Whatever happened to bin Laden?

Osama bin Laden - remember him? Where is he, and is the U.S. getting closer to killing or capturing him?

Those are the questions hovering over several recent developments in the Afghanistan war: the capture of Afghan Taliban military leader Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar,  the killing of two key Taliban commanders  and an increase in drone attacks.

But several authorities on the eight-year Afghanistan war say no one should expect to see bin Laden in handcuffs anytime soon.

“No, I don’t think we’re getting any closer,” says Stephen Tanner, author of “Afghanistan: A Military History from Alexander the Great to the War against the Taliban."

Tanner says the ISI, Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence Agency, knows where bin Laden is hiding, but is not ready to say.

“We got to make a deal with Pakistan because I’m convinced that he’s [bin Laden] protected by the ISI,” Tanner says.

Tanner says that rogue elements within the ISI - if not the Pakistani government - may be using bin Laden as a “trump card” to exert leverage over the United States. Tanner says that Pakistani leaders are concerned that the U.S. will draw closer to India, Pakistan’s chief rival.

Flashing the bin Laden trump card will insure that the U.S. will continue to send aid to Pakistan because it considers it a bulwark against radical Islam, Tanner says. Without the bin Laden trump card, though, Pakistan would be in danger of being abandoned by the U.S., Tanner says.

“I just think it’s impossible after all this time to not know where he is. The ISI knows what’s going on in its own country,” Tanner says. “We’re talking about a 6-foot-4-inch Arab with a coterie of bodyguards.”

Even if the U.S. draws a bead on bin Laden, he won’t be captured alive, says Thomas Mockatis, author of, “Osama bin Laden: A Biography.”

Mockatis says bin Laden has bodyguards who are tasked with shooting him if his capture seems imminent.

“Killing bin Laden would not be a good thing,” Mockatis says. “He’s already a hero. Killing bin Laden would just create one more martyr.”

Many in the Arab world wouldn’t even believe reports that bin Laden had been killed, Mockatis says. They would dismiss the news as CIA propaganda and any photographs of bin Laden’s body as fabrications.

Killing bin Laden is important, but what’s more vital is the ongoing U.S. campaign to “constrict” al Qaeda’s operation, Mockatis says. The U.S. has become more successful at taking away al Qaeda’s safe havens, their ability to move agents and finance operations around the globe.

“It’s a grinding down process, the way you deal with organized crime,” Mockatis says. “You constantly keep the pressure on.”

That pressure may have led to several purported bin Laden sightings, says Ivan Kenneally, an assistant professor at Rochester Institute of Technology in New York who teaches courses on American foreign policy and war and the state.

Some of those alleged sightings have placed bin Laden in Chitral, Pakistan, the northwest region of the country. One bin Laden tip from last fall was credible enough that the U.S. military and Pakistani special forces cordoned off  an area and kept it under 24-hour surveillance by drones, Kenneally says.

“There has been more general information that bin Laden is moving about North Waziristan, complicating his detection by constantly moving back and forth over the border between Afghanistan and Pakistan,” Kenneally says.

Finding bin Laden might not come down to super-sleuthing or aggressive military action, says William Martel, associate professor of international security studies at Tufts University’s Fletcher School in Massachusetts.

“You need a healthy dose of luck to actually produce the capture of someone like that who doesn’t want to be captured,” says Martel, also author of “Victory in War: Foundations of Modern Military Policy.”

Martel, like others interviewed for this blog post, says that bin Laden is probably still alive.

It may actually be better if bin Laden isn’t captured, Martel says. The debate over handling bin Laden in captivity would be explosive.

“Do we read him his rights; do we run him through a military tribunal or civilian courts?” Martel says. “Capturing him would pose more problems than not.”

OSAMA is dead!!!! if you look at all the clues if points to it, during the bomings of afhganistan they had videos of him walkin around and you can see the bombs being dropped in the back ground. Between us and England we shelled them for 90 days straight, we were bound to hit him if he was that close. On 9-11 he was in Dubei at the american hospital getting treatment of severe attack that he had so the man was deffinalty not well at all. Oh yes the once video tape to now audio tape he was never camera shy till now so why the sudden change??? all the terrorist like to be seen and heard. But lets say he is alive the man is very smart and is most likely hiding in a country to where we cant get to him like syria or like someone said earlier in occupied Kashmir or one of the many other "stans" they got around there but really tho OSAMA IS DEAD ITS ALL ABOUT THE OIL. They now have bases in Iraq and KBR just got awarded a 2.3 billion dollar Logcap 4 contract we now are based in the middle east and we are gonna be here for a while.

HE IS DEAD , don't anyone get it. He has not been seen since the bombings of the the Afgan Mountain region during Bush's time. He is under a mountain somewhere never to be seen again. If he wasn't dead he would be putting out videos like he always did.

I think Bin Laden is the antichrist and the end is in sight, I'm looking forward to it. But realistically the world should build a bridge and get over it. More lives have been lost trying to find him than were lost in his apparent inital attack on 911, do the math

The reason Bush didn't care about binLaden is because his one and only goal was to finish the job his Daddy failed to do... Get Saddam Hussein. It took the atrocity of 9/11 for him to have an excuse to go back over. I hope Jr burns in hell for the lives he's destroyed. He deserves nothing less.

Have you thought about this: I find it amazing that just because it is said in the news people believe it instantly. Does anyone here have any critical thinking that this guy may not even exist and that the media is a tool used to justify illegal wars? The media is full of mass manipulation and people go along like a herd of cattle to the slaughter, engaged in talking and wasting time with the lies they have been told. Consider who owns the media and who benefits from the wars and you will see who the culprits are in truth. The USA surely has not benefited from the wars and our foreign policy is in need of some serious change. One of our "allies" on the other side of the world is NOT our ally.

And if our current president is going to avenge 9/11 he should start with Cheney, Rove and Bush and the rest of the goonies running our country then. That is where 9/11 came from and until that truth comes out...its nothing more than a game to fool the citizens.

Osama Bin Ladin has been dead for a number of years. It is remarkable to me that people continue to believe he is alive and well. Does anyone question where these tapes come from? The media continues to state that tapes "emerged," but from where? Tapes come into media outlets but no one can track where the tape comes from. Half of them are probably falsely planted for the continuing support of the American People so the the U.S. Government can continue its agenda in the Middle East. I have never actually heard his voice before since there is always a broadcaster giving an outline of what was said as opposed to actually letting the tape play. Another question is how come the FBI website does not state that he has any connection with the events of 9/11. He is not wanted for that, he is wanted for the bombings in Kenya back in 1998. Can anyone say hmmmmm... Plain and simple, he was once alive but is now dead. There is no concrete proof that he had anything to do with the events of 9/11.

People say bin Laden is dead/alive, but my question is, what is the point of the eight year war? If doesn't matter if Bin Laden is dead or alive, why are we over in Iraq and Afghanistan? Why don't we just leave and let the civilians rebuild their countries? I know that may sound silly, but why are wasting taxpayer dollars on fighting insurgents? Crime is crime; we have it over here in the U.S. Everyone will be surprised how calm it will be if we leave. There will be insurgency still, just not as much.

As o said, we need to focus our money over here. I am currently unemployed (laid off actually) and want to know where all the good jobs are. Every company I know is losing money and cannot afford to hire people.

I kno the CIA MUST suspect the same thing. They have strategically decided to occupy West pakistan and afghanistan, and stabilize them. India on the east of kashmir is super fortified. The US military will never be allowed to get near kashmir by pakistan since it's such a big issue in the region. Osama bin Laden is NOT rellevent any more. However I would dump Pakistan and put it in the same boat as Iran and Afghanistan Then I would kiss India and let the other three contries rot. I would spend all my energy and money on keeping the three isolated and hound them with world agencies and even sanctions. I would not spend money on a war that cannot be won. I would bring troops home and use all I had to contain the three contries and let them worry about what contry the idiot is in. You can be sure that he will stop money going to the contries that protect him because nobody wants him. He only becomes rellevent if the Americans want that. And they may as they usually have an agenda somewhere that will cause a future uprise of some sort, just like they did with bin Laden.

If I read his obituary in a Pakistani newspaper back in early 2002 so did the CIA station chief in Islamabad. Benizir Bhutto stated in no uncertain terms that he died in 2001 in one of her last television interviews with David Frost. That's probably one of the things that got her murdered. Bin Laden has been dead for about 9 years. He's just as valuable dead as alive to US foreign policy as long as a significant number of the America Sheeple believe he is alive.

What i dont get! Is how do you trial men who are responsible the 9/11 attacks in a civil courts. As if they had any rights as an U.S. citizen. That to me makes no sense on US soil. While willing and ready to deport a mexican immigrant back to Mexican. This immigrants just wants to make an honest living and support their family. So tell me, why we rather give Terrorists a second chance in a" kangaroo" court with "Rights to a fair trial". When the immigrants has done no crime. in constrast to the Terrorist who just want to see the world burn. but only arresting the hard working immigrant making an honest living with no fair trial.

And for the record, why are at war to begin with. How do you justify the irresponsiblity and incompentence of the USA for not tightening up airlines security to begin with first place. So when your attacked for being neglience and lazy you, got to get even. Whose fault is it again. In domestic violence, "fighting does not solve anything"then why do we have wars. I have been told that Bin Laden is very much alive and is moving all the time. The U.S. Special Ops has had Bin Laden in the sniper cross hairs 3 times in the last year. But since Bin Laden is what you call a "High Value Target" The President or Commander in Chief has to give the order to take the shot. So by the time the sniper radio's his superior, and his superior radio's Washington, and someone in Washington picks up, it's to late Bin Laden gets away. It just has to make you wonder if the war is being fought by our young men and women on the ground, or by Washington a whole world away?

The question is not, "Is he dead?" The question is, "What kind of dead is he?"

A man's heart can stop beating, his lungs stop bringing in air, he can still be alive in the hearts, minds and nightmares of others. A man's heart can continue to beat, he can be walking around talking to others, never making a difference to the world. This man is dead.

Want to end all this animosity once and for all? Pull our support for Israel. There are no special interests (i.e. oil, manufactured products, etc.) that necessitate us being there. Supporting Israel onlly brings animosity from across the world especially with Israel's behavior and noncompliance with treaties. They public doesn't feel we need to be there (perhaps except the Jewish-American demographic). If our congressman weren't lobbied/bribed by contributions from AIPAC, we could end this dangerous knot with Israel.

I can't believe people still think he's alive! The last time we saw pictures of him during the initial Afghan war, he was gaunt, sickly, pale, and was having some serious health issues. These people have a lot of money, they could get anyone in there with his stature and build and get all the plastic surgery in the world to make him look like the real monster. The new pictures of Bin Laden show much younger skin, a strong resemblance, and about 10 years younger than he ever looked. I can't believe anyone in the government thinks this is him and he's alive. Why is it so important to keep him alive in everyone's mind? He's not even worm food by now.

If we ever do catch him, which is doubtful, I say we bring him to NYC to face justice. I'm not talking about some politicized court room drama. I say we free him in Central Park and then call all the radio stations to let everyone know he is there. The people of NY will carry out the justice he deserves

I think he is dead and has been for some time. He was reported to be suffering from kidney disease during the Invasion of Afghanistan and required dialysis. Al Qaida is not about to announce that their "sheikh" died in a bed from kidney failure so they are continuing on as if he is still alive and releasing audio tapes at regular intervals purportedly made by him.

Truthfully believe the guy is dead and has been for a few years. His "videos" stopped and the new ones are all facilitated audio. Wonder if we - as in our government/military - already knows this, or perhaps we just never confirmed his remains. Just my opinion. Otherwise, yeah, guy's in Iran or across the Pakistan border, but his health is likely extremely dire.

President Obama needs to capture or kill Osama Bin Laden, and declare victory in our war against Islamic jihadists.

Otherwise, far too many Americans will accuse President Obama not fighting a real war or not protecting America from Islamic terrorists – even if he has been more successful than President Bush.

I suspect that Osama Bin Laden is already dead! Look at all the video crap he allegedly releases. Same old pictures of him from just after 9/11.
The audio in those release have never been fully authenticated as being Bin Laden's.
I suspect he died of either kidney disease of one of his cronies shot him in the head
    as his captors were nearing.
We should have found him by now.

Bin Laden is secretly forming aa alliance with the islamic ruling party in Iran. Once Iran has developed Nuclear weapons Bin Laden will surface inside Iran. Protected by a nuclear arsenal they will terrorize and threaten Israel and any other nation that opposes them. The only way to stop Bin Laden's plans is to stop Iran now.

First, before discussing whether or not Osama Bin Laden now sleeps with his ancestors, we should go back to finding out what happened on September 11, 2001. So many failures and coincidences on that fateful day led to the destruction of almost three thousand souls, and many more have succumbed subsequently to its effects. Yet the criminal administration saw no need for inquiry and investigation into what happened. As for concrete and steel structures collapsing, in free fall, because of a fire – don't make me laugh. What happened to the alleged Boeing jet that slammed into the Pentagon? Where are those two nine ton engines? What happened to the planed that crashed in Pennsylvania? There was a crater allegedly caused by the plane but nothing larger than a thumb was recovered, including the two nine ton engines. Such coincidences, such oddities. Lastly, why did the forty-seven storey tower known as building #7 World Trade Center collapse hours after the twin towers were reduced to rubble, and the conjurors claim that there was a fire in the basement of #7 WTC. The BBC was reporting the collapse of #7 WTC ahead of it actually coming down. For a country like the USA standing down its military during what any reasonable thinking person would conclude was an attack, for a prolonged period, just does not make sense. George Bush was evidently in on what was to happen since his reaction to hearing the news of the second plane aroused nothing more than a blank stare in that Florida elementary classroom.

i don't understand why you all want this great man dead? a true freedom fighter in the vein of Che Guevara or George Washington should be celebrated. sure he had to kill a few thousand to get his message heard, but you have to break some eggs to make an omelet. if we continue with this war on "terror" we will only further dig our own grave, America can never stand up to a shadow army, which was proven in Vietnam.

Following the demise of the Soviet Union our military industrial complex had to invent the boogeyman, OBL, in order to perpetuate its parasitic relationship with the American Taxpayer. Therefore it is counter to their interest to render this boogeyman null. Why do they even bother with the pretence, they have rendered us impotent to do anything about the situation they've marshaled us into, so they might just as well come clean and reveal their true selves.

The need for resolution of OBL's status is no different than that for any other type of henious individual responsible for major criminal acts. If he is alive, he could be in Pak, Iran, one of the Gulf states, or even Horn of Africa. Given his past reported medical conditions, he must be in fairly regular intensive care, thus large city medical facilities, like Karachi, or even Pak security force medical establishments, may provide some leads. His Taliban head allies, must have a conclusive idea about his last whereabouts; it is unfortunate that the US does not have sole access to the captured head terrorists. During the Iraq war, one of his reported comments, tapes, was that regarding the Sunni-Shia conflict, not a hard core belief ofSunni islamist, potentially this may explain that he may be harbouring in Iran. The best medical facilities are in the Gulf states, a very possible location. Horn of Africa, due to a lack of medical facilities, probably a less likekly location, notwithstanding the fervor for islamists in some of the countries in the area. At least OBL's carcass needs to be fund to put an end to his myth.

He died at the end of 2001 or beginning of 2002 and not enough evidence ever existed to charge him with execution of the 9/11 attacks. Robert Gates said at the very end of 2009 that there hadn't been credible evidence of his existence in years, much less his whereabouts. By 2005, the CIA was disbanding all their overseas operations to "hunt" Bin Laden.

Why can't we just accept that he's dead and any commentary since the time of his death is vague, improperly translated, or forged?

There was never enough evidence for the FBI to charge him with the 9/11 attacks anyway. Look at their Most Wanted... he's not mentioned in the attacks!

Blind nationalism will make us stupid... and what ever happened to that CentGas pipeline???
