WikiLeaks shines spotlight on mysterious Task Force 373

U.S. military documents released by WikiLeaks show that a U.S. Special Forces unit in Afghanistan assigned to hunt down terrorists also was responsible for the deaths of civilians, Afghan police officers and, in one particularly bloody raid, seven children while they attended school.

The unit is called Task Force 373. It’s assigned to kill so-called “high value” targets or detain them without trial, often in night operations. The 373 follows a hit list of sorts, according to The New York Times and The Guardian newspaper in England. (WikiLeaks gave The New York Times, The Guardian and German magazine Der Spiegel early access to the documents before posting them.)

The list is referred to as Jpel, which supposedly stands for “joint prioritized effects list.”  Der Spiegel reported in January that the Task Force was active in Kunduz in northern Afghanistan.

“U.S. special forces with Task Force 373 are sent out on operations on a nightly basis,” it wrote. “In addition to taking suspected Taliban extremists prisoner, they have many times been responsible for eliminating wanted Taliban leaders.”

The documents published by WikiLeaks cover controversial operations by Task Force 373.  Among the incidents:

- Seeking Taliban commander  Qarl Ur-Rahman in a valley near Jalalabad, Task Force 373 became engaged in a firefight in June 2007 at night. According to a document linked on the New York Times and Guardian sites, “The original mission was aborted…” and the task force later filed a report which said “7 X ANP NIA, 4 X WIA” resulted. That means seven Afghan police officers had been killed. Read the document

- Later that month, the Task Force launched am operation to kill or capture  senior al Qaeda figure  Abu Laith al-Libi in Paktika province, close to the border with Afghanistan. They failed to find Libi, who was killed several months later. During the operation, a missile attack was launched on a mosque compound where several suspects were thought to be, but the action resulted in the deaths of 7 children. The follow-up report said “An elder who was at the Mosque stated that the children were held against their will and were intentionally kept inside.” Read the document, reproduced by the New York Times

U.S. Special Operations missions in Afghanistan have been criticized by human rights groups.

“You have people going in with a kill list and the public accountability simply doesn’t exist,” said Sarah Knuckey, director of the Project on Extrajudicial Executions at the Center for Human Rights and Global Justice at the New York University School of Law. She went to Afghanistan in 2008 to interview dozens of civilians who had complained of indiscriminate military attacks.

“We didn’t hear specifically the name 373, but it’s clear, judging by what’s been on WikiLeaks – if [WikiLeaks’] information is correct – that what civilians told us is true,” she told CNN.

What do people think happen in a war zone.... People die and probably a lot of innocents in the process. The military is for one reason and that is to kill people. They are not negotiators or policemen or pacifiers. They kill ... that is their job. This f**t up, leaderless gov we have needs to get out of the way and let the military lite it up. One thing is for sure if you want to lose a war get the politicians involved. Better yet put the politicians on the front line where they would get their asses shot at and this war would come to an end...... Any war is a horrible war .. let the military do their job!

Civilians die in wars. It happens. More civilians died in ONE bombing run over Dresden than Iraqis have died in the entire war since 2003. Doesnt make it better but it happens. I feel for the parents of those kids (I have 3) but to make such a huge deal out of it is crazy as they clearly are being put in harms way by the enemy who is actually at fault here.

Dagame – yep Saddam is the only leader since WWII (give ya a hint his name was HITLER) to use chemical weapons routinely. Not only against his own people but also against Iran in the Iran-Iraq warAnd for all you second guessers out there, it is the bastion of the fool. Just like I didnt 2nd guess Bush on WMD (I was pretty sure they wouldnt find any as I worked in ARCENT/CENTCOM during the 90s), I dont 2nd guess Obama on the Stimulus, etc etc etc. If you dont speak up beforehand then dont speak up afterwards.

yep, thats war for you, where killers instead of being trialed are hailed as heroes... and the public is too stupid to realise it.

Civilians get killed in war, period. That is the reality. We do more today to prevent civilian dealths than we ever have. Back in WWII, we only gave it lip service. Ask the survivors of Dresden or Tokyo, Nagasaki or Hiroshima. The civilians were pretty much held equally accountable along with their government. That has always been the way of war. There is no way to totally protect civilians and still win the war. Grow up and get real. It is people like the members of Task Force 373 that keep all of us alive, including the weak-kneed liberals who think all evil will go away if we just roll over and play dead.

We didn't attack the nations of the bombers' origin because they were not harboring them like Afghanistan was. Everyone always says that, that the bombers were Saudi, Egyptian, etc. Yeah, we know, but it was the Afghani government under the Taliban that provided them a base of operations from where they struck us. Why would we retaliate against Egypt because a few of their citizens blew themselves up. It was the Taliban that empowered them.

Another misconception that I have seen here is the history of the relation between the Taliban and the US. Yes,during the Soviet invasion, we supported the insurgency, which included many that later became Taliban and al-Qaeda. However, the vast majority of those fedayeen became what we now know as the Northern Alliance, allies of ours that greatly contributed to our initial success in 2001-2002.

What 373 and units like them do does not violate the Geneva Convention. The intentional targeting of non-combatants is illegal, but collateral damage is simply a part of war that soldiers deal with. Also, those who call this genocide need to pick up a dictionary. Genocide is the deliberate and systematic extermination of a national, racial, political, or cultural group. Think the Holocaust, Bosnia, Rwanda, etc. Just because there have been a number of innocent Afghanis killed does not mean its genocide. Please think before writing.

Disagreeing with the reason for war is one thing, but the actions of American service members has been extraordinary, with the exception of a few bad apples like abu-Ghraib. If you don't like the war, tell the politicians, but don't play armchair quarterback with our troops when you have no knowledge of what war is and are using immature and uninformed logic like I've been seeing

Task Force 373 reminds me of GESTAPO/SS/ tactics. Remember post-WW2 Nuremberg trials? Just following orders heh???hmmmmm
And all this 911 blame game stretching back to (a probably fictional) jerk named Osama bin whatever or other fancy arabic sounding name...has anyone (preferably western-with credible credentials) ever even seen or interviewed this Osama cartoon character in his cave? I just hope all these TF373 hit squad SS type clones aren't simply on-the-job training for eventual action *within* US territory. Or are they already at work on black ops here??????? Is there also a US citizen hit list on the wikileaks TF373 files??? I wouldn't be surprised...at all. Not-at-all....

There's a lot of talk about truth here. The truth is people will form groups with other people like them, whether the similarities be religious, ethnic, political, national, etc. And these different groups will always have conflict with different groups. Violence is part of humaqn basic nature. And so is greed for that matter. Don't think for a second that certain people have not benefitted from the conflicts that have erupted since the end of the Cold War. Bin Laden will always be martyr when he dies (if he isn't dead already) and makes money from donations to 'his cause'. Bush and Cheney made millions off the wars. Extremist religous leaders all over the world have had their positions elevated and are exhaulted by their followers. People in power want more power....and use the humans violent natures to gain more power.
Personally...I feel the United States was justified to invade Afghanistan. A hostile government has harboring a hostile group responsible for an unforgivable attack against innocent people. whether or not Bush knew the attacks were coming....Al Qaeda were the ones who planned and executed the attack. So Afghanistan is justified in my mind. Iraq was not...that was most definately based on a lie. I served in the Army for 5 years....deploying to Iraq twice. I had a moral disagreement with the reason for the war in Iraq. But I also swore an oath to serve my country, and I did to the best of my ability. Just because a war has an immoral justificatiom, it didn't mean that I couldn't act morally in the execution of my duties. That's how every soldier should think, I believe. sometimes....it is moral to kill. Sometimes, for the safety and security of a people, it is necessary to push the boundaries of morality in the darkest of gray areas.
I left the service when my comittment was up. I felt like I was being used to help already rich and powerful people get more rich and powerful, and that the army senior leadership was, at best, childish. Everybody wanted to be Patton or McArthur. They wanted their cake and they wanted it yesterday and sorry, but I had no eggs or sugar. It didn't feel to me like I was protecting my country anymore.
I am not going to speculate on whether this Task Force 737 exists or if they are wrong in what they are doing or if any of these reports are accurate. I'm not going to judge people I don't know based on statements that could easily be lies as easily as they could be truths. We have no way of knowing for sure. There is actually an old Islamic saying from an old sect.."there are no thruths" (and yes, that was the saying of the original leaders of the old Islamic assassin cult, not from the new computer game. The game developers did their research).
I personally feel the universe has a way of evening things out. At least I hope so.
Really the only thing we can do is use our intellect, open-mindedness, and moral compass to try to act morally in our own lives and try to help the others we can reach do so too.

Is this not a stupid sentence? Are the brave men of Spec Ops supposed to put someone on trial before detaining them?! Huh? That's why they're "Black Ops"... It's writing like this, from people who have never had the desire nor the courage to serve in the Armed Forces, nor even understand the political necessity of units such as these and their effects on the enemies morale that hinder America's ability to fight effectively. The only alternative to sending hundreds of thousands of Soldiers, Sailors, Marines, Airmen, and Coast Guardsmen into harm's way is to fund and support cover operations either through the Special Operations community or the Central Intelligence Agency's Clandestine Operations.

After reading through many of these comments first I would like to know if those that live in the USA and criticize the government or our military will call on them if the war turns up in our country, on your doorstep? Hope not...We have had a taste of what it can be like to be attacked and in a most cowardly way. 9/11 was not even directed toward the military, it was a plan in the making for years against innocent civilians. Our military tries to avoid the innocent getting killed but it's impossible when you have the enemy hiding behind them like the cowards they are. I have had family members in the Army, Navy and Marines and they have all been to war. I had a cousin killed in Afghanistan in 2008. He was moving prisoners with other Afghan officers, he thought, when one of them shot him under his vest killing him. He left behind a wife and three daughters. My grandson is a Marine and he will leave tomorrow for Afghanistan for eight months. He is ready to go and has been since he joined. He is very proud to be serving. His family will be praying hard for his protection. He knows full well the risk. We are all very proud of him and yellow ribbons will go up until he comes home. If this war will never be won it's because we are dealing with a people that hate and they raise up kids and train them with the same hatred. I personally would like to see all military brought home and see where these countries that say we are intruders end up. I think they will beg for our help eventually but they and the critical world need to see it. We can use our sevicemen here to defend us when our enemies have nothing better to do than to come calling and attack us and show the world what they really are made of....but that won't happen so we pray to our Father in Heaven to bring an end to this. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else!!!!

"Children. Killed." I know war is bound to be gruesome, but it is very difficult to justify the deaths of seven children. Even if it somehow contributes to or is mysteriously linked to our success over there. The hypocrisy should stand out to anyone with a distaste for patriotic bias: a bomb that neutralized a terrorist contributes to our objective, a bomb that neutralizes a child is a form of terror, accidental or not. It terrorized a community and it horrifies those who have experienced it for the rest of their lives. You can either be honest with yourselves and accept that this sort of collateral damage is a form of terror, or you can cower behind you irrationality and and stand by your hypocrisy. The American military killed children. Damn us to hell.

So its ok for the US to support they're evil ways as you put it but as soon as its not in their interest then its suddenly not OK. Do you not see the hypocrisi of it all? Its truly sad to see the amount of hate comments on this board. Anyway. Lets not forget how this all began. The Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan on the pretext of peace keeping, war broke out because the sovients were trying to stablish a puppet communist goverment so the people rose up against communism. The US saw this opportunity and decided that it would help the Afghans with weapons and gorrila warfare training provided by the CIA to Bin Laden and others flocking to Afghanistan for the Jihad against the communist infedels. The US goverment played a big role in the rise of fundamentalist Islam since it was in they're best interested at the time to have all these radicalized young muslims to fight against a common enemy (the USSR). Once it was all done and the USSR retreated and left afghanistan, the US lost interest and after years of infighting between the factions that were fighting against the Soviets the Taliban rose above the rest.

So who funded and created fundamentalist/extreemist Islam? The US goverment, and now its turned on them. Who would of though huh?

this is funny.... they act like this is a secret gov group that assembles at night to assassinate people!! task force is a designator of a special operations unit. all units in socom whether it be marines, army or navy special forces they are designated as a task force. and the corresponding number dictates what branch it is and what company or team. the number can be broken down like a vin number on a car. so this is nothing special. at all. and the operations at night... when do you think it is better to get someone? when they are awake and alert or tired and sleepy with limited night vision capabilities? night time is the answer. and the jpel list is just another acronym for something in the military. they have to name a list of the most wanted and dangerous in the country dont they? just like police officers have a bolo list for the guys that are high profile in their town. this article is clearly trying to make something nominal into a conspiracy. and guess what happens when our forces go to get someone who is wanted, they fight, it is their belief. so we kill them. and the 7 ANA KIA or WIA that is just a simplified way to sup up the troops in contact that occured. these arent indiscriminate assaults. these are very well planed, often months to get enough evidence to capture kill someone. and the operations are professional. if the public only knew how much planning and consideration goes in and what REALLY goes on. the civilian killing and all that is not what REALLY goes on. there are hundreds if not thousands of these operations a year, many taliban die along with NATO and ANA too but civilian is rare!!!! this is the truth. i ask all citizens of the USA and abroad to please know the whole situation and not be biased. war is hell. but it is not all bad. i do respect all opinions but there are facts out there and i feel some people thrive on the negative or what ever feeds there beliefs while ignoring the opposite.

Everybody wants to feel safe and free but nobody likes the price. There are harsh realities in war and they're unfortunate. But unless/until you pick up a weapon and stand on the line-you'll never know. Sometimes collateral damage occurs unintentionally without malice aforethought (in other words by accident). These soldiers have a hard job and I doubt that they are the perpetrators of acts of gross recklessness showing a lack of care for human life. I suspect the truth is quite the opposite-Soldiers try to do the right thing….protecting you and me from the likes of Osama Bin Laden. So I say deal with it! You can’t have your cake and eat it too. AND it’s because of the soldiers of past and presence that you have the right to free speech; not to mention the ideals of being innocent until proven guilty…… I’ve served with some of the finest men and women for more than 22 years-they deserve our best!!!!!!!!

Robert Heinlein put it pretty good. I'm paraphrasing here, but the point is just about right:

There are three types of people in the world: the sheep, the wolves, and the sheepdogs. The sheep don't like the sheepdogs because their teeth remind them of the wolves. But when a wolf comes around, you'll find 30 sheep trying to hide behind one sheepdog.

Basically, all of the naive civilians out there who think we can fight a "nice" war and talk the Taliban to death....if you ever had them dropped in a combat zone, about to be beheaded by the "wolves", you would find them praying for one of those soldiers from 373 to come and save the day.

Comparing units like this to the SS is wrong, and just plain inaccurate. The SS intentionally carried out the genocide of Jews and other groups. These SpecOp guys go after the bigwigs who direct the attacks against American soldiers and Afghani civilians. Sometimes the op goes bad, but thats never the intention. Not so with the SS or the Taliban.

Amazes me how many people on here write "crawl back into your cave".... Grow up, that's the best you can think of??? Also, some of you may find it suprising that while you say 4000 (which is a wrong count) Americans died on 9.11, I dare you to do the research to learn how many of those people you justify the W.O.T. are actually Americans (hint hint.... WTC had quite a few illegals working there). Also, some of you may want to read the actual text from Bin Laden which gives his reason for the attacks (which were in response to America's actions), NOT THAT I AGREE WITH IT, but much like how we will label the friend of a brother's cousin's sister of Taliban an "enemy combatant", Bin Laden labels anyone who worked for or contracted with the American federal gov't and corporations a terrorist.... therefore his justification for attacking America. But that would be unamerican of many of you to read that liberal crap and actually do some critical thinking.

Everyone complaining about collateral and saying that we are no better than the Taliban need to remember this: we do not intentionally kill innocents. Yes, innocent people die, thats war, but we never drop a bomb for the express purpose of killing an innocent, especially a child. The Taliban do intentionally kill innocent civilians.

We were attacked on 9/11. Afghanistan is our response to that. It is no different than a police officer responding to a crime, albeit on a larger scale. The purpose of government is to preserve the rights of its citizens and provide for the common defense. A failed state in Afghanistan presents a danger to the common defense, and while we go out of our way to ensure collateral doesn't happen, things do not always go right. I am sorry. But do not think in a million years that what we do is anything akin to the terrorists we are fighting.

"Death is unfortunate, and civilian casualties are regrettable; but that's what war is– and besides, Dave's right, after the gutless attack on us on our home ground, we owe it to our dead to bring the fight the enemy's door."

So by your reasining, since according to Bush 9/11 was an act of war, then the 3,000 civilian casualties are just... ho hum, war casualties, regrettable but hey, that's war, right?

This begs the question, why are U.S. civilian lives more sacred than Afghan civilian lives? You think it's okay to retaliate against civilians? And where did you get the idea that the Taliban attacked us? It was Al Qaeda, wasn't it? Last I heard they're operating in Norway. Shall we attack Norway next?

      Diana,
We are trying to stop those responsible, those we are fighting are to cowardly to follow any traditional rules or laws of war. Despite what you may think, the US Military does not intentionally target innocent civilians, but when those that are being targeted hide behind women and children what are they supposed to do? Do you want US Servicemen and women to stand in the open and be shot and not return fire? Those responsible for 9-11 did not target military targets, the pentagon isn't even really a military target and the twin towers sure wasn't one. That is the difference.

You people make me laugh. How many of you that are complaining about this have ever served in a war? Maybe one or two? You all sure seem to know a lot about combat and what its like for not even being there. The Taliban hate thier own people. They want to basicaly enslave them and have the afghan people live in constant fear. They go around every day killing women and children of afghanistan. This all leaked from wiki leaks, an online based system that you dont even know if its true and you people are holding on to every word like its the bible. Speaking of the bible those that say they believe in allah so they must die you are dumb. Allah means god. The only major difference between muslim and most other religions is that jesus is only a profit to them and not thier savior. Why arn't you guys on here bashing WW1, WW2, Korea, Vietnam or hell the wars other countries have fought in that we didn't. All wars have had women and children killed by both sides during combat. You guys need to realize that troops act under orders. We give up our rights when we enlist. We fight for your freedom but we give up ours in the process. Yes i said we. I am on my second combat tour and i have seen the good and the bad sides of war. Just the other day i had a small afghan boy about 3 years in age climb up into my lap while i was sitting down and gave me a hug. I look over at our interp. and the boys dad and he was crying because before we drove the taliban out his son has never been that happy and free. i am sick of typing so i will leave you people with two things. 1. The only reason this war is lasting so long is because all the americans that cry over spilt milk make our jobs extremly hard so we are fighting with our hands tied behind our backs. 2. Most of us military members have degrees ranging from A.A.S to Masters and we didnt pay a dime for them. So how are we stupid when we have a job we will never lose, free health care at any hospital, and free money for unlimted education that we earned.

Jeremy, God bless you and thank you for protecting our country. Please be safe and know that there is still a LOT of us Americans that will stand firm behind you soldiers, no matter what the cause of war was.

And I'm usually not a huge fan of Robin Williams, but he seemed to have a pretty good idea of how to deal with Afghanistan: "Well we could nuke them back to the stone age, but that would be an UPGRADE for them!"

Again, God bless each and every one of our US soldiers, and may they make the devil himself turn around and flee!

Because you're proving that war is necessary when it's not the only answer. In 10 years now – what has been accomplished. I'm from that part of the world – Pathans/Afghans don't follow any laws and it's next to impossible to create a real country out of that mess.

BTW, if you think you're so smart to be getting everything you have by being in the Army – you should stop and think how you're simply messing up other people's lives to take for yourself. Perhaps, those that don't want to go and kill are the smart ones since they realize what's really going on. You're just sheep being led to slaughter.

Explain to me your meaning of the term "innocent". The US Military does not randomly kick in a door to somebodies house and just start shooting the place up. Maybe if you are so innocent you shouldn't be standing anywhere near the guys we are fighting. Please don't tell me that you honestly think those "innocent" people over there don't know who the fighters are and aren't. Don't stand next to a Taliban fighter, don't support a Taliban fighter and you'll be less likely to die like a Taliban fighter.

      1. Bad guys (what other people call terrorists) blew up our planes, buildings and people.
      2. The bad guys learned how to be bad guys in bad guy camps (terrorist training sites) in Afghanistan.
      3. Afghanistan (and the Taliban that was in charge) supported the bad guy camps.

The bottomline: American government is no better than the terrorists themselves. Over the past decade, American army has probably killed 50 times as many innocent Afghans and Iraqis as the number of innocent Americans that died on 9/11. That is a shameful statistic. The answer to terrorism can never be terrorism itself.

Lets get something straight (to the Americans that fail to understand why America interferes with every countries business): America is in it to control resources, and to make their companies profitable, and to make a handful of rich Americans even richer. They have a hidden agenda, which is why they lie to their own public.

Those who justify the killing of innocent Afghans and Iraqs are cowards. They live in their well protected houses in the US and can never even begin to understand the hardships that most Afghans and Iraqs have to face. Every day life is a struggle for them. Many don't have food, water, and shelter. All they want to do is live in peace (thats right only a small minority of those people are actually what the Americans refer to as "terrorists").

The sin of Americans lies in their trust in the state. Americans are mostly socialists if either the right or left wing verity.

The mess the US has made in the Arab world is enormous. Were it not for the US, the corrupt governments of Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Syria would have been overthrown and replaced with democracies decades ago. Same goes for several lessor Arab states. Iran would probably be a democracy today if the CIA hadn't overthrown it and appointed the Shaw.

I am thankful that in my life I have been fortunate to meet many Native Americans across America and they have without exception, shown far more peace, more honor, more respect for life, the land, the sea, the air, and even those(us) who have taken so much from them. Native Americans have respect in their blood where we have immense greed, contempt, thirst for blood, and utter disregard for all but ourselves. To Hazmat: Bin Laden was very clear about why he concocted the 9/11 plot. He hated the US for having troops in Saudi Arabia, which he considers sacred because Mecca and Medina are located there. (We were in Saudi Arabia, nowhere near Mecco or Medina, at the invitation of the Saudi government, but that didn't seem to count for much with him.) At least that's how I understand the reason for 9/11.

Dave well said!!!!!!!!!!!!! Also let's not forget where these terrorist thugs masterminded such terrible attack on innocent civilians. US has been very mild in tackling the real culprits. They have let Pakistani government and its spy agency stew these murderous plans What US should do is take on the Pakistanis directly. Since 2001 we have donated/committed nearly 18 billion dollars to this wretched country, and received nothing in return. Osama is still in hiding. Terrorist activities continue unabated with Pakistani ISI's covert support. Our tax dollars are being wasted in feeding an unreliable ally in form of Pakistan. The US needs Pakistan to access Afghanistan – a landlocked country. Currently Pakistan is the only viable option for US to combat terrorists hiding in the hinterland between Pakistan & Afghanistan. USA could save billions of dollars if it had a real ally in that region. And it can create one and more such allies by disintegrating Pakistan, and help our marines access the terrorist habitats directly from the Persian Gulf.
Many regions of Pakistan already have people who want to secede from the country. USA can help this process by coordinating with the political leaders of NWFP, Balochistan, Sindh and Karachi to disintegrate Pakistan under the supervision of the United Nations.
The Following new countries can be formed:
    – REPUBLIC OF PAKHTOONISTAN
    – REPUBLIC OF BALOCHISTAN
    – PEOPLES’ REPUBLIC OF SINDHUDESH
    – REPUBLIC OF JINNAHPUR
USA will then have direct access to deal with the terrorists without having to bribe the Pakistanis.

It is clear after reading maney of the comments posted on this site that indivduals who know notihng of the military or of Special Forces say the most outrages and incorrect things. TF 373 is an elite group of soldiers like all Special Forces soldiers. They are not blood thursty murders, they simpley have a job to do and do it well. The JPEL list is a vetted target list, meaning that individuals on this list have had files built agaisnt them and go before a board. Once individuals are placed on this list they will be targeted. Every combat soldier in Afghanitsn will at one point conduct a mission to kill or capture these high ranking or high value targets. They are IED makers, trainers, and suppliers. They enemey does not hind in caves they hind in thier homes, in friends homes, and in homes of Afghans that they don't even know. They do this becuase they know our limitations. They know the value that we place on life which is higher than they ever will. So question why those chiledren were there don't simplely question soliders for doing their jobs that you would be to affaird to ever do. Next time you see a soldier in uniform thank them for their service don't look down your long nose at them and judge.

Thanks for trying to clear this up for so many of the retards on this site. Accept the fact there are people out there who are willing to sacrifice everything to put all bad people in the earth. From reading that report, you don't know if it was the 373 people that killed those children, or was it the person(s) they were going after that did it before they got there. The TB and AQ people do not care who around them gets injured while they hide with their tail in between their legs. They have one job, IED, trainer, money, bomber, whatever it is, that is their task. They don't care who lives and dies. Most of your "friends, relatives, or whom ever" that have been to Iraq or Afghanistan have probably never been on a "mission", they never left the base, but they still had an important job, they deserve their credit. However, applaud the fighters of 373 for only they know the truth to these stories and continue to carry out the difficult missions night after night to end this war.

Interesting reply from a Special Forces member. It shows that they really think it is absolutely ok to have a list of assassinations, without any legal basis. Just imagine if that list is drawn up 'by the other side'. All of a sudden it would be criminal.

        Rafiq,

I was a soldier (obviously not a Special Forces Soldier) and it is 100% okay to have a target list of individuals to be killed or captured. If they choose to come quietly they can live and if not; oh well. These people are responsible for countless American, Coalition, Afghan security forces and civilian deaths. Maybe you don't understand that when a bomb goes off in a crowded market civilians are the worst hit.

In Vietnam the value they placed on their family members came home to me when an old lady was caught in a crossfire. The U.S. gave the family $500 and that was ok with them. Six months later their water buffalo was shot and they demanded no less than $900. In Afghanistan it is worse because they are taught that the fastest way to paradise is to be killed in battle so when they lose a family member they know they went to Paradise. TF 373 just sends more of the RIGHT ones there.

9-11 was started by a hell bent President Bush who wanted to pay Saddam back for threatening daddy. Bush knew Congress, even controlled by the neo-cons wouldn't approve of his attack first, ask questions later. So he and his henchmen devised a plan. They knew the terrorists were already in America, and they knew an attack was coming, so Bush went to Texass for a month in August 2001 and ignored the threats. America is not the shining beacon of purity the righties make us out to be. Americans violated many parts of the Geneva convention in the Afghan & Iraqi wars its not even funny. Bush will escape persecution and SCOTUS will make him exempt. We can't be running all over the world planting the "freedom & democracy flags" every time we don't agree with another country. We can't cry that Iran or North Korea may be making a nuclear device, when America has over 5,500 devices at the ready. We need to STOP ALL foreign aid NOW, most importantly aid to and with Israel.

Regardless of anyone's political leanings, do any of you think for a minute that whatever President is in the Whitehouse, he doesn't have up to date information on what's going on in the world? Having defended this country for the last 25 years, I've never had any issue with individuals voicing their political viewpoints (left or right). Whether the US gov't had anything to with the planning of 9/11 attacks is up to debate, but im 100% sure certain gov't officials used the event to orchestrate a war in Afghanistan & Iraq later on. The US gov't acted on a Nov 2001 bin Laden tape that "just happened to be recorded with no purpose" and was "luckily found intact in the rubble some raid" featured a 'Osama bin Laden' that looked and sounded unlike 'Osama bin Laden' of the past. A European company that specializes in voice analysis/recognition technology for the most secure banks around the world tested the audio of all the tapes of bin Laden after 9/11 and concluded that the Nov 2001 tape didn't match previous confirmed authentic tapes of bin Laden prior to 9/11... however our gov't somehow concluded that the guy on the Nov 2001 tape was the real 'bin Laden'... IM JUST SAYIN SOMETHINGS NOT RIGHT ABOUT THIS WAR...

There is the tiny little coincidence of a certain policy thinkthank called the Project for a New American Century that was calling for an immediate invasion of Iraq throughout the late 90's. This group contain a bunch of yahoos that later served in the Bush Jr. White House (Feith, Wolfewitz, Libby, Rumsfeld, Cheney, Pearle to name a few). Anyway they published a White Paper in 98-99 (that can still be found on the web) that essentially stated that "A NEW Pearl Harbor" might be necessary to galvanize the fury of the American people and enable them to get their desired regime-change invasion. What better Pear harbor can you think of than the WTC complex that had already attacked once in an operation that included a covert FBI informant actually assembling the real bomb used in the parking garage.

Why "especially Israel"? Believe it or not, the US has and will provide aid to countries that do far worse. Think about all the African aid that is seized by genocidal leaders. US aid to Bosnia and Kosovo and Serbia in the 90's, where a war broke out and a genocide occured. American aid to countries that happened to be on their side one decade, and then another decade they are against us. Israel is really no worse than any other country, every country tends to be violent and brutal, but for some reason, Israel always gets singled out.

True! Bombing in New York, Pentagon (DC), Mumbai, London, Medrid was also unannounced. so why can't we (US forces) go in Afghan towns and try to root out talibans using special forces? It's fair!

So if Mexico declares war on a drug cartel who filled the morgue in Juarez, comes to the US and in an attempt to kill a drug cartel member they kill your kid at school it will be okay then, right? Or is it only okay to Afghanis civilian not American civilians. Check your footing carefully on the slippery slope where you stand as the angle may not be what it seems.

Note to MaryM -You mention the Geneva convention, well this was my outfit's view of the Geneva convention during the VN war– The enemy should be treated with respect –unless there is no one watching in which case we will just blow the fu...rs' away!!
War is not a game! WHAT RULES? THERE ARE NO RULES IN WAR. RULES EXIST SO THE VICTOR CAN PROSECUTE THE LOSER AFTER IT IS OVER OR WHEN IT IS CONVENIENT. WAR IS SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST (OR THE ONE WITH THE BIGGER GUN OR THE MOST RESOLVE!) THE GENEVA CONVENTION RULES IS JUST THERE TO GIVE THOSE NOT DOING THE ACTUAL FIGHTING A SENSE OF RIGHTEOUSNESS AND PROVIDE POLITICAL COVER. 373 DID ITS JOB. COLLATERAL DAMAGE IN WAR IS UNAVOIDABLE.

Cut the bad man deep. Cut him bad. Make him stop being bad. Forever. Thank you, Team 373, for making bad people take dirt naps. I know you'll forever live with the collateral losses that combat incurs. In the end, you're doing the right thing making the right people go away. Forever. Rock that sh't.

"Blah, Blah, Blah.. Cry, Cry, Cry.. If you want to play with fire, you'll get burnt!!! I can give a crap about the 7 children in the mosque or the afghanistan policemen who were civilian casualties. When they killed 3000+ american civilians which included men, women, children, policemen, firemen, and rescue personnel these people were parading in the streets. Maybe civilians wouldn't have to die if these people weren't hiding behind them and running away from the fights they provoke."

Too bad we can't win there. The Afghans will only know warlords like the idiot in power now–would you fight for this crook? The country is so huge it would take millionsof troops to pacify it. As soon as we leave the country will fall back in tribes/clans. So......send in the A-Team....Superman...my ex-wife–there's a mean killer.

This is War, there will be collateral damage. Would the American public rather have dead Soldiers or dead Afghans. IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO STAND BEHIND OUR SOLDIERS. FEEL FREE TO STAND IN FRONT OF THEM. And when you symptahize with U.S Forces killing civilians remember the 3,000 that died on 9/11.

Remember the insurance policy increase shortly before, the short selling of American Airlines stock, the superthermite residue still evident in NYC to this day, the first explosion was in the basement, the perfect implosion free fall, oh yeah make sure you remember that WTC building 7 was never hit by _anything_. I will never forget, in fact thanks to Wikileaks I am now reading the pager transcripts which I reordered by pager ID. War is not a video game and avoidable error is not an error, it is incompetence. Do it right or stand down.

No, all is not fair. There are laws that govern war, and this is a war crime if they did have any knowledge that children might be there.

Yes, he is a disgusting human – to think that the actions of adults in a given country justifies the killing of children in the same country is a disgusting thought. The whole concept of paying for the 'sins of the father' is abhorrent – those kids did nothing. You may say that they will grow up to be like their adults – but you can't know that. They could have been the ones to grow up and see that the ways of the past are wrong, and try and change them – but now other children there can be taught by their adults that the Americans hate them, that we are out to get them, and point to the dead kids as proof of how evil we are. Every time we do something like that we only justify the people that want to fight us.

I understand that we are fighting the most difficult type of war – not against a country, but an ideology. An idea is not so easy to kill as a government or military – so long as one is left that believes in the idea, and any amount of evidence exists to support the idea, it will be taught to others and spread. Since we can't possibly kill everyone that believes the idea that Americans are evil, it would be best to only kill the ones actually taking up arms against us, and in doing so, stop providing proof that the idea is right by killing innocents. If this is done, we slow or stop the spread of the idea by removing the evidence supporting it, at the same time, removing those who already believe it so fully as to be violent about it, until the number approaches (though may never reach) zero.
