5 Americans die in bloody day in Afghanistan

Insurgents and security forces in Afghanistan have cranked up their fight in recent days, with militants ambushing coalition and government targets and an air assault pounding enemy fighters, coalition authorities said on Tuesday.

Five American service members were killed Tuesday in Afghanistan - four of them in a roadside bomb attack in eastern Afghanistan, the International Security Assistance Force said.

The NATO-led force did not release additional details about the roadside attack or where it took place.

A fifth U.S. service member died following an insurgent attack in southern Afghanistan, ISAF said.

In addition, three Afghan supreme court personnel were killed and 12 were wounded in a terrorist attack in the Mosahi district in Kabul province on Tuesday, Afghanistan's Ministry of the Interior said in a written statement.

Please remember that you are responding to what the media tells you, and the media doens't always tell the whole story. My husband happens to be in Afghanistan right now, and he has told me of goings on that I know would never be reported since it seems more and more obvious that the media has an agenda. Terrorists continue to be a threat to our country; we see those stories everywhere. If someone was attacking your child and another person stood up for him, would you chastise the person trying to protect him? War is never popular, but sometimes it is necessary. For those of you who don't support our troops and the job they've offered to do, regardless of whether or not you agree with the war, I hope I don't hear you complaining if we get attacked again.

There is a complain from honest people that these wars are being fought on the backs of poor and minorities and that is the reason that they, the wars, have lasted for so long, with so few, if any, accomplishments, other than the killing of a million plus innocent civilians that had as much to do with 9/11 and Saddam as Pee Wee Herman with space exploration. The only winners are those who started the wars, because they will collect millions from their corporate friends. We need the draft back, but republicans and some democrats will not go there. They need Joe Public, the poor and minorities to show their patriotism for the war cowards that will rather hide in the ANG or in deferments or in Canada or England that to defend, a la Pat Tillman, America when the going gets tough.

You fellas have to step on the gas and provide total battlespace surveillance and analysis, anythingless then total battlespace surveillance is irresponisible and unexceptable. I don't care who you have to fire to get the job done, but it's an imperative, in my mind, that you get up to work focusing on this conflict in Afghanistan.

As if you said "Shoot first and ask questions later". You're IQ must be less than 85. The US illegally invaded a country based on lies. They shouldn't be there in the first place. There are innocent bystanders and hostages. The policy of shooting first and asking questions later is ridiculous. All the money that is funneled for the war should be used for a better educational system in the US ... I would suggest better geography courses to start with. Good luck with the war on oil!

      • Andrew

Errrrr, Martin, I agree with your rejection of the "shoot first, ask questions later" comment, but perhaps you are the one in need of a geography lesson and should think seriously about glass houses before making derogatory comments about the IQ of others. We are talking about Afghanistan, not Iraq. Afghanistan is the country with a lot of mountains between Iran and Pakistan, remember? You know, the country that harbored Osama Bin Laden, that helped train the 9/11 attackers, that hatched the unholy Al Qaeda/Taliban alliance, and the country we received UN support to invade (i.e., hard to argue the invasion was illegal unless you are a firm believer in the Taliban legal code)....oh, yeah, Afghanistan has no oil.

        September 2, 2010 at 10:42 am | Report abuse |
      • SAM

        I agree with you martin.
        @ Andrew
        1. Afghanistan is not between Iran and Pakistan. Iran and Pakistan share a long border and there is nothing really between them when they are sharing a long border.
        2. Yes Afghanistan has no OIL but they are a gateway to OIL rich central Asian countries and also they have over a trillion $ worth of minerals too just in case the OIL corridor is not motivation enough for the corporatocracy to invade Afghanistan.
        3. Just in case you forgot the Taliban government asked for proof of involvement of Osama Bin Ladin in 9/11 attacks and were willing to give up Osama if he is to be prosecuted in a third party host/country. As per Taliban US President already said on state TV that they wanted Osama dead or alive i.e. the verdict was already given without any proof so it is not ethical for them to hand him over.

Taliban were no angels but Bush could have avoided the war and got hold of Osama if Bush would have provided the proof instead of forceing a War that even afte 10 years have Osama running free.

I do agree that our lives, myself being in the military with an infantry unit, is very valuable, but most infantrymen value our freedom more than our lives. We value not being terrorized in this free land. We're not happy to give our lives... if it were up to us... we wouldn't want to fight, but when someone comes on our land without our permission and push us around... I will not stand around to expect someone to stand and fight... I will stand up with my brothers on my left and right and defend this country... we are trained to survive and to defend.
