ROME, Italy — Two Italian soldiers were killed in an attack on Wednesday in western Afghanistan, officials said.
Italian Senate speaker Vanino Chiti announced.the deaths on the Senate floor, and a minute of silence was observed.
Speaking to Italian diplomats at the Foreign Ministry, Italian Premier Silvio Berlusconi said that he was "saddened by the news of the death of two Italian soldiers in Afghanistan."
NATO's International Security Assistance Force said a bomb killed two troops in the west on Wednesday but didn't say what their nationalities were.
Italian media said the attack took place during a patrol in Herat province, and the blast was caused by an improvised explosive device.
