June was worst month for Army suicides, statistics show

More U.S. soldiers killed themselves last month than in recent Army history, according to Army statistics released Thursday, confounding officials trying to reverse the grim trend.

The statistics show that 32 soldiers killed themselves in June, the highest number in a single month since the Vietnam era. Twenty-one of them were on active duty while 11 were in the National Guard or Army Reserve in an inactive status. Seven of those soldiers killed themselves while serving in Iraq and Afghanistan, according to the Army numbers.

I am aware that this thread is old, but I found USMC Forever to be quite fascinatingly indoctrinated. To spew the same nonsense rhetoric so many combat arms soldiers seem to be so fond of is evidence of a phenomenon that I would like to study sociologically. It is truly remarkable how they produce these kinds of people and I would like to learn this secret.

A look at statistical findings (which are beyond moot, conclusive findings) will show that indeed there is an almost double incidence of suicide among veterans compared to that of the rest of the population. In fact, if you take all of the veterans (active duty and discharged combined) of all of the men and women who have worn uniforms of service and gone to Iraq or Afghanistan (again both campaigns combined) more than 10 times the number of them who died in the line of duty have successfully killed themselves.

The demographic most harmed by this plight is obviously veterans and service members. Now to add insult to injury. You are actually bickering over who is more elite which is quite possibly the most asinine false dichotomy I have ever seen in my 29 years and your enemies are laughing at you for it. All service members are clearly severely indoctrinated and none as much as the Marine Corps. It is obvious that a narrow world view is among the many issued items for a marine. You members of the army targeted by his rhetoric should embrace everything he has to say about you. Continue to question orders, reach an enlightened state of disillusionment regarding your service, but please, don't hurt yourselves. Call 1-800-273-TALK.

For future reference, it is probably best to completely ignore idiots like him, that is the surest way to marginalize his bullying stupidity. Whether you agree with the war or not, our young generation of warriors are indoctrinated through a perversion of altruistic fervor. At the very core, this is honorable and courageous even if the war is illegal. It is a tragic situation when 18 of them commit suicide daily and about as many are homeless.

Now to address an idiot directly. As a sociologist working to correct the epidemic of veteran suicide and homelessness, I do far more than a marine sniper to make our society better. The truth is, nobody needs you or likes you. Your wife will probably cheat on you and your children will probably grow up lying to you if indeed they are actually yours. To top it all off, once you realize how hopelessly stupid you are for being so brainwashed, you will probably join the statistics. It takes a far more elite mind to earn a PhD than to make it through sniper school. I doubt you would be able to, in fact, I bet you would quit. Thank you for giving me inspiration for my doctoral thesis. Note that somewhere in America, someone is laughing at you and has no respect for your status as a professional tough guy. Besides, the army has guys who jump from airplanes.

You are all self-absorbed morons. Why don't you stick up for the USA and quit slamming each other's service orientations. Both branches are fighting to protect us from the unholy terrorists who think nothing of harming their own people. We should all pull together to rid this world of the scourge of terrorism. Bless the young men who took their lives and pray for their families and what they lost.

USMC, you're right, those who take their lives are cowards. But you're gonna have cowards in every unit, no matter what branch. The Marines are not elite. You have elite units among you but you're not elite. Its good you have pride in your Corps but you should show some respect for other branches as well. Its just ignorant to think that out of all the combat units in the US Military, that one branch is completely better than all the others in every aspect. The Marines have pouges too. I was an airborne infantryman with the 82nd Airborne Division and I think that as far as combat efficiency goes, nobody compares to the 82nd. But I respect those who try, including the Marines. So you can curse and insult everybody, and praise and commend yourself as much as you'd like but it sounds like the Marine Corps has a huge case of insecurity. As far as our Generals are concerned... i think if you're not an infantry officer you aint s$#t, but Gen. Patreaus from the ARMY is the one whos been getting the huge command nods here lately.

Also, if the Marines are so great, then why does the Army run operations in EVERY war? I have many soldiers in my unit that have crossed over from the Navy (Marines) because they wanted more out of their career.

Listen gents, we are only commenting on the few who killed themselves because they are weak. Not the whole Army, Jesus no wonder you all can't follow orders in the field, heck you all can't read and comprehend either. You losers say it anyway you want but, if you kill yourself then you have a weak mind period, so stop the bleeding heart crap. Maybe you losers need to change your recruiting motto from 'We take anyone between the ages of 8 and 80 and if you can't walk we can drag you" and go with a new motto. Ask anyone and they will tell you if you rank the Army out of all the services, you are on the bottom looking up. Hey, you people give anybody a beret in the Army, even the Admin. techs get one. I guess that if you go to the bathroom and take a dump and while wiping your face your fingers don't breakthrough the toilet paper, you are beret worthy. What a tragedy and a joke, get a life you MALL RATS!!!!!!!

USMC Forever.... Did you know that the deployment time for a soldier is more than twice as long as that of a jar-head? I would be a much happier soldier if I had only a 6 month deployment time. Do 18 at a time and tell me you don't feel like losing you mind sometime.

God bless all who serve. Everyone else, shut the #### up!

USMC forever.... I think its ashame that you don't have the decency to realize that you just insulted your own kind. I have plenty of respect for the USMC... do I think there are units within the USMC that are ate up.. sure. Just like the Army. It has stellar units, and it has units that are ate up. You're right... not everyone in the Army fights... but some do. But you being you decided not to show them respect and lump them in with everyone else in the Army. Lets not forget, it was the 101st/82nd/1stID/Rangers, and other units who took Europe in WWII. Hows about Fallujah... the Army took it 1st with infantry from the 82nd. Then an ate up unit from the Marines assumed command... lost it... and had to get it back. So don't lump our ate up units in with our stellar ones and show some respect. Do I like the Marines... no... helll no. But I respect them. You should return the favor. Airborne

Chris from Alabama, I didn't insult anyone except those who take their own lives because they are weak, period. I am in the Marine Corps and not the Army, there is a huge difference. We kick Butt and you get yours kicked. We follow orders and you question them. Our generals know when to keep their mouths shut, your generals are forced to retire because they cannot. The Marine Corps is a very special elite unit, there is nothing special about the Army, just a massive undiciplined mob that shoots at anything it can before identifying it. Hey look Dogfaces this is the deal, WHEN YOU ARE THE BEST F***K ALL THE REST.

The US Military pouring anti-depressants down the throats of many of the US soldiers in Afghanistan leads in my opinion to a much greater possibility and incidence of severe PTSD. Amplifying battle zone memory's which anti-depressant drugs do when taken in a battle zone is the exact opposite what is healthy for that soldiers mental health.

I also believe this article WAS ABOUT THE ARMY and USMC was commenting. I must agree with the difference concerning the dicipline between the 2 branches is very considerable at the very least. Most articles I read about some thing bad happening occurs mostly with the U.S. Army. Heck, their Generals are Undiciplined and don't know when to keep their flaps shut!!!!!!!

Again Radical, you dont make sense. And they probaly killed themselves because the saw things in combat that they just could not take. Vietnam and WW2 veterans still have nightmares and have trouble getting over what they went threw in combat. lets see you go and fight people that would kill themselves just to get you and the man next to you. I bet you would come home clinging to your mothers leg and sucking on your thumb.

No Shifty they were weak. Military men are trained specifically to deal with the horror of WAR and if they show weakness, they are taken out of the equation for rehab. I did 2 tours in Afganistan and 1 tour in Iraq as a sniper and I have seen the worst and ugly side of WAR. Combat is very scary and will make you soil your shorts at times but, survival is the name of the game and the Marines are probably the best trained large force in the world second to none.
I just can't see what kind of soldier would sacrifice himself in lieu of battle. I personally think that is the Cowardly way out and if it is my time to die, I will do it in a big way on the battlefield making sure I take as many Bast***s with me to hell!!! Then I will kick their @sses there also. That is way of a true warrior, the proud, the few, the Marines!!!!!!

Before you keep going on and on about how cowardly Army personnel are, you might want to read the article at the link below to see that the Marines are facing record numbers of attempted and successful suicides as well. The Marine Corps' number of suicides per 100,000 people was higher than the Army's, Navy's and Air Force's last year. The article was just last month. It is not good news any way you look at it.
