Bodies believed to be 'honor killing' victims

KABUL, Afghanistan (CNN) - Four people found dead in a southeastern Afghan compound appear to be victims of an honor killing, a senior U.S. military official said on Friday.

The bodies were discovered during an operation by Afghan and NATO-led forces in Paktia province, a volatile region along the border of Pakistan. NATO's International Security Assistance Force said the bodies of two men and two women were found, with the women bound and gagged, and the U.S. official said the people were shot "execution-style."

An honor killing is a murder carried out by a family or community member against someone thought to have brought dishonor onto them. The U.S. official said it isn't clear whether the dishonor in this case stemmed from accusations of acts such as adultery or even cooperating with NATO forces.

"It has the earmarks of a traditional honor killing," said the official, who added the Taliban could be responsible.

Afghan and NATO officials are investigating the incident, which occurred in the village of Khatabeh in the province's Gardez district. The operation unfolded when Afghan and international forces went to the compound, which was thought to be a site of militant activity. A firefight ensued and several insurgents died, several people left the compound, and eight others were detained.

Paktia is the same province where a military base was the target of an assault that wounded five U.S. soldiers on Thursday, authorities said. Both the U.S. official and a Paktia province spokesman confirmed that a suicide attacker, apparently wearing police garb, carried out the action. The U.S. official said it may never be fully determined if the uniform was stolen or the bomber was a turncoat.

On December 30, a suicide attack on a U.S. base in Afghanistan killed seven CIA officers and a Jordanian army captain. The Pakistani Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack, also on a base in eastern Afghanistan.

The focus of this thread has really gone astray. These are our young men & women going to battle in one of the worlds most dangerous areas and the postings have be reduced to politics.

ALL troops who are fighting terrorist who have been attacking our free world need our support. The terrorist need to understand this behavior will NOT be tolerated. The focus is on protecting our free world, and enabling Afghanistan & Pakistan to live with similar priviledges.

Mud slinging about what violations have occurred in history has NO benefit as we look forward to how we build a better and more equal rights world for future generations. These brave troops are putting their lives on their lines for this purpose. STOP please with politics and historical grudges...let us build a more positive future for this earth.

@ henry- very good. I'm sure that Mexico will be the next stop in saving the world at the expense of the American Taxpayers. I know that Americans are in just as much danger as the Mexicans across the border from the drug cartels, But politicians in states that border Mexico don't seem to want the rest of the country or the world to know, probably afraid it will hurt the tourism industry. Frankly I say stay out of Mexico until the country as a whole decides to become part of the United States of America and can then be divided into 5 smaller states. We can then demand that English will be the official language. No more Cinco de Mayo celebrations, Do you think they will accept my offer? I think they prefer to live in a corrupt, poverty stricken country.

@ Ian- I'm sure that 50 years actually it's now 65 years since the conclusion of WWII may seem like a long time. But you seem to forget that many countries throughout the world have spent that time rebuilding their own counties or fighting wars in Korea and Vietnam in the Cold War Years a era that supposedly came to an end in 1991. During this time many of the countries that were under colonial rule of some European countries have gained their independence. Some people think that these countries are in worse shape now because of countless dictators that have given these countries no stability or direction and many a time they have even refused help from Western Powers. For all middle easterners that consider the United States as the evil empire try and imagine 69 years ago and Japan decides not to bomb Pearl Harbor. Without this attack we may never have entered the war in Europe. Suppose Hitler had conquered Europe, Russia, the middle east, and Africa. Japan had conquered all of Asia. i can bet that the death camps would have extended all the way to India and Billions would have been killed and whole races would have disappeared as would the religion of Islam. So Ian it has not been a conscience effort to ignore these countries it's just that we haven't had the time.

This all sounds just fine, God bless our troops as they go into battle, but we have another problem just in our back door. South of El Paso more terrorist groups known as cartels act, look, smell, dress, kill just the the Taliban. They massacure innocent people just like on January the 30th in Juarez Mexico. No it is just not a mexican problem it is ours too. It is allready in El Paso, Tucson and Phoenix, Chicago, LA, New York and in all the big cities of this country. The mexican President in Juarez Mexico yesterday declared that Juarez was a FAILED CITY. The Mexican Govt. finally admitted it. What is left is for us to admit it too and do something about it before it is too late.

You're right in your observation that Islam is currently the largest and only religion in the worlld that is currently at war with just about every major religion of the world, you forgot the countless numbers of Statues of Buddah they have destroyed. i am surprised that so many blacks have adopted Islam when many muslims were just as guilty for partaking in the slave trade with Europeans. In Africa Muslims are slaughtering countless numbers of blacks each year so that they may regain areas that were held by Muslims hundreds of years ago yet the black communities throughout the world never say a word, Why?

Edwin; You're just lame. Tell me how many mosques Jews and Christians burned down in the last 6 months, 6 years 6 centuries? In Pakistan alone 40 churches were burned in December to the foundation by Muslims seeking to eradicate the "People of the Book" from Muslim lands. Save your breath about Islam being peaceful. @ sweetwatergringo- You claim to know about Curveball and yet you defend Blaire, Bush , Cheney, and Powell in their stupidity and stubbornness. You must know that the US and German intelligence agencies told the President not to pay attention to Curveball because he was a notorious liar whose stories couldn't be trusted.Even after countless inspectors visited Iraq and none could find any signs of weapons of mass destruction Bush ignored the CIA and determined that Curveball was telling the truth and launched us into a costly war that has helped push us into the recession we are in now. This was no gaffe of Bushes this was a deliberate refusal to listen to his Intelligence agencies. Bush and Blair did lie when they said that they didn't know or were never warned about Curveballs penchant for fabricating unreliable information. Yet you blame this on liberal media slandering. By the way I never suggested past civilizations that worshipped various gods that they believed controlled the various functions Earth didn't kill or sacrifice individuals, so don't put words in my mouth. I was merely suggesting that worshipping of something that has more substance and importance to the existence and viability of mankind like the Planet Earth, makes more sense than following the false decrees and superstitions made up by man. When the Bible says that God created humans in his own image what it really means to say is that man created God in the image of humans.

Stalin, Mao,Hitler, Pol Pot just to name a few all in the name of socialism killed millions and currently, Christians are on the receiving end of Muslim persecution. Does the name Idi Amin ring a bell. Muslim Ugandan dictator who killed 300,000 Ugandan Christians while the whole world watched Christians may have done some dumb and nasty things, but that was a long time ago and no where near the magnitude that Muslims and the non-religious have.

We failed these people when we did not include them in our track foward into the future. Now they look at us with a mind that does not comprehend our world here in the West. It blow me away that we let 50 years pass since WW II and never had the smarts to relize this was comming. This is not about religion it is about control and money, Eric you are a Simple son of a bitch and I am sure you will do well at burger king or Mickey Ds but running the big machine is not in the cards for you.

Accept it and relize that we as a society don't wake up to and start to demand solutions we will be the ones being killed. We have a situation out of Control Just llike we did in WW II and we need masive military stirkes, millions of men on the ground, just like D day to stop whomever threatens are way of live. Why do people live in the past? I don't say forget the past because we all can learn from it. We need to concentrate on what is happening today and try and make the world a better place for every human being. Instead of whining and complaining, get up off your ass and out from behind the anonymity of the internet. Speak up. Do something. Say something out loud so people can hear you. No you are a coward. Alone in your negativity and isolation with all the crap you are spewing. Don't think that one person can make a difference? In my lifetime John F, Kennedy and his brother Robert, Martin Luther King, Ghandi, Dali Lama, Nelson Mandela, Pope John Paul II, Mother Teresa and so many other individuals we don't know their names have changed the world by practicing what they preach. They have all suffered in their quest to free and improve the lives of people who have the right to complain about the injustice of our world. Shut up!

Bottom line – this will never end until united states is out of iraq and afghanistan. I have never seen any killings in the name of religion but we need to mind our own business and let them follow their beliefs. A terrorist would be born for every death of a civilian. People don't have money and can get easily employed by militants. They are trained to be killed and why do we have to get in the middle of this mess. Why can't US apologize for our mistakes and get out – we are not spreading peace with military – why can't we follow gandhi and educate people without having to enter someone's land and then try to find the enemies. Let them do what they want to do. How would US like if someone enters our country and decides who has the right to live or die. This will never end and suicide bombings will arrise because for them this is the only tool – they don't have the guns and F15s like we do but they can get so frustrated that they are ready to win without it..Hope we all can understand – we need to end this war by letting them mind their business.

An Iraqi scientist seeking asylum in Germany gave information of the weapons program to the German, American and British authorities. They were able to verify that he had worked in Iraq, so they took him at face value, not knowing that he was exaggerating. Look up "Operation Curveball" for more information. This has been known for many years. It was an unfortunate gaffe on the part of Blair, Bush, et al, but there was nothing nefarious about it. American soldiers have been killing civialians and carrying out punitive missions since the begining of this country, just ask North Korea (punitive means punishment)... You can't sit their and claim someone is the victim of an honor killing without proof. The reporter who wrote this article is a moron who needs to learn more about investigative journalism. That is the problem plaguing the country right now. Too many of the non-thinking type with too much time on your hands and not enough inclination to reason the problem out. Much of the world sees the christian right in our country to be much the same as the regime in Iran or the Taliban. Though they don't perform honor killings, American conservatives kick underage mothers out of the house, exile family for not believing in their religion, they believe the death penalty is righteous retribution, and want to put their commie propaganda on courthouses and schools so that you know the institution which governs your life. Religious conservatives in this will live in shacks or trailers using my hard earned tax dollars to gamble at the casino yet still tell me that glutony is bad and I shouldn't do this or that...?. Religious conservatism, be it christian or muslim, is wrong to it's very core. Just remember Joe Dirt's mom when she says, "is this where you want to be when Jesus comes back?" I am sure both he and Mohammad would disapprove entirely with what is going on in the world. Just remember too that the idiots who come into the middle east to make people belive or live differntly has never worked out historically. What makes anyone think the US will succede now. It's just a waste of good american soldiers fighting a war for Afghan's and Iraqi's who should be fighting themselves. Dead is Dead. Everyone pointing fingers at the religions they aren't a part of and burying their heads in the sand about the misdeeds of their supposed non violent faith. How typical. The central theme of this story is that religion has done more to kill people than save them. If their really was a God don't you think he/she would visit more often. Maybe next time he/she will write its commandments in a material impervious to erosion or the simple tools of man. The one thing that does give man life, EARTH, should be the focus of his prayers and worship. Yet he follows false prophets who put their stain on mankind hundreds if not thousands of years ago. Next time any of you go preaching against BIG GOVERNMENT maybe you should be more concerned about BIG RELIGION. Thank goodness the founding fathers of the United States of America were aware of the destructive and repressive forces of religion and have restrictions for their involvement in the affairs of running the government.

Eric, The entire issue is not America. It is politics, cowardly extremists (Taliban, Republicans, Democrats, Religious leaders, like Sadr, Falwell, Robertson,) who hide behind a wonderful gift call the Holy Q'ran, The Holy Bible, the Constitution and claim it is ok to kill innocents in the name of Allah and God, who convince others like you to hate when hatried just fans th fires. Ah then there are the leaders around the world who dance around the truth...sure they lie, so does the Taliban..so does the Middle East media,, so does Fox and CNN..NONE OF US will ever truly know the truth... but I can tell you that if WE the simple people could ever just talk about reality in these places and in the countries around the world, we would all be shocked to learn how much we are alike. None of us can truly appreciate the horror of real life in Afghanistan and Iraq, Iran, North Korea, the slums of New York, LA, and so on. Two final comments...1)We are taught to love one another. We don't. So why don't we just start with trying to tolerate and understand each other then move forward slowly toward liking each other? 2)There is a difference between governments and the people. As I learned in Croatia...they hated our government...but they loved us as Americans. There is a difference between Taliban, Religious Right, Pro-Life Fanatics and the many races of people that make up our world. It is very difficult in today's world thanks to the media, the religious zealots, the politicians to avoid labeling everyone. I cherish my friends in the Middle East, Asia and Europe for all their differences and for all our similarities. I would welcome your friendship just as much.

Being born in the USA, I am so very proud and thankful. My husband and I have been married 50 years. Always being independent since my siblings were many years younger than I, my father raised me to do the things a son would do, trap, shoot, roof, put siding on houses and my horse, Fannie, blind in one eye so we went down hills sidways with her good eye watching her way. Just a little history.

NOW, if my husband of 50 years ever tried the terrible, smothering things that the poor women of the Muslim religion have to contend with....I definitely shoot him in the foot. No, I am not kidding, I own several guns which is our right in the USA., all registered!! He also knows that I wouldn't hesitate to take care of myself when I would feel threatened. These poor women have my condolences, except the ones that figure if they blow themselves up that Alla will take care of them. Listen, there is no Allla, I don't believe, that would allow his followers to kill themselves for the sake of destroying another nationality. No one knows where these lunatics live...(supposedly, we have terrists training camps in my state, and where else?) granted we have many Muslim followers in this country that love this soil as much as we do, getting away from the drama and uncertainty of their daily lives in their own country. Many American born people follow this religion also, not us, but some people we know do and don't flaunt their beliefs in front of us.

We can have respect for each other, but we are afraid of people we don't know, are they a fanatic and want America to fall in ruin, like our Twin Towers did (oh my God)!!

To HistoryStudent....my grandmom lost family in the concentration camps in Germany, she was finally able to get to America, yes I am part Jewish although we don't practice the Jewish religion....we are part American Indian too. No one has forgotten a thing.

Thanks for letting me tell part of my heritage....I read you every day, all of you...if I commented on all I feel to everyone, I don't think you have the time....Love us or leave us............gjg
