Whatever happened to bin Laden?

Osama bin Laden - remember him? Where is he, and is the U.S. getting closer to killing or capturing him?

Those are the questions hovering over several recent developments in the Afghanistan war: the capture of Afghan Taliban military leader Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar,  the killing of two key Taliban commanders  and an increase in drone attacks.

But several authorities on the eight-year Afghanistan war say no one should expect to see bin Laden in handcuffs anytime soon.

“No, I don’t think we’re getting any closer,” says Stephen Tanner, author of “Afghanistan: A Military History from Alexander the Great to the War against the Taliban."

Tanner says the ISI, Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence Agency, knows where bin Laden is hiding, but is not ready to say.

“We got to make a deal with Pakistan because I’m convinced that he’s [bin Laden] protected by the ISI,” Tanner says.

Tanner says that rogue elements within the ISI - if not the Pakistani government - may be using bin Laden as a “trump card” to exert leverage over the United States. Tanner says that Pakistani leaders are concerned that the U.S. will draw closer to India, Pakistan’s chief rival.

Flashing the bin Laden trump card will insure that the U.S. will continue to send aid to Pakistan because it considers it a bulwark against radical Islam, Tanner says. Without the bin Laden trump card, though, Pakistan would be in danger of being abandoned by the U.S., Tanner says.

“I just think it’s impossible after all this time to not know where he is. The ISI knows what’s going on in its own country,” Tanner says. “We’re talking about a 6-foot-4-inch Arab with a coterie of bodyguards.”

Even if the U.S. draws a bead on bin Laden, he won’t be captured alive, says Thomas Mockatis, author of, “Osama bin Laden: A Biography.”

Mockatis says bin Laden has bodyguards who are tasked with shooting him if his capture seems imminent.

“Killing bin Laden would not be a good thing,” Mockatis says. “He’s already a hero. Killing bin Laden would just create one more martyr.”

Many in the Arab world wouldn’t even believe reports that bin Laden had been killed, Mockatis says. They would dismiss the news as CIA propaganda and any photographs of bin Laden’s body as fabrications.

Killing bin Laden is important, but what’s more vital is the ongoing U.S. campaign to “constrict” al Qaeda’s operation, Mockatis says. The U.S. has become more successful at taking away al Qaeda’s safe havens, their ability to move agents and finance operations around the globe.

“It’s a grinding down process, the way you deal with organized crime,” Mockatis says. “You constantly keep the pressure on.”

That pressure may have led to several purported bin Laden sightings, says Ivan Kenneally, an assistant professor at Rochester Institute of Technology in New York who teaches courses on American foreign policy and war and the state.

Some of those alleged sightings have placed bin Laden in Chitral, Pakistan, the northwest region of the country. One bin Laden tip from last fall was credible enough that the U.S. military and Pakistani special forces cordoned off  an area and kept it under 24-hour surveillance by drones, Kenneally says.

“There has been more general information that bin Laden is moving about North Waziristan, complicating his detection by constantly moving back and forth over the border between Afghanistan and Pakistan,” Kenneally says.

Finding bin Laden might not come down to super-sleuthing or aggressive military action, says William Martel, associate professor of international security studies at Tufts University’s Fletcher School in Massachusetts.

“You need a healthy dose of luck to actually produce the capture of someone like that who doesn’t want to be captured,” says Martel, also author of “Victory in War: Foundations of Modern Military Policy.”

Martel, like others interviewed for this blog post, says that bin Laden is probably still alive.

It may actually be better if bin Laden isn’t captured, Martel says. The debate over handling bin Laden in captivity would be explosive.

“Do we read him his rights; do we run him through a military tribunal or civilian courts?” Martel says. “Capturing him would pose more problems than not.”

To read some of these respones is not only sad but shocking. It is a reflection of a
country in denial....and an attitude than, if it doesn't change, will destroy us.
A lot of people in this country simply refuse to believe that George Bush blew it....
Well he did....He was re-elected because he was able to divert America's attention away
from the fact that he had not tracked Bin Laden down and placed America's attention squarely on Iraq using a pack of lies to do it....And it worked to perfection!!!
Not only is Bush responsible for not nailing Bin Laden but destroying the U. S. economy
in the process....There are facts that cannot be denied. Bin Laden is very much alive!
The attempted bombing of the Delta Airlines' Plane in Detroit is proof enough. Although
training was provided by Bin Laden's operatives in Yemen, he was behind the plot.
Another fact that cannot be denied....The U. S. has special operations forces that can
find Bin Laden. Never believe that we cannot find him and kill him. We haven't gotten
Bin Laden yet because of political reasons. What those reasons are will never be told
to the public. Only when another attack occurs that spills American blood on American
soil wil the public become outraged enough to demand his head on a pole.
As for me, I am a former Marine. Find him.....capture him.....tie him to a pole and turn
a flame thrower on him and film it! Make sure that every TV station in the Arab World
sees that tape. Make him a martyr? Send him to hell.....When we truly begin a fight
on terrorism without political restrictions tying our military personnel's hands....progress
will truly be made. Not Until.....Not Until....

If Bin Laden is still alive and he is captured, his sentence could be to undergo sexual re-assignment surgery then be sent to live in a country where women are denied human rights and repressed.

I thought way back when all this war on terrorism started it was stated that any individual or country that harbors, aids, hides, etc an individual could find themselves a target. So now Pakistan is hiding him to use as a trumph card and we're negotiating with them? Have we lost the vision?

Ask Cheney, I'll bet he knows. He was privy to all intel in the prior admin. Bin Laden is a Saudi funded, Pakistan ISI protected, resident in Azad Kashmir with full access to medical services.. I was once told in Karachi that the Saudi Royal family pays some $50mm a year to keep Bin Laden away from the ignominy of a US prison and an inevitable spotlight on those who wish to remain anonymous..

Why would the United States ever want to capture Bin Laden? He truly is a CIA asset and the official reason we are looking high and low in every country where he is not. We have to go hunt down and smoke out Al Qaeda in Afghanistan, Al Qaeda in Iraq, Al Qaeda in Iran, Al Qaeda in Yemen...and any other country rich in natural gas and oil reserves...

When I first heard about False Flag Operations I thought these people were crazy and Un-American. Now after nine years of this mess I see they are right.

Bin Laden is dead. But to comment on rolf's remark, "If there was less emphasis on god it the political rhetoric, maybe the Muslim fundamentalists would have less of an argument calling our presence in the middle east a crusade." It is our government's removal of God from our country that has brought all of this upon us. Not just this, but all the other trouble we see in our country. Even the muslims fear the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. I think the fundamentalists would say it is a crusade simply because they want to bring about judgement. But God is the only one who can bring the final judgement upon the world. This country has gotten so far away from God, it is no wonder there is so much turmoil. I am glad I can rest in him. Even if a terrorist slaughtered me like an animal, they cannot have my spirit. It belongs eternally to God and death has no sting and the grave has no power. God Bless our Troops and America.

Osama has been killd long time ago. USA and Pakistan both knows about this. It is NOT politically correct to tell the world that he has been killed by Americans long time ago. Keeping him alive makes more sence, as you can show the world that war on terror is still alive. The worst of worst Osama is out there. By saying Osama is alive USA and Paksitan can achieve alot. Every bad thing that if happens can easily be blamed on Osama. Actually this generation of humans will witness that Oosama will become the longest ever living Human in entire history of Humanity. I can guess probabbly in 2090 we will still hear tape recordings and videos of Osama telling muslims to do Jihad.

Increase the odds of finding him by sending them all back to look for him. If they find them...great! Then you can come back legally. If they don't find him...oh well! At least we cleaned house. Created some jobs, reduced the burden on our healthcare & welfare systems, made room in our schools systems. Oh yeah....and maybe we can let our god back into our country too. The U.S. should demand access to the caves of Damadola, in Pakistan. Even if Bin Laden is no longer there, there may be some clues and local witnesses left. Those caves look like an ideal hideout. No one should trust the Pakistani Secret Service. But there are many local people who might talk. This may not be the only cave labyrinth in Central Asia. There are countless hideouts left after many wars. Only local people know where they are, and perhaps some Russians do.

Why don’t we stop the aid to Pakistan and help India to wage war on Pakistan and destroy this phony country for good? This would be our “trump card”. I don’t think the fear of Muslims that they would make a hero out of this jerk and creating one more martyr is relevant here. These Muslims have already thousands of shrines for their heroes, what’s one more.
Or is it because the military clan doesn’t want to find him because then the war is over and they’re out of business?

Even if ISI is doing those attacks theirselves, just to show the US, that we have no link with Taliban or Osama or have no information about him, Its not possible that ISI will plant attacks in populated areas, or areas which can lead to huge damage. I feel Iran will have better information of his location, then Pakistan.

@Dan. As long as we need oil, we need a full ally in the Middle East. Israel is that ally. We know we can base our military there if it all hits the fan. The less we import oil, the less we depend on the Middle East, the less we will have a military interest, the less we will be hated there. Track the status of Israel, Palestine and America's image in the Middle East versus US foreign policy. Under Republicans with strong pro-Israeli policies, all three are worse off. Under Democrats, with more middle ground policies, all three are better off. Carter and Clinton both made amazing progress. Nixon, Reagan, Bush and Bush II all saw escalating violence. For the good of all, we need to follow a middle ground, high involvement policy. Two states, 1967 borders, all sides accountable for their actions. This policy has a very strong consensus around the world.

I believe that George Bush permitted/conspired with Bin Laden to allow 9/11 to happen in anticipation of his own dictatorial goals. Therefore, it would be unwise for the US to capture him if he is dead then it is important to keep the fear of another attack over the american people's heads. Why else would on the morning of 9/11 would Bush remain reading in a classroom and then permit Bin Laden's relatives to be flown out of our country. Maybe if we stoped sending aid to these countries we could use the money to create jobs of border patrol and air control and strenghten our own country to prevent such attacks after all if they have no funds its hard to finance an attack so we are funding our own demise.

This guy has been dead ever since they used the thermobaric bombs on that tora bora mountain holdout. No one wants to admit he's dead.. the US needs him for the archenemy, Al Qaeda needs him for the leader.. so they can't "find" him.

If he was still alive, we'd have seen a video in the last 3-4 years.. but he's not.. can't make a dead man walk. Sooner people realize this the better off we'll be..

How can these terrorists even be tried in a civilian court. They are not U.S. citizens and are not privilegded to the same rights we have as U.S. citizens. How would we ever find a jury of their peers anyway. If you find their peers, they probably need to be arrested too. It is not right that we have to foot the bill to give them a trial. Save the tax payers money and just put a bullet in their head. Who cares about martyrdom? They already see themselves as martyrs anyway and are proud of it. We definately do not need to put them in our prisons with some of our worst criminals only for them to infect them with their beliefs and ideals on terrorism, America, and Israel. Not too smart Obama. You are just making our prison system a breeding ground for terrorist.

What were we thinking?? Check out "Kryptos", The CIA Sculpture built in the early 1990's when this technology was being mastered. The CIA left a message for all of us to decrypt. The question is no longer finding bin Landen. During World War Two Hitler was killing off by killing off his war machine. So the real issue at hand is larger than bin Landen himself, it's finding a solution to the al Qaeda problem. By killing off al Qaeda you kill off bin Landen.

I totally agree, killing Bin Laden would only empower the radical Islamists.

Publicly, they may refute the claims, but they would go into desperation mode and step up attacks on pro-Western targets.

So many people forget, martyrdom is highest honor for any public figure. Look at Cuba, Fidel has become a feable old man, while Che remains as a symbol to the young and old alike in Cuba.

The best way to defeat the extremists is by marginalizing them. If we continue to rebuild their infrastructure, educate them and treat them as equals, the disenfranchised fringe will look more favorably to the US and our allies.

As satisfying as it would be to have Bin Laden's head on a stick, the truth is that he's pretty much irrelevant these days. Aside from putting out the occasional audio tape filled with the same rants as ever, he's basically a non-factor, yesterday's news.

If we were to kill him tomorrow and exhibit his body on TV like we did with Saddam's sons to prove they were dead, it wouldn't make any real difference in Afghanistan or Yemen or Iraq. If we never find him and he keeps cranking out the occasional audio tape for the next 20 years before he dies of natural causes, it won't make any difference. The true believers in Al-Qaeda don't need him for inspiration, and they wouldn't be dissuaded by his death.

I hope we find him and kill him ASAP. But whether we do so or not shouldn't be used as a gauge of our success in the struggle against islamic extremism. A much more relevant measurement is the public opinion polls in muslim nations showing public support for Al-Qaeda dropping to new lows. That's where the real battle will be won.

The governtment isn't able to function, "currupt free" without our involvement, at least not yet. And if the pakastani government acutually has his where-abouts, then they won't hand him over until they have met certain goals and can protect their own interests without our aid or backlash. And right now they have our cooperation and funding, soldiers, pubilicity, and even some of our allies resources as well. And the terrorists are job security.

It's really sad to me that a country which beat Hitler in Europe never seriously gave a second thought as to whether he was alive or dead, as a foreign policy matter. Even if he had gone to South America from which he used propaganda to rally old Nazis, we were smart enough not to care. His continued existence was a matter for writers of fiction and fantasy.

Here, you have a man who never even ran a country, not even Afghanistan. Every big attack on the US was attributed to him, even though we had a lot more enemies than bin Laden. Why, the anthrax attack (which was so evil it had to be attributed to a cabal of alQaeda and Saddam) turned out to be domestic.

Paying the slightest bit of attention to this guy (in the Guy Fawkes sense of the word) shows how far we have fallen as a society, into a magical thinking which children and primitives are prone to – through no fault of their own. The fault my dear Brutus is in ourselves.

People from other planets have been here for long periods of time. Some of those people are us. Some of us aren't. Our memory was purposely with held to our SubConscious. Check out STEVEN GREER and DAVID WILCOCK. It has almost gotten to the point when Obama (The Puppet) and the Leaders of the Galactic Federation of Light inform all to delete your fear of death, which does not exist. We (Americans) have been forced to believe this in order to be slaves to those in Power. The Illuminati is almost totally gone. Steven Greer will get this information. Help spread the word and do some more research!....Most other countries are totally aware for the Shift that has started and the end Result. You must be informed or you will be shocked. The 2nd Law of Thyrodynamics has been a lie to us our whole lives. It does not exist. ORGONE is the element that gives us FREE ENERGY. I wouldn't be surprised at all if he were already dead. Back in 2001, I think I remember him being on dialysis or something of the sort. Not too familiar with the technology, but it's been over 8 years – he very well could have died due to health problems, independent of the efforts to capture/kill him, which would have only added to his chances of death.

The best case for any government is a scared people. If you can get all your people to be scared of the same thing, you control your people...... the "War on terror" will never end.... No matter what we do...... There will always be nuts that will try do destroy us. Don't blame all Muslims for the craziness of some... If we make this a religious war we will loose. There is a lot more of them then there is of us.... And their numbers are getting greater every day.... If we can help minimize poverty and despair in those countries, the fundamentalism will fade away. I am a Christian, but I will not mix politics with religion….The state should do the same…… If there was less emphasis on god it the political rhetoric, maybe the Muslim fundamentalists would have less of an argument calling our presence in the middle east a crusade.

I know it sounds crazy but is it possible the USA already knows where he is? Lets not forget in WW2 they helped many Nazi's escape for whatever reason. They were just as bad or worse than Bin Laden. Perhaps they figure a crippled figurehead is better than someone who can actually move around? Perhaps if they know where he is they figure they can gather intelligence by listening in, and that's more important than revenge. And no, I'm not one to believe most conspiracy theories, but this makes some sense to me.
