Photo Spotlight: Enjoying a swim in Kabul

Afghan men spend a sunny day at a Kabul pool swimming, diving and sunning themselves. Swimming was one of the many sports banned under Taliban rule, although women are still not allowed to swim in public.

Before the Soviet Union collapsed in Afghanistan we had nice, clean and many swimming pools across the country, due to 30 years war in Afghanistan, everything has been destroyed, since the US led war against the Taliban,I barely see any effort toward reconstructions, employement, and educations,as Afghans are more in needs of Food and security

Mohammad A Dar, You really need to spend some time getting to know Americans. The life of an American woman is nothing like you describe.

Women in the western culture, Loved, Work eight hours a day, get pregnant, have babies. raise babies, while working eight hours a day, keep the hose clean, now the man likes another young girl, goes with her. What a liberty for the women with all the rights and all the load,. Men have it made in the liberated way, having absolved themselves from their duties and preach others to do the same. They deserve not to be called men but the snake oil salesmen.

Women in the US still don't get the same pay for the same work as men. So don't criticize other cultures while your own still doesn't promote equity!

I say once again, these "luxuries" in Kabul is what's driving the rest of the country against the gov't and Nato. The rest of the country has no food or water, and these guys have Western-style swimming pools.

Iraq Paramedic. I agree. Send your sister there to start it.

It would be really great if the men for whose villages we are digging wells, building roads and putting in electricity and modern plumbing, schools, hospitals and communications would not shoot us in the back or plant bombs in the road to blow us up after waving at us or shaking our hands or offering us tea. They don't seem to understand how offensive that is. Evidently the Golden Rule is not part of their culture. I can understand why they would not want us or our values there and would rather live in the 7th Century but don't try to be friendly at the same time.

That would be too much of a culture shock. Lets focus on getting a functioning government that the Afghans believe in that culturally fits (discrimination and such forth existent, but majority approved) then after some prosperity, advocate for reforms. Remember, it's easier to accept new ideas when you're content rather than when you're agitated.
