; pay huge rewards for weapons/explosive cash info; and so on.
This is 9th year of occupation and death toll is constantly rising and this year has crossed the earlier one in August, while four months of this year still remaining. Frankly speaking I doubt US policy makers and see them working on anti America agenda in world affairs. This war is based on wrong assumptions and ill intentions therefore will continue bleeding humanity in senseless, illogical and anti human wars. It will never benefit any combatant but will keep on adding to the human miseries all over the world. In this war all are losers and this human tragedy will continue until we do not take into account the deaths of Afghans and Pakistanis in same war.

Let's see you were approached by a military recruiter whiel attending high school. He made you feel important. He asked you what your dreams were. He told you about the thousands you would receive upon completion of your training. He told you how to manipulate your parents into allowing you to enlist and the right answers to their questions. You enlisted when you were 17 years old. You're an idealist. You come from either a middle class or poor family. You sincerely believed that you could change the world. You're parents were against it in the beginning, but proud of their daughter that she had such a great heart and wanted to make a difference so they signed a waiver. Afterall if they did not sign the waiver they would just cause you to resent them for what might have been. You convinced them to sign because it would allow you to serve your first year of enlistment while a senior in high school. A few weeks following graduation you were sent to base to begin basic training. You received a lot of attention especially if you were an attractive female. You're relatively safe because you are not front line. It was extremely difficult completing your training, and it made you feel like you had accomplished something huge. Some of your fellow male soldiers were not as lucky as they may have been targeted and bullied to the point that they became depressed and attempted suicide. Those others who made it to Iraq and Afghanistan's front line endured what we in America might feel would be unbearable. Thousands of young (mostly 19, 20, and 21 year old) soldiers killed, many more physically and mentally disabled by the war. I'm sorry I respect you as a human being because I know those who have enlisted are probably just naive, idealists, selfless individuals with really good intentons. With all respect ... we're involved in an illegal war for the benefit of making military government contractors and the oil and gas industry even richer at the expense of our young sons and daughters, our Nation's economy, and our reputation among other countries. As long as Pakistan pour's it's Taliban fighters into Afghanistan to specifically undermine the Hamid Karzai Afghanistan government whom PAKISTAN feels tilts towards India who Pakistan views as it's sworn enemy, there is no short term nor long term success for America in Afghanistan.
The way to success:
Gather Pakistan, India and Afghanistan high level envoys to work out a lasting peace treaty in Afghanistan. Even if American lawmakers stop pouring Billions of American taxpayer dollars into Pakistan who uses that cash to supply and equip the Taliban fighters in Afghanistan, PAKISTAN is next door to Afghanistan and can and does wield a great deal of influence and pressure on Afghanistan just as found now across Iraq by Iran.
The status quo is entirely unacceptable. Over 60% of All Americans want America to pull out of Afghanistan NOW entirely. A large number of Americans realize American taxpayers have been funding BOTH SIDES of the War in Afghanistan draining domestic spending and creating a intolerable condition to the Afghanistan people.
Winning or losing Kandahar makes no difference in the future of Afghanistan as long as Pakistan continues to interfer with the existing Hamid Karzai Afghanistan government.
1) Afghanistan and India want the Trans-Afghanistan natural Pipeline (TAP) built and supplying natural gas to New Delhi, India. Pakistan does not.
2) Afghanistan's Karzai clan are linked as major exporters of the world's Heroin. Pakistan and many Middle Eastern nations including Russia strongly resent having their country's flooded with Heroin.
Those two issues appear to be the major issues which must be fully addressed and solved if any lasting peace in Afghanistan is going to be obtained.

Basically George Washington had seen the face and fate of British imperialism and had wished to see American continent free of such expansionist designs which had faced this world empire with humiliating defeat every where in the world and you see that today that British expansionism has been squeezed to UK and is not even accepted by Ireland and Scotland at border. So wise leaders and nations learn from history and George Washington had learnt this from the history therefore had sincerely wished to save his nation from from such humiliation. USA, founded by these great leaders, had strictly followed and supported the principle of universal justice, equality and prosperity and remained neutral in all major wars in Europe and rest of the world. Wars had already faced all combatants with extreme destruction and only American continent was safe and strong therefore replaced ex Master Britain as a world super power after world war II. Unfortunately this change in world politics and leadership of the world did not materialized when US leadership considered Britain unavoidable in their future world leadership. This was in fact deviation from the basic national ideals therefore automatically fell in the old British imperial trap in the name of new colonialism. Today you see that history repeat itself and not only entire American continent but entire world is at war in support or against America.
